Go Hyperlocal with Bing's Local Lens

“Local Lens” is one of Bing’s cooler features that displays hyperlocal content from various blogs on Bing Maps. Once enabled, snippets from blog posts appear in the sidebar when viewing a specific locale in the maps service. The feature, introduced late last year, is one of Bing’s many “mapplications” – applications that add a new layer of data to Bing Maps. In this case, blog posts from your hometown or, in some cases, specific neighborhoods.

This is one of Bing’s undiscovered gems, I think, since map apps that add Photosynth, Twitter, traffic, and Streetside Photos are the ones getting all the attention these days. Local Lens is certainly deserving of a deeper look too.

I was reminded of Local Lens when Matthew Hurst updated his blog with a note about an update just pushed out on Thursday, the 18th. The backend text mining systems which recognize map entity names (restaurants, shops, etc.) and addresses has been improved, he says. Now, even when an address isn’t obvious (e.g. “123 Main St.”), Local Lens can pick it up. In the example on his blog, he cited an article which read “Irving Street remained closed between 19th and 20th.” Local Lens can identify that more complex expression as an address and hyperlink it to an exact location on the map. Click the link and the map zooms right to that location.

The only downside regarding this technology is that it has just been rolled out for a handful of major U.S. cities for now. At the moment, only Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, L.A., Miami, NYC, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle are supported. I only hope the next update will add more cities soon!

ESRI has been working to extend that functionality to Windows Azure and SQL Azure. MapIt takes advantage of SQL Azure to consume location-based data. The MapIt spatial data service can be deployed as a role on Windows Azure and provides spatial data capabilities

Bing Maps Update: Map Embeds and Draggable Routes

The Bing Maps service recently received a major update this week with a slew of new features including draggable routes, a zoom bar, command parsing, embeddable maps, new navigation, and more. The updated Bing Maps also loads faster thanks to a reduced homepage size (it went from from 678KB to 484KB) as well as a feature called “dynamic computer” which loads the service from the data center closest to you.

The new draggable routes feature lets you customize the auto-generated route from point A to point B when using the Driving Directions feature. Now you can just grab anywhere on the route to move it around. After placing the route in the new position, Bing Maps will regenerate the route for you.

Another much-requested feature is the new embeddable maps option. You can now copy the embed code available from the “Share” button for any map and then paste the code into your website or blog. You can also further customize the map, if you wish using the “Customize View” option. This lets you adjust the height and width of the embed, choose from different map styles (aerial, aerial with labels, etc.), the map type (static or draggable), and more.

The Bing Maps search box is now smarter, too. It can understand what you want to see with less text input on your part. For example, if you want directions, you can just type the beginning destination, the word “to,” and then the end destination. For example, “Tampa, FL to Clearwater Beach, FL.” The begging or end points can even be a landmark or business listing, instead of an actual city or street. And if you’re just looking for traffic information, you can just type “[City] Traffic.” For example, “Tampa traffic.” This quickly brings up one of Bing’s unique features which shows the traffic times in your area using color-coded lines to indicate traffic speeds.

Other new features include improved zooming options, new navigational features, and “world wrap,” meaning that Bing Maps no longer stops at the international date line – you can keep moving around and around the globe while using the service.

For more details on the new options, check out the Bing Team blog post about the update.

Bing Updates: Streetside Views, Photosynth, and "Mapplications"

Bing just unveiled a number of updates now available in the Bing Maps service. At Microsoft’s San Francisco campus, select journalists and other attendees were given a first look at the new Bing Maps Beta on Wednesday. Included in the update were a number of new features including streetside views, Photosynth integration, and “mapplications,” aka “Bing Map Apps” which let you layer data from different services over top of the map you’re viewing. (Check out the video on Channel 9 to see these features in action). The new streetside view takes advantage of Silverlight 3 technology to provide ground-level photos of a scene which can be rotated 360 degrees and zoomed in and out of, just like with any Silverlight interface. The new view also shows street labels, vector info, and uses reverse geocoding to identify your location with an address block. Also taking advantage of Silverlight 3, the always amazing “Bird’s Eye” view has been updated as well. This view shows buildings as 3D models, which, if you’ve ever tried it, is a much better way to see an area than by viewing traditional aerial photography. And while in this view, you can click on a button of a little blue man representing your location to jump right into streetside view. Another feature in the beta is native Photosynth integration. Any synth geo-tagged on Photosynth.com is now available within Bing Maps for viewing. You can turn this feature on from the new Application Gallery. This App Gallery hosts a number of “mapplications” in addition to Photosynth which let you mash up various services with Bing Maps. For example, a Twitter app displays geo-tagged tweets on the map – even if you’re in streetview. An app called “Local Lens” adds hyperlocal info from blogs and feeds to the map and the “What’s Nearby” app aggregates Yelp and Citysearch data to show nearby businesses and restaurants. These are the three biggest updates to the Bing Maps service, but there are more improvements too, including minor enhancements like integrated 1-Click Directions, simplified navigation controls, local search integration, and a lot more. For all the details, check out the Bing Team’s blog post.

