Summary: The next generation of ALM brings stakeholders, developers and IT Pros closer together with new tooling, including connections to PowerPoint to allow stakeholders to build mock-ups of workflows, screens and other design elements that connect directly with ALM work items. On the operations side, the new ALM features connect to System Center Operations Manager, enabling operations personnel to report directly into Visual Studio any incidents in the operations of an application, including stack traces and current performance monitor data to speed the analysis and repair of production challenges.

I'm the General Manager for the Visual Studio team in the Developer Division at Microsoft, including Visual Studio Pro and Visual Studio Team System. I've been in the Developer Division for a long time (back to ODBC). I was lucky to be one of a
small handful of folks who started working on what would become the CLR back in '97. I worked primarily on the metadata, file formats, and compiler integration. I was the first dev lead for those features as well as the debugger/profiler. I was the Development
Manager for V1.1 and the first part of V2.0, and ultimately became the PUM of the team before taking the GM role first in .NET and then for Visual Studio.
I love writing code! And it is an amazing opportunity to work on a team where dogfooding my product requires means writing code. Please enjoy the .NET Framework and Visual Studio and make sure to send us your feedback!

With Visual Studio 2010 beta 1 out the door and available for your coding pleasure, we figured it would be a great time to talk to
Jason Zander about Visual Studio 2008, which has been available since, well, 2008. VS2008 introduced a lot of new technologies for developers to add to their arsenal. Which ones are successful? Which ones aren't being used as much as anticipated?
Of course, we also talk about the upcoming version of VS, VS 2010 (How could we not?). Jason is a developer at heart. He has code in Windows, in the CLR and other big shipping products. Last I talked to him, he ran the CLR team (and you've

CLR Team Tour, Part II - The Future of Languages (PDC panel preview)

With this second segment of our CLR Team pre-PDC tour we start out with Rico Mariani where we talk again about .NET performance and how to wring the most out of your .NET code.

Then we head off to meet a group of architects on the .NET team where they hint at the future of languages.

Brad Abrams is seen (this part starts at 11:55). Jim Miller, architect on the team joins Rico and Brad (and later Jason Zander, product unit manager) to talk about what they'll talk about at the PDC. These guys are among the smartest people at Microsoft, so this will be an interesting panel.

At about 27:30 Joe Duffy, our host, takes us to another group of people where we talk about dynamic languages in another preview of another PDC panel discussion. "Are we all going to switch to Ruby?" That's my question, which gets the discussion rocking and rolling. You also meet Erik Meijer, architect on SQL Server services (he's the language pimper).

"Show us the architecture of .NET on the whiteboard," is what we asked Jason Zander and that started out an interesting discussion of what .NET is.

That led into a discussion of .NET's garbage collector and determinalistic finalization that developers will find interesting (Charles Torre, developer on Channel 9, was asking the questions). It ends up with a discussion of "secrets of the CLR."

This is the final piece of our tour of the CLR team. Thanks Jason and to your team for giving us an interesting inside look at .NET.

Charles Torre, one of the developers who works on Channel 9's code, sat down with Jason Zander, Product Unit Manager of the .NET Common Language Runtime team. Here's the first part of that interview.

"Our team is a cross between compiler geeks and kernel geeks," Zander says in response to "What is the magic of the CLR?"

"We do the rocket science so you don't have to."

Oh, that's just the CLR team's lab where they are testing 64-bit versions of the .NET common language runtime. But, first, we drop into Adam Nathan's office where he shows us the pinvoke.net Web site. That concludes our tour of the CLR team, but next week we'll sit down with Jason Zander for an interview about what the CLR team is doing. CLR, by the way, stands for Common Language Runtime.

Do you know how hard it is walking backward while trying to aim a camcorder properly?

What is that that Kit George is working on (he's a program manager on the BCL team)? Hey, who said working on the CLR team is all work and no play? Ahh, the things developers do under the guise of testing serial port functionality. Heh.

You also meet Rico Mariani. He's part of the team that's tuning the .NET CLR (the engine at the heart of every .NET application) to get every last bit of performance out of it. Hear his ideas on performance tuning. His first hint? Pay attention to the numbers.
