Visual Studio Toolbox: Building Extensions with CodeRush

They demonstrate how you can use CodeRush to build a plug-in that will enforce naming conventions for classes, methods, and other members in a Visual Studio solution. LightSwitch is the fastest way to build database applications for the desktop and the cloud. In this episode, Robert shows you how to make developing with LightSwitch even faster with the LightSwitch Starter Kits. These Starter Kits cover common business needs like expense reporting and issue tracking. All you need to do is download and install one of the kits and then create a new LightSwitch project based on it. LightSwitch creates data tables and screens and writes some basic code for you. You can press F5 and run or customize the application to meet your needs. And because you built it with LightSwitch, the application is well architected and scalable.

Mei Liang is our guest this week. She is here to talk about the Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework, a code sample library provided by the Microsoft Community team. The Microsoft Community team monitors the MSDN forums, as well as other developer hangouts, and then creates code samples that address the issues developers run into. In this video, Mei shows us how to search for samples using the All-In-One Code Framework Sample Browser, which runs as a Visual Studio extension. She then shows us that the Sample Browser runs stand-alone! Good news for our viewers who are using Visual Studio Express.

Visual Studio Toolbox: Reporting Performance Issues with PerfWatson

Visual Studio Toolbox: Creating and Using Code Snippets

In this episode, we explore code snippets, an underappreciated feature of Visual Studio.

Code snippets are existing pieces of code. All you have to do is type the snippets shortcut and Visual Studio writes the code for you. Watch as we first use a couple of snippets that ship with Visual Studio. Then, see how to use the Snippet Designer extension and create your own snippets. With this extension, you can highlight code, right-click, and Export as Snippet. Very cool!!

Visual Studio Toolbox: Creating Item Templates

In this episode of Visual Studio Toolbox, we talk about reuse, something we want as much of as we can get. We look at how you can create your own item template. We take an XAML splash screen and turn it into an item template that shows up when in the Add New Item dialog box. Then, we take a look at the VSIX Explorer and Export Template Wizard extensions and see how they make it easy for us to create a .vsix file—with that file, other developers can easily install (or uninstall) the splash screen item template.

Visual Studio Toolbox: Productivity Power Tools Part 2

Previously on Visual Studio Toolbox, we started looking at the Productivity Power Tools. In this episode, we explore additional features of this excellent extension. We will see enhancements to the Document Tab Well that make it easier to work with code files, and we'll take a look at both the Quick Find and Quick Access features. Quick Find makes searching in code a better experience and Quick Access means you don't have to remember where things are in the menu. Enhancements to the scroll bar and a new Add Reference dialog box are also covered.

Bing Translation Plugin for Windows Live Writer

One of the cool things about the desktop blogging application Windows Live Writer is its extensibility through the use of plugins. We’ve covered many of these before, including the Zemnta plugin, the Tweetmeme plugin, and 10 other of our favorites. Now there’s a new one to add to the list - I just came across the Bing Translation plugin. Like it sounds, this tool lets you copy and paste text from the web (or wherever) into a provided text box for automatic translation using the Microsoft Bing Translator. The plugin was created by blogger Scott of scottisafooldev.spaces.live.com using BingSharp, a .NET wrapper the Bing APIs created by MVP Joseph Guadagno.

The plugin is available for download now from the Windows Live Gallery, which by the way, is an excellent place to seek out new extensions for Live Writer.

The VS2010 Extension Manager

One of the big initiatives for Visual Studio 2010 was to incorporate the community directly into the IDE itself and the extension manager was created to achieve just that. This newcomer to VS allows the user to consume extensions posted to the Visual Studio Gallery right from within VS itself. It provides the ability to search and browse through the gallery's repository as well as manage the extensions you already have installed on your machine. We think it represents a big step forward in our hope to take the ecosystem to new heights. Enjoy!

Cooliris browser extensions save precious clicks

It should be no surprise to those of you playing along at home that there's far too much information on the net, and thus anything that helps us move more quickly is a welcome addition to our digital lives.

Cooliris has developed a set of browser extensions that, "give you the power to quickly preview the underlying content of links without clicking." Naturally we were happy to install their code and we've been thoroughly impressed with the experience thus far (peeking beyond a hyperlink is quite the timesaver). Perhaps this team has been mentored by the old Palm tap-counter?
