What Happens When You Send Your Printer Cartridge For Recycling?

When you buy a new ink cartridge for your printer, have you ever noticed the little envelope in the pack for recycling your old cartridge? Good! Now, do you use them? Even better! If you have a HP printer, that cartridge has joined over 320 million others which have been returned and recycled in the company’s Planet Partners programme since 1991.

But what actually happens in the recycling process? You may assume they’d end up back at a printer cartridge factory, cleaned up, refilled and sent out once again as new – good for the planet, and great for manufacturing costs! The truth is a little different, as this video from HP shows.

Each printer cartridge recycled is shredded, melted down, blended to improve the quality of the resin, reprocessed, heated up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit and extruded into plastic strands. Those strands are then cooled, cut into pellets and sent off to be melted down again and manufactured into new printer cartridges.

HP have now manufactured more than 1 billion printer cartridges with recycled materials. That’s a lot of landfill saved. So, next time you spot one of those little envelopes, make sure you join in the efforts to keep your ink green.

That’s a lot of landfill saved. So, next time you spot one of those little envelopes, make sure you join in the efforts to keep your ink green. </itunes:summary>

HP Gloe, a Geo-tagging Experiment from HP Labs

I had heard the name before, but I just now had the opportunity to check out HP Gloe, a geo-tagging experiment from HP Labs. The app maps web content to specific locations in order to provide a platform for location-based discovery of information. Although the app is meant for mobile users, the HP site features an online version of the application which you can try now.

The online app serves as a proof-of-concept which demonstrates how this type of system could work. To use Gloe, you enter in your current location and it returns pre-populated content from Wikipedia plus review and photo sharing sites. It also features tag clouds of content by category, trending sites, recommendations, local experts and Facebook integration.

Developers can also use the HP Gloe API to build location-aware services of their own. HP offers a few suggestions, including:

Personal Bookmarking

Discovering Local News

Virtual Tours

Geographic Polls

Searching Local Businesses

Sharing Geo-tagged Pages with Friends

Although there are no commercial plans for the app at this time, it’s an interesting experiment worth checking out.
I stopped by HP's Smart Home to see the refreshed TouchSmart TX2 Tablet/Laptop. The HP TouchSmart TX2 laptop has been my main (work) PC now for several months and it's easily the most versatile laptop I've ever had. It's a laptop, it's a Tablet PC, it's
got multitouch, Dual Core, removable Lightscribe DVD burner, removable remote control, thumbprint reader, even dual headphone jacks. Best of all, the starting price of $700 (the previous TX2 has been on sale for less) it's more what you would expect to pay
for a tricked-out netbook. But with Dual Core and 8GB of DDR3 RAM possible, it will run circles around a netbook. For those who think they won't use multitouch, this is a great way to dip your toes in the water, but be prepared to intuitively smudge the screen
of every other laptop you use thereafter. You can also see my video on the

When I heard Microsoft's Brion Taylor would be visiting the HP Smart Home to see the new TouchSmart hardware, I grabbed a camera and tagged along. This hardware refresh has some significant improvements including better multitouch detection, ambient light,
Blu-Ray, TV Tuners and HP software. For consumers, there is the 20" TouchSmart 300 at $899, and the 23" TouchSmart 600 ($1049) (see that video

HP Pavilion's DV2 and DV3

At CES, HP revealed two new netbook PCs the 12.1-inch DV2 and the 13.3-inch DV3. The first thing you’ll notice about these devices are their slick, glossy finishes, but it wasn’t just their looks that made the devices a CNet Editors’ pick at CES (specifically, the DV2).

The DV2 is supposed to be a step up from netbooks – the step provided by the all-new AMD Athlon Neo platform – powerful enough to run Windows Vista. <itunes:summary> At CES, HP revealed two new netbook PCs the 12.1-inch DV2 and the 13.3-inch DV3. The CPU is the MV-40, which runs at 1.6 GHz and it comes with ATI Mobility Radeon HD3410 graphics. The DV2 supports up to 4GB of memory and offers a 500GB hard drive. It will retail for $699.
HP’s New TouchSmart PCs

On the Windows Experience blog, Brandon has the scoop on the next generation of HP TouchSmart PCs: the IQ804 and IQ816. These new PCs are bigger than the previous models (25.5” vs. 22”) and, like the older ones, they let you shine ambient lighting on your keyboard. However, now, you can change the color of that light. As someone who wanted to purchase the HP MediaSmart WHS just for the Easter egg where you can customize the lighting scheme, I have to admit this makes the new TouchSmart PCs look pretty sexy to me. But those pretty lights aren’t all the new PCs have to offer: they also come with a pocket media drive for portable media, built-in TV tuners, giant hard drives (804 = 500GB, 816=750GB), a wall-mounting kit, a Blu-ray drive, screens with an image resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, and, of course, a natural user interface that works via touch.

