Brian explains how they used WCF using REST on Windows Azure. They do a demo of each phone using Azure to process messages across phone platforms using notifications. About Glassboard

Glassboard is an app for sharing privately with groups (or 'boards' as we call them). With Glassboard you can message a group of people quickly & easily (looks like a text on your phone but it isn't!), share photos and videos, and even show your location when appropriate. Everything within a board is _completely_ private. Only the board chair can invite you to a board, and there is no way for someone not invited to search or discover a board. It's your own private corner of the Internet.

The purpose of these toolkits is to make it easier for mobile device developers across device platforms to build applications that use Windows Azure to host services.

The initial release of the Windows Azure Toolkit for Android includes native libraries (for storage and authentication), a sample application, and unit tests. The updates for Windows Phone include support for SQL Azure in the Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows Phone, full support for Windows Azure Toolkits for Visual Studio 1.4 and Windows Developer Phone Tools 7.1 RC, and the full source code to the sample BabelCam which is now available in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

I talked to James at his office in Tampa, Florida about bringing Executive Caddie to Windows Phone 7 and about his companies use of Microsoft technologies in building out a set of products and services that can help golfers get the most they can out of the game.

I’ll admit, I was aware of some of these, but some were new to me.

Have you seen them all? Check out this list:

• Top 100s by Year by Bing: Currently free, this app lets you find and listen to the top songs from any particular year from 1947-2009.
• Hip Hop 100 by Bing: This app lets you listen to the latest news Hip Hog songs of 2010. It’s free for 60 days, then $.99 to buy.
• Pop 100 by Bing: Same as above, but for Pop songs.
• Classical 100 by Bing: Classical music top 100, again, $.99 to buy after 2 months.
• Ryan Seacrest’s Mixtapes by Bing: Listen to music, view photos, search videos, read news, and connect with Seacrest via Facebook, Twitter and email. New playlists added weekly. This one is $1.99 after 60 days.
• Chicktionary by Bing: Currently free (usually $1.99), this is a word game where you create words using letters…hatched by chickens.
• Conde Nast Traveler Gold List: Search, browse, share, and book the best hotels, resorts, and cruise lines around the globe as chosen by the world’s most trusted travelers the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. Powered by Bing.
• Vanity Fair Trivia Movie Madness: Trivia questions from Vanity Fair’s stable of film geeks with 25 levels.
• ESPN World Cup Trivia by Bing: World Cup 2010 may be over, but you can still quiz yourself on your knowledge of the games.

The team also notes that Bing functions as the search provider in a number of other apps, including Whrrl, iTV and Flixster, too.

To find these apps in iTunes just search by name.

However, if you’ve never monkeyed around with your phone’s settings, you may not know where to look to find this option. It’s not a feature you’ll find within the Web browser (Safari) itself, you actually have to go into the phone’s settings to make the switch.

It’s not hard though – it just takes a few steps:

1. Launch the iPhone’s “Settings” app
2. Scroll down to “Safari” and tap it to see Safari’s settings
3. Tap “Search Engine”
4. Tap “Bing”
5. Exit the Settings app

Done!

That was easy, wasn’t it?

From the home page, you’ll notice a “Social” option. You can use this feature to connect both your Twitter and Facebook accounts to the Bing app. After doing so, when you search for something using Bing, you’ll also see relevant results returned from your social network. For example, if you search for a movie, after the movie showtimes, the app will show what your friends on these networks have said about the movie itself.

Another new feature is visual scanning. Using the phone’s camera, you can scan the barcode of any product or the cover art of books, CDs, DVDs, or video games. This returns reviews, prices, and links to merchant websites, allowing you to perform comparison shopping right from your device.

Finally, the Movies section has been updated with more video and trailers and improved access to showtimes. The Shopping section has seen a few tweaks too, helping you find products, prices and links faster than before.

To get the new application, download it from iTunes now or just update the Bing app already on your phone.

With this new IM application, you can do more than just chat in real-time with friends. You can also use the app to view and comment on your friends’ status updates from around the social web, including those from Facebook, MySpace and the Windows Live service itself.

You can also see, News Feed-style, what your friends are sharing via other social services like Flickr, YouTube and all the others supported by Windows Live. In order to integrate these additional services into the IM application, you’ll need to set them up here using your Windows Live account.

As far as the IM features themselves, the new app lets you chat, receive messages even if the app is closed, upload and share photos with friends, create photo albums, add captions to photos, access your Hotmail email without leaving the app (read, reply and compose supported) and get email notifications within the app.

The app is available for free in iTunes.

But luckily for iPhone owners, there’s an app that can connect you to your company’s SharePoint sites via your device: Moshare. With this application, you can browse documents, send links, docs and texts, access contacts, view calendars and search across all data. Plus, you can access multiple SharePoint sites from the app, too.

Although you can’t edit or upload files using the app, it does provide quick access for read-only, file viewing…and sometimes, that’s all you need. Moshare is affordably priced at $1.99 and is available for download here.

First of all - and perhaps my favorite new feature of them all - is the bookmarking option. You can now bookmark things like maps, directions, websites, search terms, and even the weather. All of those bookmarks are then accessible right from the home screen.

You can also now share search results via email, copy and paste URLs, view and edit your search history, and set your phone’s location (or allow it to auto-locate). In addition, parents will appreciate the app’s parental control settings. Those who have young children will be glad that they can now set a “SafeSearch” level and create a passcode so it can’t be changed.

Finally, the new app supports older, 1st generation iPod Touches so everyone can now take advantage of Bing search on their mobile device.

According to the app’s description, iShare lets you browse and search through all your company files from your iPhone, including documents, lists, announcements, and meetings. You can search all of SharePoint, open and read documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, PNG/GIF/JPG), create, update, and delete list items, view and edit document metadata, and more.

The $9.99 app supports SharePoint Server 2007 and works with Office 2007, Windows SharePoint Services, and SharePoint Online. If your company hasn’t exposed SharePoint to the internet, you can first connect to your company using the iPhone’s built in VPN client then launch the app.

Using www.bing.com/visualsearch, you can perform web searches and see the results in a 3D-like grid of images. With the filters on the left, you can narrow down these results in order to see just what you’re looking for. Obviously, not all web searches benefit from visualization, but many do. For example, at launch time, some of the 100 or so of the already enabled categories included things like product searches, book searches, car searches, and searches for dog breeds, sports teams and more.

Now you can add “iPhone apps” to that list. As the MediaBistro blog noticed, using Bing is an excellent way to find new iPhone applications. After doing a search for top iPhone apps, you’re presented with a screen that displays the apps’ icons as thumbnails you can scroll through.

Filters on the left let you narrow the search by top free, top paid, newest, most expensive, top games, top entertainment, or top social networking. You can also narrow results by application category (finance, games, lifestyle, music, etc.), price, or publisher.

When you find an app you like, you can click on its thumbnail to be taken to a Bing search result page for its name where you’ll find links to its website, reviews, relevant articles, and more.

As it turns out, this is actually a much better way to navigate through the thousands of available applications than using Apple’s own iTunes software. And yes – surprise, surprise – it’s from Microsoft.

Although obviously not created by Microsoft, this handy tool points to the growing popularity of the Bing search engine and its features. The simple application retrieves the current day’s wallpaper for you from all the different Bing localized homepages. You can then move, zoom, or crop the image before setting it as your iPhone background. You can also save your favorite images to your phone and then sync them back to your PC too for backup.

The free app is available here on iTunes. Meanwhile, if you actually want to surf with Bing on your iPhone, just visit m.bing.com. Remember: you can set this as a homescreen icon, too, for easy access.