Track Hurricanes at MSNBC

As we enter into hurricane season, there’s no shortage of sites and tools for monitoring the latest news, viewing satellite imagery, and getting other storm-related information online. As I write this, I’m watching as Hurricane Gustav pounds the still-recovering Gulf Coast of Louisiana and already there’s another storm, Hurricane Hanna, on its way to Georgia (well, possibly – you know how these things go).

This season, weather watchers can track these and all other future storms using the new MSNBC Hurricane Tracker. Built on top of Virtual Earth, you can pick a storm to track from the dropdown provided (the link reads “more”) to see its path displayed on a map alongside other information like wind speed, ground speed, and pressure. Circles representing the eye of the storm are color-coded to denote how strong the storm is (Category 1 – 5) and when you hover your mouse over them, the exact GPS coordinates display. The bottom left side of the screen has a graph that shows a progress of the storm over time. You can also zoom in and out, pan, and rotate the map to get a better look. The Hurricane Tracker is a really handy tool to use to see exactly where the storms are and where they are headed, too.

For anyone in the path of any of these storms, we hope you take precautions and stay safe.
trueSpace: Realistic, High-Res 3D Modeling for VE and Live Maps

Back in February, Microsoft acquired a company called Caligari mainly for their 3D modeling and animation software, trueSpace. As of now, trueSpace is available for download – for free. With trueSpace, you can create high-resolution models, landscapes, buildings, and more for Virtual Earth and Live Maps. After creating these models, they can then be uploaded from trueSpace directly into Live Maps as a collections item. Why is trueSpace important? Well, for one, this is not sketching software – these aren’t drawings, but detailed, rich and realistic models. For example, take this Starbucks model (image to the left - see the full video on Chris Pendleton’s blog). This could either be a 3D model of the actual store or a mockup of one they’re thinking of building. That mockup could then be aaded to Live Maps in order to get feedback from the community. Even better, trueSpace supports importing of models drawn within other 3D software environments, including AutoCAD, Illustrator, and more. (The full list is here). For more details on how to use trueSpace, Chris has a great walkthough on his site.
Ask Maps Are Now Virtual Earth

Big news! Chris Pendleton is reporting that Ask.com has decided to forgo their mapping service in favor of the Virtual Earth platform. If you go to maps.ask.com now, you’ll see a Virtual Earth map.
Photo Mosaic Made With VirtualEarth

It seems that lately, a lot of people have been using Virtual Earth to do some pretty amazing things. First there was this amazing DeepZoom thing and just recently, I located the blog belonging to the folks behind that project. Here, an older entry shows off a photo mosaic made with VirtualEarth tiles. John O’Brien created this image of the Sydney Opera House from maps.live.com using a bunch of tiles from the road and aerial views of the Live Maps image using images found in his PC’s cache. Then, using a tool called AndreaMosaic (it works on 64-bit, too!), he created the mosaic you see at the left of this post. If you want to make your own mosaics, too, there’s a tutorial here on how to use the AndreaMosaic software.

April's Virtual Earth Updates

The Virtual Earth team had a busy April, adding 22 TB of data throughout the month to bring us even more Bird's Eye and aerial imagery to Virtual Earth/Live Search Maps. The update included new images in both formats for certain areas worldwide, and Bird's Eye images added for major cities in Canada (Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Victoria, Edmonton, Vancouver), Australia (Gold Coast, Sydney, Hobart, Wollongong), and parts of Europe (UK, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Greece). However, my favorite new images from this update are the Bird's Eye images of the Sydney Opera House. By using the rotate buttons in VE, I could see the Opera House from angles that you usually never see in photos of the iconic landmark.

I'm constantly impressed by VE's imagery - even my house (which is outside of Tampa in Pasco County, Florida - an area that doesn't often get updated), shows up in both aerial and Bird's Eye view with recent images (I can tell because of our brand-new landscaping in the yard), while other mapping services still show outdated images of my neighborhood. Check to see if your house has a Bird's Eye view of it yet - you'll be impressed! (via LiveSide)

New release of Virtual Earth

This application just keeps getting better and better. My favorite part about this, is the 3D modeling feature in the authoring section. I love the way the tools we use to make our lives easier are more and more turning into mini-games. Besides that they've done a seamless blend of 3D imagery with Live Search. There's a ton more stuff to help you learn things and get from point A to point B in style. Take a look.

3-D Models in Virtual Earth

This week a new application for Microsoft Virtual Earth launched. 3DVIA is an online app that lets you create 3-D models and share them through Virtual Earth and online communities. To use 3DVIA, you first need to "install 3D", the option available under the "Explore" section of http://maps.live.com. Then you can download 3DVIA from here or just click "Add a 3D model" from the "Collections" menu. Using the 3DVIA app, with a few clicks, you can design a 3-D model of your home, your favorite building, or any structure you want. You can give your creation different visualization options, textures, and colors to make it your own. The models you create can then be uploaded to Virtual Earth, after specifying an address or neighborhood, so you can see your model in "real life." Your 3-D models can also be added to various collections and shared with friends in web communities, like the groups over on the 3DVIA website. Time to build!
