      <title>Rich Hickey - The Database as a Value</title>
      <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Rich&nbsp;Hickey</strong> is the creator of the&nbsp;<a href="http://clojure.org/" target="_blank"><strong>Clojure</strong></a>&nbsp;programming language. Most recently (over the past couple of years), Rich has been putting his iconoclastic ways to work on data programmability. The&nbsp;result is a new type of database, <a href="http://www.datomic.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Datomic</strong></a>.<em> Datomic is a database of flexible, time-based facts, supporting queries and joins, with elastic scalability, and ACID transactions. </em>It is implemented in Clojure.</p><p>Here is&nbsp;C9's recording of Rich's most recent talk on a&nbsp;new approach to&nbsp;database design and general purpose programmability. In this talk we will examine how Datomic renders the database into that most prized and easy-to-reason-about construct, a value, and makes it available to multiple processes in multiple languages, functional and not.</em><br><br><em>Along the way, we'll discuss the importance of immutability and time in representing information, the reification of process, and the mechanisms of durable persistent data structures.       <title>YOW! 2011: Steve Vinoski -  Riak Core, Erlang and Frisbee Freestyle</title>
      <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Steve Vinoski</strong> is an architect at <a href="http://www.basho.com" target="_blank">Basho Technologies</a> in Cambridge, MA, USA. He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM. Steve is regarded as an expert in the areas of middleware and distributed computing systems, topics for which he has authored or co-authored over 80 articles, papers, and a book. He currently writes The Functional Web column for IEEE Internet Computing (IC) magazine, and prior to that, from 2002-2008, he wrote the Toward Integration column for IC as well.<br><br>Steve's session at YOW! 2011 focused on <strong>Riak Core</strong>, the distributed systems foundation for the Riak distributed database and the Riak Search full-text indexing system. It's implemented in Erlang, Steve's favorite language. <br><br>Besides being an expert in the domain of distributed systems and Erlang, Steve&nbsp;has been ranked&nbsp;among the top 100 Frisbee Freestyle players in the world.  Clint Pearson created a <a href="http://flatdb.codeplex.com/">flat database project over at CodePlex</a>.&nbsp; Initially I wasn't sold on this but then after a few pokes at the source code, I realized it is actually fairly powerful.&nbsp; Clint implemented a table
 solution for FlatDB which makes it far more powerful than a typical single serializable class.</p>
<p>Using and saving are dirt simple too!</p>
