Bytes by MSDN: Jonathan Sasse and Clark Sell on how Slacker.com integrated IE9 features

Slacker.com is a personalized internet radio service. Jonathan Sasse, Senior Vice President at Slacker, chats with Clark Sell, Microsoft Senior Developer Evangelist, about the ease of integrating new Internet Explorer 9 features to the site. By incorporating dynamic jump lists and pinned sites features, Slacker was able to maintain the site branding, while improving the user experience. If you're a music lover and developer, this is a great interview to catch.

About Jonathan

Slacker Senior Vice President of Marketing - Jonathan has helped define the digital music industry as an executive in the space for nearly a decade. He was with Rio when it launched the first portable digital music players, CEO of iRiver America which delivered the first subscription-capable digital music and video players and SVP of marketing at Slacker, creating the first portable personal radio experience. At Slacker, Jonathan manages product and brand definition as well as advertising, including the Slacker personal radio experience on the web, on mobile handsets, in the home and wherever Slacker Radio is available.

About Clark

Clark Sell is a Senior Developer Evangelist at Microsoft. Name a role in the software industry, and Clark has probably played it. He started as a Y2K tester and has since worked as a developer, lead, "build monkey," solutions architect and product manager. His professional sweet spot however, lies in designing and building software solutions that make life easier – there's no chance for boredom and constant opportunities for growth. Clark is MCSD certified and received top Microsoft honors with the Circle of Excellence Award. He's a graduate of Western Illinois University and before joining Microsoft in 2005, he served as a solutions architect at Allstate Insurance Company. As a senior developer evangelist and Visual Studio team system ranger, Clark brings a good dose of humor and a zest for life to the podium. You can hear Clark's technical musings on "The Smackdown" at DeveloperSmackdown.com and The Thirsty Developer podcast – or find him getting grease under his nails in the garage. Clark's a muscle car fanatic who's currently finishing a body-off restoration of his 1970 Chevrolet Camaro while driving his 1968 Camaro SS. You can also take a look at what Clark's been up to on his blog.

Jonathan Sasse and Clark Sell recommend you check out

Slacker.com

Download Internet Explorer 9

Check out the DevUnplugged Contest!

Learn more about the new IE9 features:

Taskbar Notifications

Dynamic Jumplists

Pinned Sites

Hardware Acceleration

Clark Sell's Blog

Bytes by MSDN: Chris Maliwat and Clark Sell discuss how IE9 Improves Customer User Experiences

Clark is joined by Chris Maliwat, Vice President of Product Management for Gilt Groupe, in this discussion on how Internet Explorer 9 improved their site performance. Gilt.com is an invitation-only website that provides luxury goods to members at insider prices with spectacular noon time sales. Using IE9 features such as notifications on a task bar, site pinning and dynamic jump lists to enhance the sites' functionality for users, Chris is very pleased with the results. Thanks to IE9, customers can get to products easier, shop more efficiently and grab deals faster. How long did it take Gilt to implement the IE9 features? About a week. Listen in and learn how you, too, can make improvements to your site with IE9 to improve user experience and sales.

About Chris Maliwat

Chris currently serves as Vice President of Product Management for Gilt Groupe, the innovative online shopping destination. Gilt, the first shopping site of its kind, offers special access to the most inspiring merchandise and experiences every day, specializing in getting its members insider prices.Prior to joining Gilt, Chris was Director of Product Management for Personalization at Netflix. Before that he was the Vice President of Product Management of Vuze, and prior to that the Senior Global Product Manager for eBay. Chris holds a BS in Symbolic Systems ' Human-Computer Interaction from Stanford University and has completed coursework at The Wharton School of Business.

About Clark Sell

Clark Sell ' Senior Developer Evangelist, Microsoft Corp.

Chris Maliwat and Clark Sell recommend you check out

Gilt

eBay

eBay Daily Deals

Download Internet Explorer 9

Check out the DevUnplugged Contest!

Learn more about the new IE9 features:

Taskbar Notifications

Dynamic Jumplists

Pinned Sites

Hardware Acceleration

MSDN Virtual Lab: Lap Around Internet Explorer 9

MSDN Virtual Lab: HTML 5 Video

Clark Sell's Blog

Bytes by MSDN: Ziad Ismail and Clark Sell discuss IE9

Please join us as Ziad Ismail, Director of Product Management for Internet Explorer, and Clark Sell, Microsoft Developer Evangelist, unleash the beauty of the web. They discuss IE9's new notification feature and "pinning" and give context to what "putting sites at the center" means for developers. That's not all! Ziad also announces "Dev Unplugged", the IE9 developer contest with over $40,000 in prizes. This is one interview you won't want to miss!

