Do you know you can rate videos and provide much wanted feedback? Did you know there is a channel9 toolshed site with links to all of the resources covered in the TV Shows as well as a toolshed code site? Watch this video to learn answers to these questions and many other tips and tricks to optimize your resource experience.

This clip was originally filmed as part of Episode 4 of It's All About The Tools, but it is not included in the final version. So, this is never seen before footage! Microsoft Web Technology Announcements from MIX09

During this morning’s keynote speech at the MIX09 conference, Microsoft made several announcements about updates, new releases, and enhancements to the Microsoft web technologies. Scott Guthrie came on stage to deliver a keynote speech where he talked about the new version of Silverlight 3 as well as the release of Expression Blend 3 Preview and updates to Windows Azure.

Silverlight 3

Already the download links are live for the Developer Runtime Beta of Silverlight 3, the SDK, documentation, and the Silverlight 3 Tools Beta 1 for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. And we heard the final version of Silverlight 3 should ship by year-end. In the new version of this technology, RIA developers will have more tools to work faster with new graphics, animation, and 3-D features and more than 60 new controls. There’s added support for the H.264 video format, deep linking, better SEO support, and new hardware-based graphics acceleration and animation features. Silverlight 3 will also allow developers to create lightweight web apps that can exist outside the browser, which should definitely lead to some interesting scenarios. (Like a Netflix desktop app, I can only hope).

Today, Silverlight is in use on a number of major websites including AOL, eBay, BSkyB, Netflix, CBS Sports Online, the European Commission, CareerBuilder.com, Samsung Electronics Co., and Yahoo! Japan. Microsoft, of course, has deployed the technology on 200+ products and sites like Microsoft.com, MSN, Live Search, Windows Live, Microsoft Office Online, Virtual Earth and the new Silverlight-based WorldWide Telescope application.

Microsoft’s Web Platform Installer & Gallery

Also available is a new preview release of .NET RIA Services, technology which brings the ASP.Net platform together with the Silverlight platform and the Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta, a tool that simplifies the installation and maintenance of Microsoft’s web stack as well as other free components. This release lets users download both PHP and the final release of ASP.NET MVC 1.0. It’s available on on this page alongside the final version of the 1.0 release. With the new beta, you can easily install popular open source ASP.NET and PHP web apps and other extras like the latest community version of PHP for Windows.

Along with the Web Platform Installer beta 2, there’s now a Windows Web Application Gallery available where developers can discover, explore and download applications and components that can help them build web apps. This gallery doesn’t just feature Microsoft products either – it includes links to other online resources like Acquia Drupal, DotNetNuke and WordPress. The gallery divvies up the types of apps into categories and includes both a featured app section and a “top 5” section.

Windows Azure Tools and Upgrades

Finally, Guthrie unveiled the new Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio. These extend Visual Studio’s capabilities to allow for the creation, building, debugging, running, and packaging of scalable services on Windows Azure. The Azure Tools download also includes the Windows Azure SDK.

The Windows Azure Platform itself received an upgrade, too. Today Microsoft added new capabilities including support for full trust to increase the level of flexibility for developers through support of native code, non-.NET language support via FastCGI, and geolocation which will allow developers to host data and code across two U.S.-based datacenters. The Azure team has also addressed the top customer bugs and has implemented update notifications for future releases. Customers were reminded, however, that Azure is still a CTP (Community Technology Preview) and should not yet be used on production systems.

Descry: Open Source Visualizations from MIX Online

Over on MIX Online, they’re looking into the power of information visualization as a communication tool. They call this “Project Descry.” As part of the project, they’ve released a series of open source, web-based visualizations each of which are available for download from Codeplex so designers and developers can learn from them, extend them, and contribute to the project.

The four available visualizations are as follows:

The Obesity Epidemic: this one addresses concerns about the ever growing obesity problem in the U.S. It uses Silverlight to show Tee-Shirt sizes as a way to help people visualize obesity. The Silverlight application relays statistical information via the DOM to the web page for display. Selection of the obesity rate data is done using LINQ queries on an external XML data file.
Their First Words displays incidences of word usage for a given word search of presidential inaugural addresses. This sample shows tight the integration between Silverlight and the HTML DOM, and they show search results using the advanced text rendering capabilities of the browser. A squarified TreeMap displays word search results by employing advanced LINQ queries against the inaugural data.
A Website Named Desire is an interactive infographic of the amorphous web site creation process, began as a real world poster that we wished to move onto the web. This project enhances the real world experience by enabling annotation of high resolution graphical content with markers, Canvases which scale, slide and are interactive, in a compelling and intuitive way.
The Social Timeline is an interactive visualization which allows users to download FriendFeed entries for a particular FriendFeed user, view them on a timeline and pivot on this data in several ways. This sample demonstrates some advanced control concepts such as virtualization and theming.

