Tellme, a mobile voice search application, has just announced a new app for Windows Mobile 6.5 phones.
Go Green with Live Search

For Earth Day, the Live Search team has posted some interesting information from an MSN study which says that almost 70% of Americans said that they would never start composting kitchen scraps nor limit their toilet flushes to conserve water.
Live Search Adds More Instant Answers

Earlier this month I told you about how you can use Live Search to check your flight status thanks to new one box results that include date, times, departure and arrival points, and links to live tracking provided by Farecast. Now the Live Search team has added in something else, which along with flight status, is considered a part of the new “Instant Answers” feature of the service. This latest addition is an Instant Answer for March Madness news. (That’s the NCAA tournament here in the U.S.). Just type in the search query “NCAA tournament”, “March Madness”, or “college basketball” and you will get the latest scores (as pictured to the left). You can also type in just the name of a team you want to see and you’ll get more details about their current rank:

Looking Forward to Viveri: An Experimental Search Site

If you visit Viveri today, you’ll only see a placeholder with an “under construction” sign, but come later this summer this website will become Microsoft’s testing bed for experimental search technologies. Some of the features launched on Viveri will make their way into Live Search, but which ones those will be is to going to be based on user feedback.

The idea behind Viveri is for Microsoft to have a place where new concepts can be tested and users can provide feedback directly to search engineers. Think of it as sort of a “Search Labs” type of venture.

At the recent Tech Fest event, attendees got to see Viveri in action. One example of a feature that Vivieri users will soon be testing was a world cloud of additional queries related to the search terms entered. Another feature showed results from niche search engines appearing next to the main results in separate modules. For example, a product search returned results from Amazon and a health-related search brought up a WebMD module.

The Feature I Want: The Real-Time Web

That “module” concept immediately made me think how useful a side module of Twitter results could be if implemented. Imagine searching for something on the web and seeing real-time results from Twitter appear to the right of the traditional web results. <itunes:summary> If you visit Viveri today, you’ll only see a placeholder with an “under construction” sign, but come later this summer this website will become Microsoft’s testing bed for experimental search technologies. The Feature I Want: The Real-Time WebThat “module” concept immediately made me think how useful a side module of Twitter results could be if implemented. Imagine searching for something on the web and seeing real-time results from Twitter appear to the right of the traditional web results. The real-time results would have to refresh of course, like they do on search.twitter.com, in order to be truly useful. Or even better (perhaps), what if the side module could contain updates from Facebook’s Live Feed? Everybody’sbeen saying lately how an engine that searched the real-time web could be the big “Google killer.” I think that’s a bit optimistic – changing ingrained habits tends to be a much slower process. However, that said, I could definitely see myself, as an early adopter, migrating to a search engine that integrated the real-time web results with the static ones.
New Ubiquity Command for Live Search

If you’re a user of the experimental Firefox add-on called
Ubiquity, then you’ll want to go check out the new command available from
Powerset for performing
Live Search queries. In case you don’t know,Ubiquity lets you interact with your browser using a command-line interface and natural language – something which some people say is a must faster way of getting things done.

The new Live Search command now available lets you instantly get search results from Live.com by typing the word “live” before your query. For example, type “live sean penn” to get Live Search results for Sean Penn. You can also type “live images sean penn”
to get a list of images or “live xrank sean penn” to get
Sean Penn’s xRank answer. The Powerset team said it was really simple to do this thanks to
the new JSON API offered by Live Search.

New Version Live Search for Mobile

The Live Search Mobile Team recently released an update for their Live Search Mobile application for Windows Mobile. The new version adds several additional browser and client features to the program, making it better than ever before.

One of the most helpful new features is predictive query input, which helps you by suggesting commonly typed in words and phrases when you’re entering in text in the search box.

This feature displays after only entering in a couple of letters. It also remembers what you have entered in before, so for example, if you’re constantly looking for the nearest sushi restaurant or Starbucks (I know I am!), those terms will be always be handy in the drop-down list.

Another big improvement to the app is the integration of the “Bird’s Eye” view in the mapping part of the application.
2009 Will Be A Good Year For Travelers

After reviewing the ups and downs of 2008, Mike Fridgen, the Director of Product Management at Farecast, released his predictions for travel in 2009. Mainly, Mike identified three main factors that will affect airfare pricing: consumer demand, oil prices, and capacity cuts.

Because of the economy, demand for travel decreased in 2008 and he believes this will continue in 2009, which will lead airlines to lower their prices in order to fill seats. Assuming oil prices stay low in 2009 (he thinks they will), airlines will pull back on surcharges which will also allow fares to drop. Finally, he sees capacity remaining flat in 2009. All this leads to his belief that 2009 will be a good year for those looking to travel, particularly in the winter and spring months.

Says Mike, “airlines and hotels are going to have to convince people to spend money on travel, which could mean a lot of deals and sales. I think there will be a lot of tinkering with fares as airlines try to find the right mix and that will lead to a lot of price movements.” In other words, there may be deals, but you’ll have to be quick in order to catch them.

