VBA interop with VSTO managed code in VS 2008

Introduction: With VSTO v3.0 the attraction to write managed code in order to customise Office applications is huge. However, if you already have investments in VBA code, you do not need to throw it out just yet. Just interop, like I show in
this 8' video. For other resources, start at my
blog post here.

Something end users probably don't realize is that Office isn't just a suite of applications, but also a platform for development.
The idea behind building apps on top of Office is that you can provide users with apps in an environment with which they're already familiar and comfortable. Some of the plumbing is also already taken care of for devs, so you can rely on the strength of the
platform rather than start entirely from scratch to build your apps.
To help devs get started, there are some reference apps that have been released.
Today, they're pushing out a reference app to show how OBAs can be used in the medical industry.

Office SharePoint Server at Microsoft: 12TB and counting

Scott St. Jean is a program manager in Microsoft IT. He makes sure that the largest SharePoint installation in the world keeps working. Mark Swenson is also a program manager in Microsoft IT. His job is making sure that our intranet search is working,
including things like making sure people can't find documents that they shouldn't have rights to.

I sat down with them to talk about what it takes to migrate, and index, and upgrade 12 terabytes of data to the latest version. If that wasn’t challenging enough, they started working with the products before they were the latest version, when they were still
under development. Their experience shook out a lot of bugs that were addressed before the real world had to deal with them.

In addition to deployment and migration, we chatted about the backup and restore procedures for this multiple terabyte installation, and what happens when you tell everyone in the org to go ahead and create their own SharePoint sites. (in an outtake that I,
um, took out, I asked the guys for their picks for the SuperBowl, and got one of the team names wrong. minus 100 cool points for me)

Showing and hiding the Office ribbon

I'm enjoying the new Office ribbon but I'm also a fan of clutter-free interfaces, so I wondered how to use the ribbon selectively. This short
screencast illustrates two ways to do that.

You can use Control-F1 to minimize the ribbon, and Control-F1 again to restore it.

There's also a subtler technique I like even better. If you double-click a menu item, you'll enter a mode in which single-clicking will hide or show the ribbon. When shown in this mode, the ribbon floats on top of your document.

These methods work hand in hand with Office 2007's contextual toolbars. If you want to highlight some text, for example, you can summon the basic formatting toolbar by just sweeping out a selection.

For me, at least, this is the best of both worlds. I can use the ribbon to more easily discover and access the more advanced features of Office when I need them. But when I'm doing basic stuff, I can work in the minimalistic way I prefer. And it's quick
and easy to switch between these two modes, using the mouse or the keyboard.
