Visual C++ turned 20 this month! It certainly has come a long way. How did it begin? What were the goals way back when? Fortunately for us, one of the original team members VC++ team members, Jan Gray, set up a reunion of former and current employees who worked on the first visual IDE for C++ from Microsoft. During one of the related gatherings, Jan and fellow original VC++ alum, Rico Mariani, joined us for a casual chat about the early days of VC++. This conversation is full of goodness and a few surprises. Congratulations to the VC++ team and to all who shaped and continue to shape the product, from VC++ 1.0 to VC++11 - and that includes you, too!

It's no coincidence that as VC++ turned 20, Ale turned 40, and Channel 9 turned 9. Or is it? What's the hidden meaning in the sequence 20 40 9? Certainly something special! Happy birthday to all!!! And a big thank you to all of you who use Visual C++.

Rico Mariani: Inside Visual Studio Beta 2 - Performance and Reliability

I caught up with the great Rico Mariani, Visual Studio's Chief Software Architect, after his keynote at a VS partner conference held on the Microsoft campus. He tells us all about the improvements in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. Rico and team have taken the performance and reliability of Visual Studio to new levels in this release. Gone are the days of synchronous assembly and COM component reference look-ups (woo hoo!!!). Gone are the long start up times. Gone are roughly 90% of the performance bottlenecks that slowed down the development experience inside the VS2010 Beta 1 IDE. The Visual Studio development team worked their tails off to improve perf and reliability across the board. Tune in to learn about what they did and what they will do prior to RTM. Truly excellent engineering goes on in building 42. Well done, team!

Rico also discusses his final blog post in his VS history series, a 5,000 word up to the minute historical piece. After watching Tina's great VS documentary series, Rico decided to add his own perspective in a 10 part blog post blitz. Great stuff!

I will be interviewing the great Rico Mariani this Thursday (November 20, 2008). The base topics of the conversation will be:

1) Rico's new role as Chief Architect of Visual Studio
2) Digging into the technical roadmap of Visual Studio

You've requested several times that you want more involvement with the conversational composition of C9 interviews. Well, here's your chance. What I would ask is that you read Rico's latest blog post where he outlines the VS roadmap beginning with VS2010. That way, you can create some questions that arise directly from the thinking he expresses in his blog post. This will help keep the conversation very focused and relevant. Of course, feel free to ask some burning questions about VS futures, but know that I will not ask all of your questions because there will not be enough time.

CLR Team Tour, Part II - The Future of Languages (PDC panel preview)

With this second segment of our CLR Team pre-PDC tour we start out with Rico Mariani where we talk again about .NET performance and how to wring the most out of your .NET code.

Then we head off to meet a group of architects on the .NET team where they hint at the future of languages.

Brad Abrams is seen (this part starts at 11:55). Jim Miller, architect on the team joins Rico and Brad (and later Jason Zander, product unit manager) to talk about what they'll talk about at the PDC. These guys are among the smartest people at Microsoft, so this will be an interesting panel.

At about 27:30 Joe Duffy, our host, takes us to another group of people where we talk about dynamic languages in another preview of another PDC panel discussion. "Are we all going to switch to Ruby?" That's my question, which gets the discussion rocking and rolling. You also meet Erik Meijer, architect on SQL Server services (he's the language pimper).
