The video discusses key concepts to keep in mind when developing with the SDK and rounds out the discussion with a demo that uses the SDK to pull data out of an Excel workbook and generate Word performance appraisal documents for employees.

SharePoint Easy Setup Script is a new tool released by Chris Johnson and Paul Stubbs to help you set up a SharePoint 2010 developer machine without requiring Hyper-V. The Easy Setup script will set up the machine, either as a native install or on a bootable VHD file. In order to make this process as easy as possible, we have created a series of PowerShell scripts that automate the entire process of building a fully running and ready-to-go SharePoint 2010 environment. The scripts are highly configurable, but out of the box they will download all of the required software and install all of the SharePoint prerequisites as well as other software such as Visual Studio and Office.
In this episode, you’ll see how three very creative people use Microsoft Office to realize their ideas. Joannie Stangeland uses OneNote 2010 and a digital pen to capture inspiration and organize her poetry. David Salaguinto uses a Visio template to create
comics for his popular “Office Comic.” And we’ll show you how acclaimed author Jennifer Egan uses PowerPoint to create fiction. She actually wrote a chapter entirely in PowerPoint for her novel “A Visit from the Goon Squad.”

The Office Show: Microsoft Word

Do you often work with really long Word documents? Do you sometimes collaborate with others on the creation of these really long documents? Check out the latest episode of the Office Show for a quick tour of some of the new features in Microsoft Word 2010
that could make your life just a little bit easier.

We’ll show you the new Navigation Pane in Word. It makes it easy to find your way around long, complicated documents.

If you’re upgrading from Word 2003, the new fluent user interface will be new to you. Menus and toolbars have been replaced by the ribbon. The ribbon was introduced with Word 2007, and it’s made doing things like applying styles really easy.

You are using styles in Word aren’t you? No? Well, we’ll not only show you how to apply styles, we’ll show you how to create your own custom styles.

Collaborating on documents in Word has been made easy with the new coauthoring feature. We’ll show you how you can work with others in the same document without the worry of multiple versions sprouting up in email.

Yes, all this and a gratuitous reference to pirates and parrots!

Co-Authoring Using Office 2010

In the newly launched
Office 2010 software and its online counterpart,
Office Web Apps, there’s a feature called “co-authoring” which lets multiple people edit the same file at the same time.

In the Excel Web App, for example, multiple users can open a workbook from either Windows Live SkyDrive or SharePoint 2010 and make changes that appear in near real-time, allowing you to see each other’s edits as you work. And as people make changes, the
charts, conditional formatting, Sparklines and other data-driven functions will update as well.

To see who else is editing a file in Excel, you’ll notice a pop-up in the status bar (bottom-right) which shows you who is editing along with you.

The OneNote Web App also allows for co-authoring of the same shared notebook with others who have opened the file as a Web App, or, in this case, even those who are using the desktop software OneNote 2010 and its “shared notebooks” feature. Again, changes
sync in near real-time, just as with Excel.

You can also see who has made what edits specifically by clicking “Show Authors” on the Ribbon’s “View” tab. From this tab, you can see previous versions of a page by clicking “Page Versions.” You can restore or delete previous versions, too, if desired.

Right now, co-authoring is supported in the Word, PowerPoint and (via shared notebooks) the OneNote desktop applications when a file is opened from SkyDrive or SharePoint 2010. Co-authoring will arrive for all Web Apps by the second half of this year.

Even Copy & Paste Gets a Revamp in Office 2010

Is it possible to improve upon something as simple as Copy & Paste? Apparently so. In the newest version of Microsoft Office, the paste function includes an all-new feature: Live Preview Paste.

Although among the most used actions when creating a document, paste is the most frequently undone action, the Office team discovered based on usage data they analyzed. Why is that? Because pasted content does not always functioned as expected, usually due to formatting issues.

This means users either have to go back and reformat after a paste or undo the paste and then paste again, selecting the appropriate setting (thinned format, remove formatting, etc.) beforehand. These settings are available through the “Paste Special” feature, of course, but a lot of casual Office users don’t realize that feature exists.

Now, in Office 2010, Paste Special is giving way to Live Paste Previews. In the “Paste Options Gallery” (a menu of choices that appears when pasting), you can hover over an item being pasted and preview the paste’s formatting using the actual content being pasted.

The options displayed in the Paste Options Gallery are contextual – meaning they change based on what you’ve copied and where that content is being pasted. So for example, if you’re pasting in Excel, you might see options revealing different cell formatting, but in Word you might see options to paste with or without hyperlinks or as plain text.

And if you prefer pasting using keyboard shortcuts, you can still access the new Paste Options too. After hitting Ctrl + V to paste, just press Ctrl one more time to bring up the options.

What are Sparklines and How Do I Use Them?

With the launch of Office 2010, there are a number of new features found in the popular productivity programs, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote and others. From a now fully-customizable ribbon interface that extends across all programs to a whole new way to copy-and-paste (preview before you paste!), the new suite doesn’t just contain a few tweaks, it’s a big upgrade.

Some of the new features, though, may introduce new words into an casual Office user’s vocabulary. In this post, we’ll look at one new feature in particular: Sparklines.

So what are Sparklines? While Sparklines have been around for a while via add-in programs from third parties, they haven’t been available natively in Excel until now. In short, Sparklines are a feature in Excel 2010 that let you create small charts within a single cell, allowing you to quickly discover new patterns in your data. But unlike traditional charts, Sparklines are meant to be embedded into what they’re describing – in the very same table.

For example, if you want to track the fluctuations in your sales figures, you can add Sparklines next to your raw numbers. See this graph, below, that tracks a store’s sales:

In this graph, the Sparklines chart lets you see how the sales data has changed over time. The Sparklines don’t live in a separate column or sheet, they’re right there, right next to the data they describe. And they don’t have to be in this same format, either – they can either be lines, columns or even win/loss records.

Using Sparklines is really easy, too, even for the novice Excel user. You just select the cell where you want the Sparklines to appear then choose the Sparkline type from the “Insert” ribbon. Finally, you select the cells containing the data you want graphed (or manually enter the coordinates). If you’ve ever used a simple Excel formula before (like “Sum,” for example), the process will be familiar to you and just as simple.

Sparklines are just one of the many new Office 2010 features that make the upgrade worthwhile, we’ll look at others in more detail in future posts.