One way to stay updated on those elusive deals is, of course, to use Farecast. With Farecast Alerts, you can grab a deal the second prices drop. You may also wanted to keep the Farecast Deals page bookmarked so you can keep an eye on the deals in your market.

Windows Live Hotmail “Quick Add”

Well that’s handy! Jamie pointed out a feature of the new Windows Live Hotmail (Wave 3) that you may have not have heard about before. The feature is called “Quick Add” and it allows you to easily insert web content in your email message from a bar that appears on the right side of your screen.

In the Quick Add bar, you’ll see the options: Maps, Restaurants, Movie times, Images, Videos, and Business listings. If you’re composing a message where you needed to include one of these types of things – say, for example, directions to a party, the restaurant you’re suggesting for dinner, the photo of the gadget you’ve been lusting after, etc. – you can easily add them directly into your message with ease.

After clicking your choice from the list, you’re presented with a search box which allows you to query the Live.com engine. The results appear right in the sidebar and underneath each one is an option to add the item to your email. Simply click on the word “Insert” and the map, restaurant, photo, etc. will automatically be added to your email.

First I inserted the restaurant info…

Then I inserted the map!

That’s a pretty great feature, if I do say so myself.
Get 25% Cash Back On eBay Purchases

About to click “buy it now” in eBay? Wait! Before you do so, did you know that if you do a search on
Live.com that results in a sponsored link click-through to eBay, you can get 25% off the item you purchase if it’s a Buy-it-now auction? To get this deal, just go to
www.live.com and do a web search for the item you’re looking for. Then, in the sponsored links section on the right, look to see if any of the links have a “Live Search Cashback” link next to them.

Heck yeah, Live.com just became my eBay search engine. The fine print to this deal isn’t all that complicated either – the only requirement is that you pay via PayPal, which I think most eBay’ers do anyway, right?

However, please not that you can only receive up to $200 cash back from the Live.com folks, so keep that in mind when you go to purchase that small island you were looking at.

The Live Search team has just updated their xRank site’s special U.S. election feature with new information. Now, xRank Politician includes all the candidates running for president, governor, and congress. On the site, you can compare the search trends for opposing candidates to see who’s being searched for more often. There’s also biographical info on the candidates, links to news stories, photos and videos on each candidate’s page. You can click on the thumbnails of the videos to play them right on the site, too, just like in Live Search News – you don’t have to leave the page. Some interesting findings so far – Sarah Palin is searched for far more often than Joe Biden, but Obama and McCain are neck-and-neck.

Live Search Now In Facebook

In case you hadn’t heard, Live Search has just now been integrated into one of the biggest social networks in the world: Facebook. As Facebook announced on their blog, this is the “first step in giving you the ability to find content from across the web while using Facebook.” What this means is that when you’re doing a search on Facebook, you’ll now see the option to “Search Facebook” or “Search the Web.” This a big deal for those of you who live your entire lives on Facebook – now you can find the additional information you need without having to leave the site. One thing you may have noticed, as those over at VentureBeat did, the Facebook-flavored Live Search results appear somewhat different than the same query performed on www.live.com. According to a statement from Facebook, that’s because Facebook removes sponsored results (those results which people have paid for) in addition to using a few different filters, according to the company.

What’s really exciting, though, is that this is only the first step involving the integration of Live Search and Facebook, according to Agnus Norton, Senior Director, Live Search Product Management: “As we evaluate user feedback and results we'll explore additional ways to integrate Live Search more deeply into the Facebook experience.”

What do you think of the Live Search integration? You can communicate to the team directly on, where else? – their Facebook page.

Live Search Perks Launches

To complement Live Search Cashback, the program that pays shoppers to search for products using live.com, there now comes another incentives program from the Live Search team: Live Search Perks. With this new program, available in the U.S. only, you simply download a program to your computer which tracks how many times you use Live Search. The program doesn’t track what you’re searching or any other info about your search habits, only when you use Live Search. As you search, you’re given “tickets” for using Live Search which can then be redeemed for prizes. Those prizes aren’t too shabby either: 525 tickets gets you 5 free music downloads; 1800 gets you 1,000 free air miles. You can also choose to donate your tickets to charity, if you would like. The program is being limited to the first 250,000 users who sign up through December 31. The program ends April 15, 2009.

Powerset Integration In Live Search

Sometimes, when a bigger company acquires a smaller one, it’s the end of innovation for the little guy as they slowly fade into non-existence. That was definitely NOT the case with the Microsoft Powerset acquistion. According to this post on the Powerset blog, the Live Search team and the Powerset crew are already integrating Powerset-powered search results into Live Search. There are three areas where results have have been enhanced so far: 1) queries where Live Search shows Answers now incorporate data from Freebase, 2) improved captions for Wikipedia articles, and 3) related searches which now display related articles in the sidebar. All three of these enhancements are being “flighted” on Live Search, which means they are only being shown to a small percentage of users. This is done for testing purposes before they roll out new features to everyone.