About Ziad Ismail

Ziad Ismail is currently the Director of Product Management for Internet Explorer. He has held leadership positions in several high-tech companies from small to large companies. Prior to joining the IE team, Ziad was the Director for Windows Phone Planning at Microsoft where he worked on the reinvention of Windows Phone. Prior to Microsoft, Ziad was the founder and CEO of several start-ups including CitiKey, a pioneering mobile location based company, and Inspire Infrastructure, a search infrastructure company that was acquired by Local.com. He served in the Swedish military spending two cold winters above the Arctic circle. He has won several awards including the City of Stockholm Innovation Award, Dell MBA Case Competition, and the Cap Gemini Innovation Award. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

About Clark Sell

Clark Sell | Senior Developer Evangelist, Microsoft Corp. Name a role in the software industry, and Clark has probably played it. He started as a Y2K tester and has since worked as a developer, lead, “build monkey,” solutions architect and product manager. His professional sweet spot however, lies in designing and building software solutions that make life easier – there’s no chance for boredom and constant opportunities for growth. Clark is MCSD certified and received top Microsoft honors with the Circle of Excellence Award. He’s a graduate of Western Illinois University and before joining Microsoft in 2005, he served as a solutions architect at Allstate Insurance Company. As a senior developer evangelist and Visual Studio team system ranger, Clark brings a good dose of humor and a zest for life to the podium. You can hear Clark’s technical musings on “The Smackdown” at DeveloperSmackdown.com and The Thirsty Developer podcast – or find him getting grease under his nails in the garage. Clark’s a muscle car fanatic who’s currently finishing a body-off restoration of his 1970 Chevrolet Camaro while driving his 1968 Camaro SS. You can also take a look at what Clark's been up to on his blog.

Ziad Ismail and Clark Sell recommend you check out

Download Internet Explorer 9

Check out the DevUnplugged Contest!

Learn more about the new IE9 features

Taskbar Notifications

Dynamic Jumplists

Pinned Sites

Hardware Acceleration

Clark Sell’s Blog

IE9 on 9 - Some Interesting Links to Related Demos and Conversations

IE9 shipped on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 9PM PST (UTC-8). Our fearless dev leader Duncan mentioned to me over lunch today that he thought it would be a really good idea to provide a single post on 9 with links to good C9 content related to IE9 (we tend to go out early on 9 and some of our best IE9 content was released well before RTM or RTW...). I agree. Good thinking, Duncan. Good thinking.

So, here goes. The following links provide a well-rounded view of IE9, from the moment we let the world know that we were cooking up a new modern browser (PDC09) to when we announced the RTM/RTW of IE9 and thanked the tens of thousands of you who provided the actionable feedback necessary for the IE team to deliver the very best:

http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/Charles/IE9-RTW-Due-Date-A-Big-Thank-You-MIX11-and-a-Unicorn-Named-Frank

Short IE9 Feature Demos/Talks from IE team PMs (for those with short attention spans):

http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/gioker84/IE9-and-Privacy-Introducing-Tracking-Protection
http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/Internet-Explorer-9-and-Real-World-performance
http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/gduthie/Intro-to-Pinned-Sites-in-IE-9-Beta
http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/LarryLarsen/IE9-File-Download-with-Integrated-Safety

JavaScript-focused conversations with an emphasis on Chakra (the IE9 JavaScript VM) and EcmaScript5. If you have downloaded IE9 and surfed around the web, then you can see the Chakra team has made tremendous progress in IE9 -> IE's new JS VM is now on par with the rest of the industry's leading JS VMs and in some cases even faster! Well done, Chakra team! <itunes:summary> IE9 shipped on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 9PM PST (UTC-8). The following links provide a well-rounded view of IE9, from the moment we let the world know that we were cooking up a new modern browser (PDC09) to when we announced the RTM/RTW of IE9 and thanked the tens of thousands of you who provided the actionable feedback necessary for the IE team to deliver the very best:http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/Charles/IE9-RTW-Due-Date-A-Big-Thank-You-MIX11-and-a-Unicorn-Named-Frank Short IE9 Feature Demos/Talks from IE team PMs (for those with short attention spans): http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/gioker84/IE9-and-Privacy-Introducing-Tracking-Protectionhttp://channel9.msdn.com/posts/Internet-Explorer-9-and-Real-World-performancehttp://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/gduthie/Intro-to-Pinned-Sites-in-IE-9-Betahttp://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/LarryLarsen/IE9-File-Download-with-Integrated-Safety JavaScript-focused conversations with an emphasis on Chakra (the IE9 JavaScript VM) and EcmaScript5.
