Anandan, who leads Microsoft Research in India, stopped by to show us a project they worked on called the India Digital Heritage Project. This was a very cool attempt to recreate the experience of visiting historic sites around India through the combined use of Photosynth, HD View, video, and ambient sound. While much of the presentation is 'on rails' like a theme park tour, just like with World Wide Telescope you can stop the tour at any time and wander off clicking and zooming and looking at the sites, and then click to jump right back into the tour.
Advanced Image Editing in Windows Live Photo Gallery

The Microsoft Image Composite Editor (ICE) is a tool created by Microsoft Research which can be used to create panoramic images. It’s essentially the same technology that Windows Live Photo Gallery uses “under the hood” when you create panoramic photos in the software (just like Alexa does in the latest commercial – and lest you think these kids are far more tech savvy than you – I can assure you that the process is dead simple).

But unlike the panoramic technology that runs in WLPG, the ICE software provides a few extra features, too. The most important one is the orientation tool. With this, you can change the orientation of a photo to give the impression that a tilt/shift lens was used. For example:

You could also use a perspective projection instead of a cylindrical one with the tool. Example:

Or you could set the mid-point of a 360-degree panorama:

ICE also adds a variety of export options including Deep Zoom and HD View. Use ICE to export to either of these two options and it will generate a web page that handles viewing these images in a much more efficient manner (they tend to be very large images by default). For Deep Zoom photos, the web page will use Silverlight to allow for interactivity with the image. HD View is like Deep Zoom but also adds some extra affects – it can rewarp the panorama on the fly using a fish-eye lens, auto-exposure adjust for looking into those deep shadows of the panorama, and it will support wide-color-gamut monitors. HD View is still more experimental technology and will require a special plugin. You can get it here.

Add to Photo Gallery!

Now you can take this advanced ICE photo manipulation technology and integrate it into Windows Live Photo Gallery. Just download it and install it. You’ll then see a new menu item in the WLPG “Extras” menu:

To use ICE, simply select a group of images and then launch it using the new menu item.

(via Windows Live Photo & Video Blog)

Silverlight News: Compatibility Updates, New Hard Rock Memorabilia, And More

Last week we saw the release of Silverlight 2, the latest and greatest version of the browser plugin designed for rich media experiences on the web. Since that time, a number of related technologies have also been updated to work with Silverlight 2. These include the following:

Deep Zoom Composer/PhotoZoom Site:

Along with the new version of Silverlight, a new version of the Deep Zoom Composer was also released. The Deep Zoom Composer is a tool which lets you design your own deep zoom creations which can then be uploaded to the Microsoft Live Labs PhotoZoom website, which has been updated as well. The new Deep Zoom Composer doesn’t feature anything new besides Silverlight 2 support except for one minor upgrade which allows you to launch the tool by double-clicking on the DZPRJ file itself.

ICE (Image Composite Editor):

Microsoft Image Composite Editor is an advanced panoramic image stitcher created by Microsoft Research. If you already checked out this site before back when it launched, you’ll want to revisit. The new site has had some big performance improvements and also offers nearly double the number of images as before. By the way, did you know that site has an Easter Egg? (I love these!) Here’s a tip – zoom in on Paul McCartney’s letter, the stamp, the image of Paramount, then the Marquee. Keep going…you’ll soon see some Beatles bobble-head dolls appear! Nifty.

<itunes:summary> Last week we saw the release of Silverlight 2, the latest and greatest version of the browser plugin designed for rich media experiences on the web. Since that time, a number of related technologies have also been updated to work with Silverlight 2. These include the following: Deep Zoom Composer/PhotoZoom Site: Along with the new version of Silverlight, a new version of the Deep Zoom Composer was also released. ICE (Image Composite Editor): Microsoft Image Composite Editor is an advanced panoramic image stitcher created by Microsoft Research. This tool takes a series of overlapping photographs and creates a high-res panorama. The ICE update includes more than just Silverlight 2 support. It also offers the following new features and bug fixes: Fixed a bug that could cause the program to crash the second time it was run if there were non-English characters in the file paths of source our exported panoramas. (The "Options.xml" bug.) Fixed a bug that allows more TIFF files to be properly opened Changed autocrop to recognize 360 panos and provide a better crop rectangle in those cases Removed Automatic from the Projection menu Proper output of Silverlight 2 RTM Deep Zoom Fixed a bug that could cause one input image to be dropped from a panorama seemingly at random Added integration with the next version of Windows Live Photo Gallery (Read more about ICE here).
HD View Internet Plugin

HD View is a technology developed by Microsoft Research specifically for the purpose of viewing and interacting with large scale images on the web. As the HD Team describes it, it’s a “camera for the web.” But really what it does is allow you to interact with large, panoramic images that don’t fit on your screen. You can move around the images and zoom in and out, all while still maintaining a high-definition view of what you’re seeing. The technology is still very much of a concept because sites have to be HD View-enabled in order for this to work, but there are still several sites that have done so if you want to check it out. Here’s the plugin for IE. Zooming in on photos reminds me a lot of the capabilities of Silverlight with its deep zoom, so it will be interesting to see how each are used.

TechFest '07: HD Viewer!

I couldn't resist stopping at the HD view booth at TechFest '07 because of the sheer magnitude of the camera on display. But, to my surprise and excitement - that huge camera is NOT necessary to pull off the amazing technology HD View is giving us. I chatted up Michael Cohen and he gave a quick demo where you can zoom out to almost satellite distance and then zoom right into detailed ground level on these pictures. You have to see it to believe it...so go see it.
