Larry Osterman is a legend and one of Channel 9's favorite personalities - it's been too long since you've been on C9, Larry! Now, what would happen if C9 hero Erik Meijer interviewed Larry? Well, you'd get the latest episode of Checking In and one heck of a conversation. Oh yeah. Larry's been at Microsoft for over 26 years and he's been a software developer (SDE) for almost all of this time (he dabbled in management briefly, but writing software is what he really loves to do). He's well known for his work on the Windows audio subsystem. But what else has Larry worked on over the years? How did he land at Microsoft? What's his story? We cover several topics ranging from STL to Larry's Microsoft job interview with Steve Ballmer.

Elliot H Omiya, Larry Osterman and Frank Yerrace: Inside Windows 7 - Audio Stack

One of the central engineering and design themes of Windows 7 is efficiency: efficiency in user experience (things work as and when expected, reliably), efficiency in processing, execution, diagnostics, performance, scheduling, window managment, graphics, desktop search, etc. Well, not surprisingly, Windows 7's audio system has been engineered to provide very efficient user experience (when you plug your headphones in the system streams music to your headphones as expected. When you remove them Windows will switch the stream to flow into your speakers - this is known as real time stream switching - but how does it work, exactly?). What, exactly, is new in the Windows audio system? What's been improved since Vista? What is sound, really? (Yes, we talk about this at the end of the interview - interesting stuff indeed). You first learned about some of the updates to Windows audio in an interview with Larry in September '08. We dig into more detail here (whiteboard included plus we discuss a few things you probably do not know about...)

Here, Architect Elliot H Omiya, Principal Software Developer Larry Osterman and Principal Software Developer Frank Yerrace take us through the details of Windows 7 audio, including some history, some design decisions, some hard problems and overall a great conversation about how Windows makes noise (or music - it's all relative ).

Throwing Ten Thousand bouncy balls down a stairwell

David Norris and Larry Osterman are classic Microsoft pranksters (watch their original Channel 9 interview for how they pranked Steve Ballmer, among others).

One of their weapons of choice is the bouncy ball and this (now declassified) video from midnight on April 1st, 2006 shows what happens when you throw ten thousand rubber bouncy balls down six flights of a stairwell.

We asked Larry about times he's had working interactions with Bill Gates (co-founder of Microsoft).

Larry remembered one interaction he had back when he was a coder on the DOS networking stack in LAN Manager 2.0.

Ahh, the good old days when you only had 640k of RAM to fit into. Sure is different from today when Microsoft
owns computers that have a terabyte of RAM.

Actually, between the filming of this video, and its display here,
Larry had dinner with Gates and a group of other 20-year-veterans of Microsoft.

Larry Osterman - 20 years at Microsoft

Larry Osterman has been working at Microsoft for 20 years as a software design engineer. 20 years, think about that one for a while. When he started working at Microsoft Ronald Reagan was the guy up for
reelection. The Space Shuttle hadn't had a disaster yet. The Apple Macintosh had just shipped with a whopping 128KB of RAM.

All this week you'll hear Larry tell some fun stories from the past 20 years of working at Microsoft. Hope you enjoy meeting Larry as much as we did.
