Technical Interview: At [04:25] Symon talks with Justin Incarnato, a Senior Program Manager for System Center, about the upcoming changes in System Center 2012 SP1 for Orchestrator. After explaining the release cycle for Service Pack 1, Justin gives an overview of Orchestrator and its history in joining the System Center 2012 family after Microsoft's acquisition of Opalis. Symon and Justin then talk about the importance of integration in a private cloud environment and how Orchestrator has the ability to support and automate processes for virtually any piece of software or hardware in the datacenter, including VMware. Next they discuss the enhancements made for SP1, including: improved System Center integration; new Integration Packs for Azure, REST, FTP, and Exchange; support for Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012; and globalization efforts that give the product many new language options. At [12:25] Justin demos a series of workflows, including cloning VMs in a VMware vSphere environment, integrating alerts with HP Operations Manager, and updating calendar appointments with Exchange with Office 365.

According to a post on the Docs blog, you can now tag your documents with keywords, which will allow you to better find your files in a large list. Also new is an improved search feature which lets you drill-down into your friends’ public document lists or see related files. While in these lists, you can sort by date, title, and file type. And finally, from anywhere on Docs.com, you can now search for files by people, places or tags.

These features for better organization and discovery will come in handy as September rolls around and kids, teens and college students head back to school. Since nearly everyone uses Facebook these days to communicate, having a central place to store, collaborate and share your files will be handy to students discussing homework assignments – especially those working on group projects, we’d imagine.

But keep in mind that  students aren’t the only ones who can benefit from Docs.com. On the app’s Facebook page, underneath the “upload a doc” section, there’s a separate section called “use Docs + Facebook.” It’s here that you’ll find some really interesting tools.

The first, “Create a Resume,” automatically accesses your Facebook profile for your work and education history and contact information, and instantly creates a formatted and editable resume you can share with your friends.

The “Chart Your Friends” application accesses your friends’ Facebook profile info to instantly create a chart of your friends’ details, including things like ages, gender mix, location, etc.

And the third app, “Make a Photo Slideshow,” instantly creates a PowerPoint from your Facebook photos. Like all Docs.com docs, you can view or edit the file online or download it to your computer.

All the docs created on Docs.com also offer a shortened URL perfect for tweeting, posting in a status update or sending via text message. If you’ve never used Docs.com yet, you can do so by adding the app here.

If you’re a home user or student, you should definitely check out the entry-level Office package, Office Home & Student. It’s only $149 and comes with the most essential Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

A step up from that is Office Home & Business which includes the four above programs plus Microsoft Outlook. (Casual email users can likely get away with the free Windows Live Mail instead, if they want a desktop app or the new Hotmail, if they prefer a webmail program).  This version is $279.95.

The Professional version of Office is for advanced users who want it all: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access. This edition is $499.95. However, if you’re a student or teacher at a qualified academic institution, you can get all those same programs at a greatly reduced cost (only $99!) via the Office Professional Academic offering.

Finally, if you’re purchasing Office along with a new PC, you can get an even better discount via the Product Key Card version. Key cards are disk-less versions of the Office software – instead of CDs or DVDs, you download Office from the web. The key card you purchase is just that – the product key on a card.  In this case, Home & Student is $119, Home & Business is $199 and Professional is $349.

This isn’t the only new feature to arrive in this new version of the Ribbon Hero software – it also now offers an easier setup process, too. No longer will you need to install any additional components (specifically VSTO) or use elevated, Admin privileges for the install. This is great news for corporate users who probably don’t want to have to ask I.T. to install the game for them, even if it is “work-related.” 

A third new feature is the Ribbon Hero launcher which lets you start playing the game right from the Windows Start Menu. The launcher also keeps track of your scores across all the supported apps – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and now, OneNote.

To play Ribbon Hero yourself, download it for Vista or Windows 7 or Windows XP.

The cool thing about this add-in, which installs itself as new tab on Ribbon-enabled versions of Word and PowerPoint, is that it lets you download and test watermarked images in your documents before buying. You can move them around and even crop them to see how they look.

Once you have an image you like, purchasing can be done right from within your document. Same goes for searches, buying credits, and signing in and out of your Veer account.

The Veer Images add-in is a free download available here for Windows XP, Visa, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 computers.

Host and Guest: Mike Benkovich, Senior Developer Evangelist, and John Durant, Senior Product Manager, Microsoft Corporation

Mike Benkovich delivers technical presentations around the U.S. as a developer tools evangelist on the MSDN team at Microsoft. He has worked in a variety of professional roles, including architect, project manager, developer, and technical writer. Mike is also a published author with WROX Press and APress, exploring how developers get the most from their SQL databases. Since appearing in the 1994 Microsoft DevCast, Mike has presented technical information at seminars, conferences, and corporate boardrooms across America.

Microsoft’s Future Social Experiences (FUSE) Labs worked to create this new service, which is live now. Initially, you can register to see and comment on documents but only the first group to sign up with actually get to upload.

After signing in, a process which uses Facebook’s new sign in experience – one click to authorize access – you can browse sections like “My Docs,” “Friends’ Docs” and “Add a Doc.” You’ll also see a grid on the right featuring the friends of your who have already signed up for the Docs service.

On the homepage, there are some featured docs about Docs(.com, that is) which are worth a look if you want to know more.

Based on user feedback, the hint system in Ribbon Hero has been revamped with updated wording that helps you find features faster. Hint images have been improved as well.

Finally, you can now comment on Facebook posts directly from the Ribbon Hero add-in and you’ll be notified when you earn achievements whether or not you’re logged into Facebook. There are more sound effects when this happens, too.

If you’ve never played Ribbon Hero (or challenged your friends), you can download and install the add-in now from here. It’s a lot more fun learning Office this way than having to page through some stuffy old manual, anyway. Even if you’re already comfortable with Office software, you can upgrade your skills by learning new, more advanced features with Ribbon Hero.
