Soundtracker Builds Global Geosocial Music Service on Multiple Platforms including Windows Azure and Windows Phone 7

Daniele Calabrese, founder and CEO of Soundtracker, a Microsoft BizSpark One company, discusses with Zhiming Xue the enabling technologies behind their geosocial music service Soundtracker. The free global geosocial internet radio service, which currently supports smartphone and web users with 12 million songs in 10 languages, helps users discover, share and play in real-time their favorite music with friends and anybody nearby. With demos on a Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone, Daniele discusses their mobile-first strategy that focuses on smartphone users, their support for multiple mobile platforms including Windows Phone 7, and several key location aware and social music sharing capabilities of the service. He then explains the high-level architecture for the music service - how Amazon AWS is used to support the infrastructure and Microsoft Windows Azure powers the instant and predictive search function, and how data is managed in the backend and delivered to users. He talks about how HTML5 is used to provide optimized user experience to web users with Microsoft IE 9 and Google Chrome. Finally, Daniele shares their plan to extend the global music service to Windows 8 and XBOX Live users. You can follow Soundtracker at facebook and twitter.

Silverlight for Symbian Now Available

Silverlight technology is now available for Symbian devices by way of a new download from Nokia’s OVI store. The latest release works on S60 5th edition phones, a lineup which includes the Nokia XpressMusic, N97 and N97 Mini, which are used by 20+ million users worldwide.

The Silverlight technology brings the following features to these Nokia users (according to the Team blog post):

Media: Hardware assisted Media playback of H.264 content. This gives a great media viewing experience using full hardware decode and hardware post processing.
IIS Smooth Streaming: Enables users to access live and on demand media content streamed using IIS Smooth Streaming including multiple bit rate switching.
Rich UI: Developers get access to the Silverlight V2 surface area to create Rich Interactive Web Applications.
.NET Programmability: .NET Compact Framework class libraries and runtime.

But as an end user, you may want to know what exactly you can do with Silverlight on your Nokia phone. Well for starters, there’s a handy Bing app featuring News, Entertainment, Video, Sports, Weather, Money and Stocks info. There’s also an HSN app which lets you watch the Home Shopping network Live, On Demand while also providing quick access to the “deal of the day” and more.

Developers interested in building their own apps should check out the developer tools and device runtime.

Microsoft Communicator Mobile for Nokia

Microsoft and Nokia have just announced a new software collaboration called Microsoft Communicator Mobile for Nokia. The software lets Nokia phone owners see their colleagues’ availability and can click to call them, email them or start an instant messaging session. The contacts’ names and their current statuses are available in the device’s contacts application, too.

The application is currently available for both Nokia E52 and E72 model phones and can be downloaded now from the Ovi Store.

Later this year, the companies plan to further solidify their partnership with the launch of Microsoft Office applications for Nokia.

Windows Live Messenger Arrives on Nokia Phones

The Windows Live Messenger service is now available through Nokia’s “Messaging Chat” application, software that comes pre-installed on select Nokia phones. Within this application, you can chat with friends, maintain buddy lists, update your status message, and even have multiple conversations at once in tabbed chat windows. With the newly integrated Live Messenger service, Messaging Chat users can also make phone calls directly from the buddy list, receive notifications while the app is running in the background, and set your status to “offline” for privacy purposes. Other desktop-like features like emoticons and grouped contacts are available, too.

The first device to feature the new software is the Nokia E72. Meanwhile, Nokia E71, E75, and E63 users can download the “Nokia Messaging for IM” application from the company’s app store called the Ovi Store. Here’s the direct link for the download.

Silverlight Showing Up on Nokia Handsets Soon

In one of the first of many newsbombs coming out of everyone's favorite desert oasis this week, the Silverlight team will announcing the porting of Silverlight to Nokia Series 60 mobile devices. Given that the Finnish juggernaut represents a majority of the smartphone market, support for Silverlight on Nokias (in addition to the previously-announced WinMo device support) will help bring the next web to the pockets of the masses.

The new video for "Oceans" from the "Fresh Wine for the Horses" album by former Catherine Wheel lead singer Rob Dickinson is shot completely on a Nokia N93 camera phone. It's unbelievable how great it looks! The video is directed by Mike Hodgkinson who I spoke to on the phone- as he filmed his end of the interview on the same Nokia n93 camera phone.
