Jnect for Eclipse - The Java to Kinect for Windows SDK bridge

We've seen VB.net Kinect for Windows SKD code examples/projects. C++ examples/projects. And, of course, C# examples/projects.

What about Java (Yes, Java)? What if you're a Java dev and live in Eclipse? Today's post is just for you...

Microsoft Kinect for Java and Eclipse in Jnect

An area where we find a high degree of innovation is in the way we communicate with computers and other electronic devices. Touch displays are almost a must-have for mobiles and speech control could be the next big thing in this area. Looking at the games market, every major player has a device allowing users to control games and even media features, using gestures instead of gamepads.

Microsoft Kinect is an example of such a device. Its cameras enable the tracking of a moving human body and provide this information to the Xbox 360 to interact with the game. For example, if the player jumps in the real world, its avatar in the game will also perform a jump. The precise tracking of Kinect also enables the control of more serious features, for example the selection of a movie to be watched. Additionally, Kinect is able to understand spoken commands using speech recognition.

Obviously, this technology could be used for more than controlling the Xbox. Microsoft has published an SDK for Windows, providing programmatic access to the data provided by the Kinect device. <itunes:summary>We've seen VB.net Kinect for Windows SKD code examples/projects. C++ examples/projects. And, of course, C# examples/projects. What about Java (Yes, Java)? What if you're a Java dev and live in Eclipse? Today's post is just for you... Microsoft Kinect for Java and Eclipse in JnectAn area where we find a high degree of innovation is in the way we communicate with computers and other electronic devices. This opens the potential use cases for Kinect to almost any kind of application. However, the SDK requires the programmer to write the application in C++/C# to access the SDK, and to date, there has been no support for Java. Jnect bridges this gap and creates interoperability between the Microsoft SDK and the Java world. The project provides an Eclipse plugin which uses JNI to connect with the Microsoft Kinect SDK. The plugin provides a Java API to use selected features offered by the original Microsoft SDK (see below).
Windows Azure Lessons Learned: Domino's Pizza

In this final "Azure Lessons Learned" post I chat with
Jim Vitek, Director of Ecommerce for
Domino’s Pizza. Domino’s is one of the largest ecommerce site out there. In 2009, Domino’s hit over 20 Million online transactions. That is one heck of a lot of pizza! As you can imagine Domino’s uses a ton of interesting technology in order to be able
to scale to those kinds of levels.

Availability is a critical requirement here as they only have a small window to take a order. When a Domino’s customer is hungry and ready to place the order you had better be ready to take that order. If the site is not available they’ll go elsewhere and
that order is lost.

As Jim states, Domino’s is a business of peaks. They have rushes every day (dinner). they have peak days of the week (Fridays) and they have peak days of the year (e.g. Super Bowl). Within about an hour on that one day of the year (i.e. Super Bowl Sunday)
Domino’s has a peak that’s about 50% higher than any other day of the year.

If you think that through, you’ll realize that, although Domino’s has to provision capacity to be able to handle the very highest peak in traffic, a huge percentage of the time much of Domino’s computing infrastructure is running idle.

Clearly there is a huge benefit to optimizing computing capacity while being able handle peak demand and innovate on new products and capabilities. Domino’s is looking to

Windows Azure to help them with that as they port their ecommerce solution.

Jim walked me through the Domino’s Build your Own Pizza app. It’s interesting to note it was running on Tomcat and written in Java all hosted in Windows Azure. That’s a clear testament that Windows Azure is as interoperable as Windows Server.

Jim’s main concern when building out this solution was that they remain portable. They expect to be able to run the same code in their own data centers or Windows Azure. Windows Azure allowed them to use the Java skills, tooling and infrastructure they were
using in their own data center.

Domino’s menus, product availability and pricing of their pizzas is done locally based on the neighborhood of the store you’re ordering from. As a result when you build a pizza online it has to query the local store to provide you with the correct price
you’ll pay before you order. They use Service Bus (now known as
AppFabric) to get the orders to the stores and pricing back from the store. Eventually that will also provide the information required for their

Pizza Tracker app.

Apache Stonehenge demoed at PDC09

A couple weeks ago,
Microsoft was at ApacheCon. We reported the progress made on the Stonehenge project and presented the roadmap.

The goal of Stonehenge is to provide a public forum to test the interoperability of WS-* protocols on different vendor stacks and to build sample applications that could provide best practices and coding guidelines for better interoperability. The main sample
application, StockTrader has been implemented on .NET (by Microsoft), PHP (by WSO2), WSAS JAVA stack (by WSO2), Metro (by SUN Microsystems), Spring (by SpringSource). The latest version of StockTrader uses the WS-Security and WS-Trust protocols for claims-based
authentication scenarios. This allows the end-users to be authenticated through an independent Security Token Service (STS) that is trusted by the bank and to pass that token to the broker to process the transaction.

This week at PDC09, we were demoing the project. I went to see Kent Brown, product manager for WCF and asked him to give us an update and show a demo of the different StockTrader applications working together.

Watch the video till the end, Kent unveils the mystery on why the project was called Stonehenge!

which can take full advantage of special Windows 7 features.

And you can find more information about these interoperability tools here:

As hard as it might be to believe, not everybody is using Visual Studio as their development platform. Then what if they want to develop a Silverlight application? Is notepad their only option?

Fortunately not. Vijay Rajagopalan did a session at MIX09 earlier this year which shows how we've been working hard to provide interoperability support for Eclipse users that not only allows them to use Eclipse as their development environment, but also allows
them to integrate their Silverlight applications into PHP, Ruby, or Java.

And if you want more details, you can watch Vijay's MIX09 session here:

David Chappell - The Microsoft Application Platform: A perspective

What is an application platform? Why is it important? And how should we think about application platforms in a world of cloud computing? In this session, David Chappell looks at all of these topics, providing a general model for both on-premises and cloud
platforms. He then uses this model to examine several important issues in this area, including the competition between .NET and Java, why SOA is failing, and how the Microsoft platform compares with its on-premises and cloud competitors.

This video is recorded at the Dutch DevDays in Den Haag The Netherlands in June 2009. DevDays is the largest industry event for developers in the Netherlands. Thousands of professional developers visit DevDays yearly to keep in touch with the latest developments
in their field.
