Building Business Applications with LightSwitch for Visual Studio 2012

Abstract
Visual Studio LightSwitch is the simplest way to create business applications for the desktop and cloud. In Visual Studio 2012 we've opened up the LightSwitch application architecture by embracing the OData protocol, making LightSwitch also the simplest way to create a Data Service. LightSwitch continues to simplify the development process by letting you concentrate on the business logic, while LightSwitch handles the common tasks for you. In this demo-heavy session, see end-to-end how to build and deploy a data-centric business application using LightSwitch and how to leverage Data Services created with LightSwitch to make data and business logic available through other applications. In this session you'll gain an understanding of the LightSwitch application architecture and learn advanced techniques for customizing a LightSwitch application.

Speaker
Jay Schmelzer is a Director of Program Management on the Visual Studio Team at Microsoft.
MSDN Flash Podcast 014 – Entity Framework and ADO.NET Data Services at TechEd Europe

This podcast was recorded at TechEd Europe in November 2009. I get a chance to sit down with Mike Flasko, Program Manager in the Data Services team. We had both presented on Entity Framework during the conference which is where we started the discussion
before we moved on to talk about Data Servies and some of the announcements around Data Services, RIA and WCF which would be happening the following week at PDC.

<itunes:summary> In this installment of DevNuggets, Developer Evangelist G. Andrew Duthie (aka DEvHammer) demonstrates how you can easily add fun and function to your ASP.NET-based website using jQueryUI.This DevNugget is a follow-up to Andrew's introduction to using jQueryUI in ASP.NET and in it you'll see how easy it is to dynamically generate the markup required to build a jQueryUI Accordion widget using an ASP.NET Repeater control bound to an ADO.NET Data Service. Databinding with a Repeater makes it quick and easy to generate clean markup that's tailor-made for integration with jQueryUI.You can keep track of what's happening with the DEvHammer on his blog, or on Twitter, and find out about upcoming developer and IT Pro events in your area on his site, Community Megaphone. </itunes:summary>

In this episode of 10-4, we discuss a new feature coming in the next release of ADO.NET Data Services: server-driven paging. This allows you to constrain the size of result sets that can be requested by clients, eliminating potentially problematic scenarios.
In addition, clients can also now request the total count of an entity set, without having to retrieve its data in entirety.

Astoria Design Walkthrough: Alpha preview of Project Codename "Astoria Offline" coming soon

Pablo and one of our hot shot developers Waseem Basheer sit down for a brief discussion about a new Project Astoria incubation project that we have spun up for adding sync and offline support to ADO.NET Data Services.

The coolest thing is that we will have the preview bits available by end of year – so folks can get in early and play with the new functionality plus give feedback on the features early on in our design process.

In our latest installment of the Astoria Design Walkthroughs there is no design, just plugs for the ADO.NET Data Services PDC talks.

Both Mike and Pablo are excellent speakers, so if you are at all interested in ADO.NET Data Services, try to catch their PDC talks. Also, pay close attention to what Pablo
doesn’t say about the 3rd talk. Apparently the content is very top secret, at least I couldn’t get much information.

ADO.NET Data Services (Astoria) in Visual Studio 2008 SP1

In this interview Saaid Kahn, a Program Manager on the Visual Studio Pro Tools team, shows us how to create an n-tier application against a database using ADO.NET Data Services (Astoria) and an Entity Data Model, both now available in Visual Studio 2008
Service Pack 1.

ADO.NET Data Services use WCF REST-ful services and provides all the plumbing so you can focus on the program logic by programming against a service proxy. ADO.NET Data Services allow you to easily create data services exposed on the web using URIs to point
to pieces of data and simple, well-known formats to represent that data.

Saaid shows us how to create a simple service and then consume it using a Windows client via the "Add Service Reference" dialog in Visual Studio. He also walks through the client proxy methods that work with the data service.

Enjoy,
<itunes:summary>In this interview Saaid Kahn, a Program Manager on the Visual Studio Pro Tools team, shows us how to create an n-tier application against a database using ADO.NET Data Services (Astoria) and an Entity Data Model, both now available in Visual Studio 2008

Enjoy,

Astoria Design Walkthrough: Friendly Feeds Part 1

For V1 of ADO.NET Data Services (aka Project Astoria) we introduced a process we called

Transparent Design. The point of this was to make sure we got the design of our features out to users early enough so we could get feedback that we could act on. Here is a couple of samples:

http://blogs.msdn.com/astoriateam/archive/2008/05/20/merge-vs-replace-semantics-for-update-operations.aspx

In general, this worked out quite well, however we found it difficult to completely capture the design discussion in notes. Hence, for Astoria vNext we are going to include short videos of folks from the team describing the design of the new features we
are considering in addition to the usual design notes.

The first of these videos features Mike Flasko, Project Astoria Program Manager, describing the

Friendly Feeds capabilities we are looking at for vNext. Enjoy!
