Sells, Laverty and Flasko: Entity Framework 4, oData and PDC10

Chris Sells takes us on a small tour (two offices and a few hallways) in one of the Data Framework and Modeling Group's buildings (interesting - the same building the C9 team launched C9 from 6+ years ago: Building 18). The goal here is to get a sense of what's new in Entity Framework 4 and oData. We do this the old fashioned way: impromptu conversation with some members of the teams who make this stuff. Chris is a great MC and I suspect you will be happy with what you learn and who you meet here.

Code-First in EF4 is very cool -> you build your DB and data model in code...first. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. We begin the journey in a small office that Chris does not work in. Then we drop by Tim Laverty's office to talk turkey about EF4 and Code First. Then, we amble over to Mike Flasko's office to interrogate him on oData (what's the big deal, anyway - what is it, exactly, is it open or closed? Etc.., etc...)

Silverlight TV 50: The State of Silverlight with Scott Guthrie

John sits down with Scott Guthrie, Corporate VP at Microsoft, to discuss the state of Silverlight. Scott discusses the impact of Silverlight in applications including Windows Phone 7, the history of releases, and what his favorite features are with Silverlight and Windows Phone 7. Scott talks about how Windows Phone and Silverlight together focus on optimizations such as using the GPU and using the off thread capabilities and he gives some advice for building applications with Silverlight and Windows Phone. You can catch more of Scott at PDC on Oct 28/29 and also at the keynote of the Silverlight Firestarter on Dec 2.

PDC10 and the new Online Experience

PDC10 is fast approaching, and if you’ve been paying attention, you know that things are different this year. While you might know that for the first time we will be holding it at our own conference facility on the Microsoft Campus, and you might also know that we sold out early due to the smaller size of the venue. What you may not realize however, is that we’ve been working hard to make the online experience as exciting as possible.

For this episode, I’ve invited Eric Schmidt to talk to us about the brand new “viewer” he’s been working on for PDC10 which is being specifically designed to make sure those developers who couldn’t attend in person, will still be able to get a lot of value from the material being presented. Like always, we’ll be streaming the Keynote live, but we will also be streaming all of the in-person seminars live as well! We will also be preparing a great collection of pre-recorded seminars specifically for the PDC, and all of those sessions will be available online as soon as the PDC starts. Our media player is being built with the specific needs of our online audience in mind, with some very exciting features and capabilities.

Oh, and don't be concerned about Eric's mention of the PDC starting on Oct 29th near the end of this episode... he hadn't had his morning coffee yet, and really intended to say "Oct 28th".

Countdown to PDC: Tips for Exploring Seattle

If you’re one of the lucky people who registered early and will attend the PDC in Redmond, we hope you’ll
have a chance to venture out beyond the Microsoft campus. Last week, Jeannine shared her tips on things to see in Redmond and the Eastside. This week,Amy (Event Marketing Owner, and@PDCEvent tweeter) represents for the Westsiiiiiide! Watch this week’s show to get Amy’s picks for exploring Seattle.

In 2007, a nine-acre industrial site along Seattle’s Elliott Bay was transformed into theOlympic
Sculpture Park. This is one of my favorite places to chill in Seattle. In addition to the people-friendlypark
and sculpture art, there are unobstructed views of the ferries, cruise and cargo ships coming and going in Puget Sound. Getmore information on hours of operation and what’s currently on view at the Park.
The Burke-Gilman / Sammamish River Regional Trail System (RTS) is a paved, urban trail used by cyclists and runners that follows a historic railroad route through the city of Seattle to Redmond and places beyond. In total, the BG + SR trail spans approximately 30 miles (view the map by choosing the trail names on the right). The entire trail is great, but the areas along the shores of Lake Washington andGas Works Park are my favorite. You can join the trail at Marymoor Park, less than 1 mile from the Microsoft campus.
If you like live music (indie, hip-hop, punk, rockabilly…) or film (festival, foreign, independent, limited release…) you’ve come to the right city! Seattle is full of music venues and typically gets early release on films, too. VisitThe Stranger, for music, film and performance show times and reviews. KEXP also has a goodclub calendar with music recommendations.
Although the eastside certainly has some good, upscale restaurants (Café Juanita,El Gaucho,John Howie Steak…), Seattle is where the real foodie action is! Visit theSeattle Met site to search for restaurants andreviews. Recently, I’ve enjoyed meals at Mistral Kitchen, Tavolata andBastille. Pike Street Fish Fry is on my list to try.

A little bit of Seattle trivia.

The longest floating bridge on earth (7,578 ft / 2,310 m) is the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge (SR 520), connecting Redmond with Seattle. This may be your last chance to drive it for free –tolling and
construction of a replacement bridge is set to being in Spring of 2011. Oh yeah, and you can see the Gates’ residence from the eastbound direction.
Seattle frequently tops the ranking lists as the #1 most literate city in the U.S. That must be why we have the “Koolest” public library (designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Ramus). Learn more about the downtown Seattle Public Library.