With this new extender, you can wirelessly stream multimedia like TV, music, videos, and photos all around your house either over your wired network or over Wi-Fi. If you’re interested in learning more about this new extender, the Windows Vista Team blog recently pointed me to some webinars that are being put on by both Microsoft and HP to introduce and demonstrate the capabilities of this new extenders. HP’s Director of Marketing for their Connected Entertainment Group, Brian Burch, will be hosting, but it’s the guests that will be making these webinars worth the watch. Like Patrick Norton, for example. I’m a huge fan of Tekzilla myself, so I can’t wait to see what Patrick has to say about the MediaSmart Connect. Other guests include Ed Bott (ZDNet), Ian Dixon (The Digital Lifestyle), and Mike Garcen (Missing Remote).

Here’s the schedule for the webinars:

Tuesday, June 24th - 10:00 am PST with Ed Bott, http://www.zdnet.com/

Thursday, June 26th - 1:00 pm PST with Ian Dixon, http://www.thedigitallifestyle.com/

Tuesday, July 8th - 10:00 am PST with Patrick Norton, http://www.tekzilla.com/

Thursday, July 10th - 1:00 pm PST with Mike Garcen, http://www.missingremote.com/

BlackBird HP Gaming System....sexy and sweet

The first true collaboration between HP and Voodoo PC has arrived: the HP Blackbird gaming system. This system—named after the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane—gives HP the weapon it needed in the fight against rivals such as Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Overdrive PC, and Dell (with its XPS line). <itunes:summary>The first true collaboration between HP and Voodoo PC has arrived: the HP Blackbird gaming system. This system—named after the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance plane—gives HP the weapon it needed in the fight against rivals such as Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Overdrive PC, and Dell (with its XPS line). Little touches and consolidated improvements from both HP and Voodoo make the Blackbird the most compelling gaming system I've seen. This is a system I would show off if I had one.
A Paperless Hospital Information System for less than $1 Million? What we can learn from Spain

Earlier this week I was in Barcelona, Spain, presenting at a Microsoft customer event called the Health Industry Leaders Innovation Forum. Healthcare executives from across the EMEA region came together to share information on how they are using information technology in healthcare and to exchange ideas on how to drive even greater innovation in the industry. We listened to presentations on progress being made in the provision of e-health services at the National Health Service in the UK including some exciting portal work in Wales. Members from our UK team discussed progress to date on the NHS Common-User-Interface initiative. A physician leader from Spain talked about healthcare industry trends and opportunities for venture-funded projects in his country, and IT executives from Egypt shared ideas on clinical transformation opportunities there. A complete review of the Forum proceedings is beyond the scope of my Blog, but I did want to share information on one of the presentations that particularly caught my attention. It caught my attention because it illustrates so well something I've been writing about on this Blog and elsewhere; how commodity software is being used to build very robust healthcare industry solutions quickly and inexpensively.

The customer in this case is a new hospital in the Valencia region of Spain. Torrevieja Salud is a 250 bed, privately managed, public facility that recently began serving patients. It has 11 operating theaters, 22 surgical beds and a full service ER with a 50 bed observation unit. From the very beginning, project designers planned for a facility that would be completely paperless when it opened its doors. The commodity building blocks they used included SQL Server 2005, Exchange, Terminal Server, Windows Server, MS Dynamics NAV, BizTalk 2006-HL7 Adapter, SharePoint, and the .Net Framework. Over a 2-year period, a development team of just 22 people built a fully functional healthcare information solution they call Florence. It handles all clinical and administrative functions for the entire facility. It even provides a rich balanced scorecard view of key performance indicators. Partners included Microsoft, HP, Drager Medical, Palex, B Braun, and Servicom 2000. I asked how much money they thought they had spent developing their HIS? The answer was approximately €600,000 (around $800,000). Compare that to the tens, or hundreds of millions of dollars being spent for equivalent functionality in an American hospital of equal size and you're left scratching your head. In fact, even in those American hospitals spending that kind of money I've rarely seen a true "paperless" environment.

To be honest, I didn't have an opportunity to visit Torrevieja Salud and see it with my own eyes. But even if their HIS built on commodity software did half of what is being claimed or cost 10 times as much, it would still be a bargain. I'm sure the folks at Torrevieja would be delighted to show off their new facility to anyone who might be interested. American Hospitals take note. I think there is a lesson here!

Bill Crounse, MD Healthcare Industry Director Microsoft
