Edge Show 44 - Data Protection Manager (DPM) Enhancements in System Center 2012 SP1

In this video, Symon Perriman meets with Prabu Rambadran, a Product Marketing Manager in Windows Server & Management, to discuss the upcoming changes in System Center 2012 SP1 for Data Protection Manager (DPM). First Prabu gives an overview of the feature enhancements in DPM for System Center 2012 before focusing on the improvements coming in Service Pack 1 (SP1) and how they take advantage of Windows Server 2012 capabilities. Next Prabu and Symon discuss improvements with backing up and restoring virtual machines, including host-based backups, VM backups, and backups for applications running inside VMs. They spend a few minutes talking about the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and the differences of VSS-aware applications as regards backup. Then they discuss the differences between backup and disaster recovery, and how to utilize the Hyper-V Replica feature in Windows Server 2012. Finally, they discuss improved integration to backup Linux and Unix VMs, along with simplified management of multiple DPM servers through System Center 2012 SP1 Operations Manager (SCOM). Prabu ends the interview by showing a demo of backup and restore capabilities to Windows Azure at [17:35].

Overview of Microsoft Technical Computing and HPC Server 2008R2

A high level synopsis of Microsoft's Technical Computing offerings is presented by Ryan Waite, General Manager for High Performance Computing. The sheer size of generated data is a key driver in today's computational ecosphere. By the end of 2010, over 1.2 zetabyte of data will have been generated. Microsoft has been working closely with Intel to integrate their Parallel Studio product into Visual Studio 2010. R2 is Microsoft's third release of the HPC product built on Windows, scalable to thousands of nodes. This release realizes the product team's vision of democratizing high performance computing, simplifying ease-of-use by means of intuitive interfaces such as Excel 2010, while meeting the performance needs of the HPC community. The distributed memory and resource model is implemented in Microsoft's cloud computing solution, with automated service management, relational storage, and information management suites available on the Windows Azure platform. From client, to cluster, to cloud, our customers' computational challenges are covered.

Excel services for Windows HPC Server 2008R2

Microsoft Excel has become an indispensible calculation, prototyping, and simulation tool that handles complex multi-variable models. A fictitious case study is described where the customer, an insurance underwriter, explores over one trillion scenarios to optimize investments that hedge its financial obligations. Integration of Excel 2010 and Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 maintains the Excel front end but offloads the calculation workload to the cluster. The result is a reduction of compute time by a factor of ten on a modest four-node cluster.

Please join Clustercorp and Microsoft to learn about Rocks+Hybrid -- a combination of the commercial version of the Rocks® Cluster Distribution for Linux and Microsoft Windows® HPC Server 2008. The joint solution is a simple to use product for deploying dual-boot HPC systems that run Linux and Windows natively in a single cluster. In this webcast we'll discuss Rocks+Hybrid from both an end-user and architectural perspective -- attendees will come away with a new perspective on how easily they can make dual-boot clusters a part of their data center!

In a hybrid environment, the Rocks+ head node provides the same services as in a homogeneous Rocks+ environment. The Rocks+ standard node discovery process is largely unchanged, except that when a hybrid node is discovered, the system is automatically configured for the dual-boot nature of the hybrid nodes. Newly discovered nodes will install both Linux and Windows operating systems onto the local drive without user intervention, then return to running Rocks+ at the end of the install process – ready to run end-user applications in either operating system.

Rocks+ also enables continued management and maintenance of hybrid clusters with Windows HPC Server. Rocks+ uses an end-to-end Linux-Windows deployment scheme any time a change is made to the stack, which means nodes are set in a known good state. This allows for simple maintenance, upgrades, and even push-button replacements of failed nodes. Adding a node to a Rocks+Hybrid cluster is as simple as powering the server on with it set to PXE (network) boot. Don't miss this informative webcast!

Moonlight 2.0 Now in Beta

Moonlight, the Linux implementation of Microsoft’s Silverlight technology, has just hit another milestone: version 2.0 (beta). This latest update follows the Moonlight preview originally released in May. If you were already running the preview release, you’ll be prompted to update the next time you launch your web browser.

The version number, “2.0,” means that Moonlight is now compatible with all Silverlight 2.0 websites on the net. Although Silverlight 3.0 has already been released, it will take time for it to be fully adopted notes Mono project founder Miguel de Icaza on his blog. With this version of Moonlight, says de Icaza, users will be able to access “most Silverlight content out there today.”

You can download Moonlight as either a Mozilla plugin for Linux systems running on x86 or x86-64 or you can access the Moonlight source code. For more details on the release, check the Beta 1 Release Notes.

Microsoft Contributes Code to the Linux Kernel

Today Microsoft released 20,000 lines of device driver code to the Linux Community. The code, which includes three Linux device drivers, has been submitted to the Linux kernel community for inclusion in the Linux tree.

Sam Ramji, Senior Director of Platform Strategy, and Tom Hanrahan, Director of the Open Source Technology Center, discuss the release of this code under General Public License v2 and how both customer and community demand is driving better integration between Windows and Linux.

In the coming months we hope to feature more videos from the Open Source Technology Center engineers and developers. For now, as Sam mentions in the video, please let us know your thoughts on this announcement and also any suggestions you may have for future videos you would like to see from the Open Source Technology Center.

Charles Torre sits down with Martin Taylor and Bill Hilf and chats about Linux, Windows and Microsoft.

Martin Taylor is Microsoft's General Manager of Competitive Strategy. He's the guy that's been known to wear bullet proof vests at Linux conferences and reaches out to the Linux/OSS community by throwing himself into the SlashDot fire. Remember that phone interview?

Bill Hilf is a Linux developer and Microsoft Technical Director of Platform Strategy. He runs a really nifty lab where his team of Linux hackers explore the world of distros and compare Windows technologies with Linux technologies. You'll see the lab in the second part of the interview.
