Microsoft Launches Free Web Dev Tool, WebMatrix

Microsoft just launched a free, lightweight development tool called WebMatrix which is designed to make Web development easy for professional developers. It installs a Web server (IIS Developer Express), a database (SQL Server Compact) and a Web framework (ASP.NET) in one 15 MB package (or 50 MB if you don’t already have .NET 4 installed), allowing you to code, test and deploy both ASP.NET and PHP applications side-by-side.

WebMatrix helps developers learn standards-based Web development, explains the text on its new website, using technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. And it even connects you to open source apps like DotNetNuke, Umbraco, WordPress, Joomla!, and more, all available from the built-in gallery. (You’ll probably remember seeing these apps in the Windows Web App Gallery, which was also launched over the past year).

The interface WebMatrix displays when you launch it the first time is a simple wizard-based welcome screen that lets you pick whether you want to create a site from the Web Gallery, a template (several are included) or a “site from folder.” This may be too simple for advanced developers, but that’s the point. WebMatrix is intended for “web agencies, small development teams within SMBs, hobbyists, and students,” writes Microsoft’s Laurence Moroney on The Officical Microsoft Web Platform Team Blog.
WebsiteSpark Launches: Free Software for Web Developers

The “Spark” series of programs are initiatives that deliver free Microsoft software and support to individuals and organizations. The program lineup currently includes
DreamSpark, which offers tons of free software tools for students, and
BizSpark, which gives startups the tools and support they need to get off the ground. Now comes a third entry, “WebsiteSpark.”

As you may imagine, this new program provides web developers and designers with copies of Microsoft web design and development software. The list includes Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, Expression Studio 3, Expression Web 3 as well as processor
licenses for Windows Web Server 2008 or R2 (when available), SQL Server 2008 and DotNetPanel, a third-party web site control panel.

To qualify, web development and design companies with up to 10 employees and owners can participate for three years with no up-front cost on their part. At the end of the term, only a $100 fee is due, but there are no other costs or obligations. So in other
words, you’re getting a ton of software for only $100.

That on its own would be great, but the program also provides professional support and training during the three year period. Of course the end goal here is to sell potential customers on the Microsoft platform, but as

TechCrunch recently noted: “Who cares” because “frankly, their developer tools have long been the best available.”

Those interested in learning more or enrolling can do so here:

Windows Animation - Advanced Topics

Smooth animations are fundamental to many graphical UI applications. Windows 7 introduces a native animation framework for managing the scheduling and execution of animations. The animation framework supplies a library of useful mathematical functions for
specifying behavior over time and lets developers provide their own behavior functions. The framework supports sophisticated resolution of conflicts when multiple animations attempt to manipulate the same value simultaneously. An application can specify that
one animation must be completed before another can begin and can force completion within a set time. The new framework also helps animations determine appropriate durations.

You are welcome to join the Paul(s), both Paul Kwiatkowski and Paul Gildea, as they dive deep (real deep) in to some of the advanced topics of the Windows Animation Manager.

This is the third video in a series of videos about the Windows Animation Manager. The first two videos are:

Want to Build a Silverlight App Using the NY Times API?

Are you a developer looking to build a Silverlight application using the New York Times API? Well, now you can. The New York Times Silverlight Kit has just become an Open Source project distributed under the MS-PL license. If you’re not familiar with what this kit does, it’s something that you can add into a Visual Studio or Expression Blend Silverlight 2 project to get easy access to the New York Times APIs for Articles, Best Sellers (books), the US Congress, Movie Reviews, Community Comments, Times Tags, and more. You can check out a demo of the kit here or see an application built using the kit here. <itunes:summary>Are you a developer looking to build a Silverlight application using the New York Times API? Well, now you can. The New York Times Silverlight Kit has just become an Open Source project distributed under the MS-PL license. If you’re not familiar with what this kit does, it’s something that you can add into a Visual Studio or Expression Blend Silverlight 2 project to get easy access to the New York Times APIs for Articles, Best Sellers (books), the US Congress, Movie Reviews, Community Comments, Times Tags, and more. You can check out a demo of the kit here or see an application built using the kit here. The app is called “Artist Explorer” and it lets you research musicians using the NY Times API as well as Billboard and Best Buy.</itunes:summary>

Today Microsoft added new capabilities including support for full trust to increase the level of flexibility for developers through support of native code, non-.NET language support via FastCGI, and geolocation which will allow developers to host data and code across two U.S.-based datacenters. The Azure team has also addressed the top customer bugs and has implemented update notifications for future releases. Customers were reminded, however, that Azure is still a CTP (Community Technology Preview) and should not yet be used on production systems.
