You all caught the official launch of Visual Studio 2012 and .Net Framework 4.5 this past week? If not you can catch the keynotes and a number of great sessions on-demand here.

So I hear some of you asking, "What's new in .Net Framework 4.5?" Wouldn't it be kind of cool if there were an app for our Modern App Monday that provided that information? One that comes with source of course! And wasn't just a simple app, but hooked into a web backend using the Web API, Jason.Net and even Code First Entity Framework?

What's New in the .NET Framework 4.5

The ".NET Feature Catalog" uses .NET 4.5 to build an end-to-end sample from a web backend to a Windows Store app. It allows the user to peruse through some of the features introduced over several versions. This was demoed in TechEd 2012 North America and Europe.
The .NET Framework 4.5 introduces a number of features to help solve the programming problems of today. This sample demonstrates end-to-end how to build a Windows 8 app that connects to a web backend using industry standard REST APIs. If you were at TechEd 2012 in North America or Europe, we showed you how to build this sample from scratch. The app itself is a catalog of some features found in the .NET Framework, so you can learn more about .NET simply by exploring the app.
Description
The sample is best experienced by watching the talk for What's New in .NET 4.5 from TechEd 2012. Click on either of the following to see the presentation given by Brandon Bray or Layla Driscoll respectively.

The main features we cover in the sample are:
WebAPI for building REST based web services
Entity Framework using Code First and migrations
Windows Store app using the .NET for Windows Store Apps profile
Async and await to build a fast and interactive user experience
HttpClient for an easy way to connect to a web service
NuGet for acquiring the latest libraries, specifically Json.NET

Here's a brief road map of the source;

This sample was created with the default project templates for Windows Store Grid App and an ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Application. The files that were edited during the TechEd demo were:
DotnetCatalog/DataModel/FeatureDataSource.cs - used async, HttpClient, and Json deserializing
WebBackend/Controllers/FeaturesController.cs - contains the REST APIs for the feature data
WebBackend/Controllers/FeaturesSummaryController.cs - contains the REST APIs for the feature summary data
WebBackend/Models/Feature.cs - contains the data model for the feature entity
WebBackend/Models/FeatureContext.cs - used entity framework
WebBackend/Models/FeatureSummary.cs - contains the data model for the feature summary entity
WebBackend/WebAssets - the media and text data transferred from the web backend to the Windows app

Rowan Miller Demonstrates Entity Framework 5 Using ASP.NET MVC 4

In this episode, Rowan Miller shows you how to get started using his team's latest release, Entity Framework 5. Using a new ASP.NET MVC 4 project, he creates a database using code, then scaffolds an ASP.NET MVC 4 web site to enter and view data from the database. Using the new Migrations features of EF, he then adds some setup and teardown logic and changes the schema. Near the end, the new spatial data features of EF5 are used to demonstrate a geographical search feature, wherein he sorts a series of records in the database according to their proximity to his office. These new spatial features alone make this an exciting episode. Come check out EF5 and see how to use it in your ASP.NET MVC 4 applications today.

Entity Framework - Code First CTP5 with Wouter Hendrickx

This talk presents the new developments in Entity Framework. More specifically, the EF 4.1 features involving “Code First” are discussed.
The session first gives an overview of the state-of-the-art Entity Framework approach using the EDMX model. It pinpoints some of the weak points of this approach and provides some context.
Then, the “Code First” approach is introduced using an example data model, both the fluent interface and attribute way of configuring the code first context are presented, and some example usage of the code first POCO’s is given.
The presentation concludes with a more exotic setup involving multiple EDMX files with navigation properties linking them together.

Recommended resources for Entity Framework

A great resource for getting a hang of the Entity framework 4.1 is the ADO.NET team blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/adonet/). Specifically, the 12 post series titled “Using DbContext in EF 4.1” gives a nice overview of the features in CTP5.

Furthermore, Scott Guthrie’s blog contains a simple ASP.NET MVC demo, using the Code First approach for the data layer (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/07/16/code-first-development-with-entity-framework-4.aspx).

The MSDN Data Development Center (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data) contains loads of information on EF 4.1 in its “Entity framework” section.

Wouter Hendrickx is a .NET Software Architect with the Belgian .NET consultancy firm Nais Software. He holds a PhD in computer science and a master’s degree in mathematics.

He has strong interest in the newest technology developments on the .NET scene, and has been following the Entity Framework innovations quite closely. He is currently coordinating team of developers in India with a steering group in Spain building a large Software Factory, involving an n-tier setup providing front-end infrastructure for both ASP.NET, Silverlight and WPF, and backed by an Entity Framework Data Layer.

Most applications connect to a database at some point and ORM tools, like Entity Framework, can make that process a lot simpler. Whether you have worked with the Entity Framework before, sometimes it takes real world examples to make it all click. In this session we will look at a few real world examples using Entity Framework with technologies like ASP.Net MVC, Silverlight and WCF. We will look at some of the common issues when building applications with any ORM solution and how the new features in Entity Framework 4 help reduce development time and frustration. Urbanization and building construction along with overhaul and modernization of the city’s zoning code have converged with the obsolescence of the existing building, planning and zoning business processes forcing the largest IT project for the city in two decades.

The new system was built from the ground up as a web-based solution which will significantly reduce the need for citizens to transact in person, and instead they can now do most of the required building related transactions online via a browser. The system was built using a modern architecture involving ASP.NET, MVC, Entity Framework, LINQ, and SQL Server 2008 to mention a few. Through this project the City of Miami was also able to implement a full end to end Application Lifecycle Management process by adopting Team Foundation Server technology.

The city can now afford envisioning new solutions to address other critical business leveraging this new architecture.

This session will demonstrate practical LINQ tips you can use to improve the performance of an application. We’ll see the advantages of deferred execution, re-write correlated sub queries, and offer advice on choosing between the two flavors of LINQ syntax. In addition, we’ll spend time looking at optimizations everyone should be doing when working with the Entity Framework.
