We’ll use this session to introduce the building blocks of the Windows Azure Platform and set the stage for the two questions most pertinent to you: “how do I take my existing applications to the cloud?” and “how do I design specifically for the cloud?”

Session 2: Migrating Your Applications to the Cloud by Brian Hitney

How difficult is it to migrate your applications to the cloud? What about designing your applications to be flexible inside and outside of cloud environments? These are common questions, and in this session, we’ll specifically focus on migration strategies and adapting your applications to be “cloud ready.”

We’ll examine how Azure VMs differ from a typical server – covering everything from CPU and memory, to profiling performance, load balancing considerations, and deployment strategies such as dealing with breaking changes in schemas and contracts. We’ll also cover SQL Azure migration strategies and how the forthcoming VM and Admin Roles can aid in migrating to the cloud.

Session 3: Creating (and Adapting) Applications for the Cloud by Jim O’Neil

Windows Azure enables you to leverage a great deal of your Visual Studio and .NET expertise on an ‘infinitely scalable’ platform, but it’s important to realize the cloud is a different environment from traditional on-premises or hosted applications. Windows Azure provides new capabilities and features – like Azure storage and the AppFabric – that differentiate an application translated to Azure from one built for Azure. We’ll look at many of these platform features and examine tradeoffs in complexity, performance, and costs.

Note: There was an instructor-led hands-on lab at the Firestarter events. However, we did not record this portion. The lab is based on the Azure @Home application, and features a fun exercise using distributed computing to help with medical research. You can view previous screencasts about the lab, and follow along at home by visiting: http://distributed.cloudapp.net.

You can find all of the Firestarter session slides at the resource page on the US Cloud Connection site. US Cloud Connection is our site for staying connected with the Microsoft Evangelists in the US focused on Windows Azure.

about the advantages or disadvantages of each search engine but on how to access each of their APIs, and using WCF too. Then, with a dependency injection technique, I'll show you how to put them all together into a common API that will allow your application
to use which ever search engine you want without changing code. This session will expose you to WCF access to outside APIs, both SOAP and REST, and intro into basic dependency injection, and time-permitting I'll wrap this up into some drag-and-drop controls

In this presentation, we'll get to see some of this stuff in action while we take a look
at what's new and cool in the next .NET Framework release. After a high-level, whirlwind tour of all the new changes across the .NET spectrum, we'll narrow our focus on the core fundamentals of the framework itself by taking an existing .NET 3.5 application
and sprucing it up with the likes of language enhancements, the Managed Extensibility Framework, and even throw in a bit of the Dynamic Language Runtime for good measure!

Speaker
Jess Chadwick is an independent software consultant specializing in web technologies. <itunes:summary>Recorded Live at Philly.NET CodeCamp April 2010http://codecamp.phillydotnet.org/2010-1Want more details on why you should attend a Microsoft Community Code Camp?SummaryDespite the fact that the Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0 have not yet been released, the framework is stable enough to take a look at, so that's what we'll do! In this presentation, we'll get to see some of this stuff in action while we take a look
at what's new and cool in the next .NET Framework release. After a high-level, whirlwind tour of all the new changes across the .NET spectrum, we'll narrow our focus on the core fundamentals of the framework itself by taking an existing .NET 3.5 application
and sprucing it up with the likes of language enhancements, the Managed Extensibility Framework, and even throw in a bit of the Dynamic Language Runtime for good measure!SpeakerJess Chadwick is an independent software consultant specializing in web technologies. He has over a decade of development experience ranging from embedded devices in start-ups to enterprise-scale web farms at Fortune 500s. He is an ASPInsider, Microsoft
MVP in ASP.NET, technical editor of the recently-released Silverlight 3 Programmers Reference (WROX) and is actively involved with the community, leading the NJDOTNET Central New Jersey .NET user group. You can visit his blog at
