Use Windows Live Writer with Posterous

I just came across a great tip for Posterous bloggers on the LifeRocks blog. If you’re among those who prefer Posterous’s simplified blogging platform over the more complex options from Moveable Type, Wordpress and the like, you’ll be happy to know that you can use Windows Live Writer to post to Posterous.

Now why would you want to do that considering that Posterous is already one of the easiest platforms to publish to? Well, maybe you want to send the same post to both your traditional blog or website and your Posterous blog at the same time. If you create the post in WLW, that’s possible. You would just write the post once, publish it to one site, then switch blogs to publish it a second time to the other site. Or maybe you just prefer WLW’s interface over anything else (I know I do!).

In order to support Posertous publishing, you’ll need to grab the Writerous plugin from Codeplex. Once installed, you access the new settings via Tools –> Options –> Writerous from WLW’s main menu. Here, you’ll have to provide your Posterous login info and site name (the latter if you maintain more than one Posterous blog). You can also configure your Posterous posts to autopost to Twitter and Facebook, too, by checking the box next to that option.

For more details on how to configure and use the plugin, check out the project’s page here.

Note: For those of you new to
channel9 viewing, many different formats are available for download besides viewing in the default player; everything from Zune to WMV High Quality. Simply locate the dropdown menu below the embedded player on this page for your desired download selection.
If the default view stops to buffer often, then I recommend trying to download WMV High Quality. You can clearly see code, all video and PowerPoint’s in High Def (HD) at full screen. It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes to download this episode at average
home speed connections. The high def WMV file is a little over 315 Meg.

Remember, you have to know the code to get into the shed. KNOW THE CODE. Get some popcorn and enjoy the show! Russ

So how did I not know that there’s a Windows Sidebar gadget just for Live Writer? Awesome. This is my new must-have for all my Windows machines.

The Windows Live Writer Gadget provides shortcuts to routine tasks performed in Windows Live Writer. With the gadget, you can create a new blog entry, open a previous blog entry, or even open the Windows Live Writer options right from your Vista Sidebar. You can even drag and drop items right onto the gadget, too, including images, and URLs, image URLs. Each time you drag and drop an item, the gadget will open up a new blog entry in Live Writer with the relevant details already inserted.

The latest version of the gadget offers two different sizes which are configurable in the gadget’s settings and the gadget also now works on Windows Vista x64 systems.
Find And Replace For Windows Live Writer

I sometimes wonder how I even managed to blog before the invention of Windows Live Writer. It is absolutely one of the best blogging software programs out there. No, scratch that. It is the best. One of the greatest things about this software, though, is its extendibility through the use of plugins. We’ve highlighted several of ourfavorites before, but we’ve neglected to mention one of the best: Search and Replace. This plugin is very much like what you see in Microsoft Word as it allows for advanced options like matching the case and supports regular expressions.

Another developer also recently created a similar, but much simpler, Autoreplace plugin which will replace any words you enter into the editor. To install this one, click here and save the file into your plugins folder. For the Search and Replace plugin, this is the download here (.msi file).

Insert a Screen Capture to Windows Live Writer

There's a new plugin for Windows Live Writer that will help you easily insert a screen capture into your blog post. There's no installer for the plugin yet (next week it will be in the Gallery), but it's easy to implement. You just need to download this file and copy it to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Writer\Plugins directory. Then re-open Live Writer and you'll see an "Insert Screen Capture" link in the sidebar. Thanks to Joe Cheng for this plugin! (via/img courtesy of Digital Inspiration)
