Anand Iyer - Life in the Field, Racism in the Tech Industry, and More...

Anand Iyer is an old friend of mine. We met on
the MSDN Events team.

We did not, however work together all that much. The MSDN Events team is distributed, with different employees living in different states.

When I was still there, I was living in Portland and being managed by a guy who lives in Kentucky who reported to a guy who lives in Texas who reported to a guy who lived in Redmond.

Yeah. It was pretty crazy.

The job itself was nuts, too, and Anand and I spent most of this video just talking about life as MSDN Events Presenters - having to fly around, constantly wake up in different time zones, get used to adjusting your watch, presenting in cities that were so
high up that there wasn't even any stinkin' oxygen, and so on.

This video, then, is a conversation between Anand and me. We talk about many things, but, mostly, we're just happy to see each other. It was the first time in months, and it's obvious. I missed him very much - he's a good guy and a fabulous presenter.

Finally, this video covers a lot of ground, but one thing we cover that is especially important is racism in the tech industry. Anand was born in Bombay, and he's taken a lot of flak for his heritage. I remember how this resulted in some reprehensible
situations.

I wanted everybdy to know that the racism in the tech industry - and there is
much more than anybody's willing to own up to - actually affects people. I thought that, if you all saw first hand that it hits people like Anand, then maybe you'd think a little deeper about what it is you're upset about.

That's all.

IT Heroes Episode XIII: Microsoft and the SBA after Katrina

Microsoft and the Small Business Administration Gulf States Initiative

In the wake of the Katrina disaster thousands of small businesses were decimated in the affected Gulf States. The Small Business Administration wanted to reach out to those businesses and make it possible for them to apply for, bid on and compete for Federal
contracts. Logistically, this is normally done through online registration, but, as we know, much of the Gulf was off line after the hurricane.

In this interview we speak to David Loines of the SBA and Mike Voorhees, representing Microsoft, about the Gulf States Initiative, a program that leveraged Microsoft mobile assets to assist the SBA in getting to the folks who needed their help.

IT Heroes: Stories from the Trenches; these are the real stories of men and women in IT making a difference everyday. We talk with authors, innovators and implementers about emerging technologies, troubleshooting and remediation of common infrastructure
issues and charitable contributions in the community. We seek to educate and provide a forum for open discussion of the many uses for and specific ways in which people are everyday exploiting technology to create opportunities for themselves and others.

During his trip to several European developer events last November, Ken Levy stops by the Microsoft offices in Zurich Switzerland and goes to lunch with Simone Stocker and Corina Erny-Boehi. During lunch, the topic of Channel 9 is brought up and Ken learns