On a personal level as a FriendFeed user, I’m loving that last one. I can see all my friends’ posts on a timeline, filter the friend list, filter posts to only see those with likes or comments, filter by services, and more. Although it may not be the way I’ll go an read through FriendFeed every day, it’s a pretty amazing real-time visualization of my network.

Introducing Oxite: A New Content Management Platform

WordPress just got some new competition from the recently revealed MIX Labs project called Oxite. The software is an open source, standards compliant, and extensible content management platform designed to run anything from a small personal blog to a big business web site. Did we say open source? Yes, we did. The Microsoft Web Platform can support web standards, too. If you’re wondering how well it works, look no further than MIXOnline, a site currently powered by the Oxite blogging engine.

The Oxite platform supports all the blogging features you would expect including pingbacks, trackbacks, anonymous or authenticated commenting, optional comment moderation, gravatar support, RSS feeds at any page level, and support for the MetaWebLog API. That last bit means that there’s no trouble integrating Oxite with Windows Live Writer, a must-have for any serious blogger.

Oxite is also more than just a simple blogging tool – it’s a true content management system. You don’t have to create blog posts with this platform, you can instead use it to create pages and even child pages. It also easily supports multiple blogs on one site as well as the ability to keep separate sites’ data in one database.

Oxite is currently available as an alpha release and is licensed under the OSI-approved Microsoft Public License. To see how Oxite works, check out the Channel 9 video. To play with the source code and help contribute to the project, click here.

MIX 08 - The Wrap Up Video

So if you're into developing and designing cool web-sites then the annual MIX event in Las Vegas is where you want to be. MIX 08 was stellar as Guy Kawasaki and Steve Ballmer played hardball, Ray Ozzie and Scott Guthrie were part of the keynotes and everybody else partied their basheebees off. MIX isn't your typical Microsoft event as the days aren't only filled with keynotes and sessions but it adds a sprinkle of pop-culture and fun. MIX ’08: Conheça o Deep Zoom

Na semana passada durante o MIX '08, nosso evento para designers e novas tecnologias Web, anunciamos o beta do Silverlight 2.0, um plug-in que você instala no seu browser para ter funcionalidades mais ricas na Internet. Umas dessas funcionalidades que lançamos é o Deep Zoom, antigamente conhecido como Sea Dragon. O Deep Zoom permite que você "entre" nas suas imagens aproveitando todos aqueles megapixels que a sua câmera digital oferece. Para quem desenvolve para Web, recomendo ler o post (link em breve) do meu colega René de Paula explicando como usar o compositor de Deep Zoom para Silverlight. Confira o vídeo que fiz mostrando como funciona e depois dê uma navegada no site do Hard Rock Café e da empresa que criou esse site, a Vertigo. Para quem quiser testar com suas fotos, o pessoal de Windows Live disponibilizou um site para testar a tecnologia. Basta fazer o upload de suas fotos ou fornecer um feed RSS ou ATOM para puxar fotos de algum serviço.

Changing jobs: Silverlight "Principal Video Strategist"

Well, I've been a lousy blogger of late, but I've been crazy busy behind the scenes on a number of fronts.

The big news is that I've just finished by first week on Silverlight team as Principal Video Strategist. While this shifts by focus a little from being media format to technology platform centric, I'd been largely focused on Silverlight related projects for the last few months as it was.

Personally, I'm thrilled about this opportunity. I compressed my first video in the fall of 1989, and I've been working in the field full-time since 1995, so I've had a long time to think about where I've wanted the industry and the technology to go. For a long time, the biggest challenge was just delivering high quality video and audio to consumers, and that made getting the codecs and to a lesser degree format and protocols nailed. But the intersection of radically improve bandwidth (A decade ago, we still couldn't assume all users had upgraded to 56K, so we've got a LOT more bits to work with now) and big improvements in codecs (meaning we make each one of those bits count for more) means that we can deliver standard definition quality pretty easily today, with HD downloads working for a big part of the population. And while codecs will continue progressing, and will deliver us welcome improvements in compression efficiency every year. But we've reached the end of the era where big improvements in codecs are going to make a qualitative change in the consumer video experiences. It's really the systems layer which controls what the video can do that I think will be the focus of innoation over the next decade.

We are entering the era of Video on Demand, with new models of IP-delivered video making up an increasing share of video eyeball hours. The next big challenge is how to integrate our great video technologies into broader interactive environments. I've been frustrated that the VOD market, while it has continued to drive up quality dramatically, really hasn't offered interactivity much beyond what we had with VideoCD many years ago. With Silverlight, we have a great foundation to combine rich interactivity with high quality media which hasn't yet been possible in internet video.

I'm here at MIX in Las Vegas this week (I'm teaching the "Encoding Video for Microsoft Silverlight Delivery Scenarios" session at 3:00 on Wednesday), and am looking forward to a lot of great conversations about merging design, interactivity, and media.

There's a lot more news coming out about Silverlight this week, and I'll be blogging here with my take on these from a compressionist's perspective.

The Silverlight and Expression teams have long been a blast to work with, and I'm really jazzed to be formally a part of this now. We're going to be delivering some great stuff that'll delight both content creators and consumers.

And in unrelated news, I also shaved my beard.

RIA, REST and Keyboards

Josh Holmes shares his excitement for Open Space at MIX in this post. He also suggests some topics for Open Space sessions, including RIA, REST vs SOAP and common keyboard conventions.

These are all great topics, but you might ask yourself what topics are allowed in the Open Space area. That's really up to you, the attendees. The Open Space area is your chance to have a voice in the conversation and discuss whats important to you. You can suggest topics on some of the MIX sessions and themes, or discuss something totally unrelated to MIX. I even heard someone suggest Battlestar Galactica as a topic. Right on!

The great thing about the Open Space format is that the attendees get to vote with their feet. If they like your topic choice, they'll show up and stay engaged in the conversation. Otherwise, there is always the freedom to move on.

So stretch your imagination and make Open Space at MIX what you want it to be.

Follow along at the Open Space at MIX blog to get the lastest information about:

Open Space sessions being held in the Sandbox at MIX.
Updates to the schedule as attendees post sessions to the scheduling board.
Videos and blog content created by attendees during Open Space sessions.

Open Space at MIX is your chance as a MIX attendee to have a voice in the conversation. You choose the topics for the Open Space sessions and facilitate the conversation. An Open Space session can be two people or twenty people. We'll give you a video camera to record the session and we'll publish the content on this blog.

A lot of people have been asking about Open Space at MIX. The most frequently asked question is how can I submit my session before MIX starts? It is not possible to submit sessions until Tuesday at 4pm when the Sandbox opens. There are a couple reasons for this restriction. One is that the scheduling is done on site using a large scheduling board. The other reason to wait for MIX is that we want the sessions to be driven by the conversations and ideas that you get at MIX. If the schedule filled up before the event even started, you wouldn't have that opportunity.

So how can you let people know about your Open Space session before the event? Write about it in your blog and we'll link to you from the Open Space blog. You can describe your session and the day/time you'll schedule it during the event. However, ask your readers to check back to your blog or the Open Space at MIX blog for updates because you can't gaurantee the time of your session.

I finally noticed that my session from Mix '07 is online - Design in Motion: Video Production Workflow. It includes a full streaming version of the presentation (the PowerPoint/Demos, not me) with my mic feed. I'll warn you - we had an excellent party at Pure the night before so my voice was pretty ragged.

You can also download the .pptx of the presentation, and downloable files (including for Zune and iPod).

It's cool stuff. If anyone's on Mac and can't open a .pptx, let me know and I'll send you a different version.

MIX '07 - The future of Comic Book Reading.

IdentityMine’s mission is to help their customers visualize their software’s potential and build something remarkable. Check out this demonstration of the comic reading experience using the Microsoft Expression suite of design tools. Just as the NY Times Reader project dramatically improves the newspaper reading experience, their Windows Presentation Foundation-based approach to comic reading does the same thing for traditional print-based comic books. You'll also notice that I look alot like Channel 9's Rory Blyth in this clip, it's uncanny.

MIX07 Silverlight demos show off tomorrow's web

The Microsoft MIX conference is in full swing in a little city in Nevada right now, and our sister site Visit MIX07 has been Joshua Allen’s soapbox to bring the show beyond Vegas. The technological marvel of the show has been Silverlight. The CBS Digital Media group has built an application for media consumption that could aptly be described as FutureTV. Moving through user-generated content that includes rich metadata is a seamless viewing experience, even with targeted advertising integrated. The kids here have worked long and hard to provide incredible and futuristic online experiences. The Netflix video-on-demand player was combines your online experience with movie-viewing in a way that is simply amazing. Even Major League Baseball has got into the business in an attempt to provide baseball fans with an aggressive online experience. The way in which MLB.com shows off live games has changed drastically since they started in 2002 thanks to Microsoft. The new Silverlight MLB site player provides the smoothest presentation of baseball’s ocean of statistics and multiple simultaneous sporting events anywhere.
