It's been way too long since Dare Obasanjo (of RSS Bandit and Carnage4Life fame) has appeared on C9. The last time was several years ago in an interview conducted by me and Scoble on a summer day outside of building 35 on the main MS campus in Redmond. What's Dare been up to since we last spoke? Turns out, quite a bit Dare works on the Live SDK team. They recently shipped the SkyDrive API. If you're not familiar with SkyDrive, it's a cloud-based personal file storage service, allowing users access to any file, anytime, anywhere... (we talk about what exactly that means and how it works in this conversation).

Here we catch up and geek out a bit on SkyDrive (from a developer and consumer's perspective, with an emphasis on the former, of course), web programming, personal file storage solutions (how do you design a SkyDrive?), the difference between SkyDrive and traditional (local) storage solutions, when to use SkyDrive verus Azure storage, and of course the SkyDrive API.

SkyDrive Adds New Silverlight-Enabled Features

The Windows Live SkyDrive team is putting Microsoft Silverlight to work on the cloud-based photo and file hosting service. Now using Silverlight, you can arrange your photos within your photo albums the way you want them just by dragging and dropping them into place. To access this new feature, click on “Sort by” and then “Arrange Photos.” This is especially handy for when you want to put a particular album in chronological order without have to edit the file names or dates to get it right.

Another update to SkyDrive involves keeping your favorites in sync between computers. Starting now, the next time you visit your favorites on Windows Live, they’ll all be automatically moved over to the SkyDrive service instead: http://favorites.live.com.

The third update isn’t out yet, but is said to be “coming soon,” but it looks to be pretty cool, too. It involves being able to see which photos your friends are tagged in by selecting “Photos of ” from the menu under their profile picture. I hate teases, but the team says we’ll see this in a few days, so I guess that’s OK.

I twittered the other day about SkyDrive and was surprised that some people didn’t know that you could get free 25 GB of storage for files and photos with this great service accessible from any web browser. The only thing people really wanted was more Windows Explorer integration. Can this be done with a search connector in Windows 7? If you know the answer to that, leave a comment!

Accessing SkyDrive From Windows Live Messenger

In previous versions of Messenger, you may remember a feature called Sharing Folders which let you share files, including photos and videos, with any of your Messenger contacts. Of course, as you may have expected, most people used Sharing Folders to share files during a conversation. That worked well if both parties happened to be online at the same time, but if one was offline, there wasn’t an easy way to send them the files you wanted to share. That’s why, in the new version of Windows Live Messenger, there are now two ways to share files.

If you’re having a conversation with someone, you can go to the Files menu and choose “Send a file or photo.” However, if you would rather make file available online for them to download from SkyDrive (and perhaps make it available to several others at the same time too, even if they are not online), you can go to Files –> Publish Files online from your conversation window.

If you choose that option, you’ll be taken to your SkyDrive on Windows Live where you can upload your file(s) and choose the people you are sharing the files with.

Even if you’re not in a conversation, you can quickly access your SkyDrive from Windows Live Messenger from the “Actions” menu. Just click “View your online files” to be directed to your SkyDrive homepage.

Using SkyDrive with Live Messenger is a great way to share both individual files, photos, or entire photo galleries with your friends and family when you’re chatting online. You can even share files publicly with your whole Windows Live network or the world by sharing them on SkyDrive and choosing those options from the drop-down box. Your shared files will then get posted to everyone’s What’s New feed. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

Gladinet Now Offers SkyDrive 25 GB Support

Remember when we told you about Gladinet, the software that lets you mount your SkyDrive as a virtual drive in Windows? Well, shortly after that post went live, the new version of Windows Live launched, and with it came the new and improved 25 GB SkyDrive. Although that storage increase was awesome, it unfortunately broke the Gladinet software. But now they have corrected that. The latest version of Gladinet (build 47) was just released with support for the new SkyDrive. However, they note that although the functionality is back, it’s not done yet. There are still some kinks to work out. For example, public folders and shared folders are showing as empty – they expect to have that fixed within the week along with a few other issues. If you’re dying to get your SkyDrive desktop app working again, you can grab the latest version from their homepage. Otherwise, you might want to wait a week until build 48 is ready.

How To Easily Add Lots of Photos to Windows Live Photos

Now that you’ve had time to check out the new Windows Live, you’re probably ready to start adding content. One of the things you’ll probably want to do is add photos. You may already have your photos stored on the web somewhere, but it never hurts to have them in more than one place – you know, for backup purposes. But before they made it to the web, the photos were probably first copied from your camera over to your computer. If you’re like me, you may have all your photos organized on your computer in folders, maybe even in folders by date.

What I found to be the easiest way to get my nice organized folders from my PC into Windows Live Photos was to use Windows Live Photo Gallery. This desktop software program (available from download.live.com), is a part of the new Windows Live Betas, a set of desktop tools that integrate with the online version of Windows Live.

STEPS

1) From within Windows Live Photo Gallery, I simply navigated to the folder which contained the photos I wanted to publish using the explorer-like navigation bar in the right sidebar.

2) Then I selected all the photos using my favorite keyboard shortcut for “Select All” – Ctrl + A. (You can also go to File –> Select All from the menus at the top.)

3) I right-clicked on the photos I selected and chose the option “Publish on Windows Live Spaces” from the menu that appeared. That should probably say “Photos” now, but whatever, it works.

4) After you do that, a window will appear where you can fill in the new album title for your selected photos. Take note of the drop-down box underneath as it’s here where you can set permissions. By default, the permissions are set to be “Same As Space,” meaning whatever you configured in Windows Live Spaces will be the permission setting applied to the photos unless you specify otherwise. If you’re not sure, or you just want to be certain the correct permissions are applied, you can click on the drop-down box and select either “Permission: Public” (viewable by everyone) or “Permission: Just You (viewable by ONLY you).

5) Finally, just click “OK” and the photos are uploaded into Windows Live Photos. Despite the wordiness of my instructions here, the whole process is actually very fast – you can upload tons of albums in minutes.

For anyone with a lot of photos, this is definitely the way to go instead of using the built-in photo uploader in Windows Live Spaces which requires you to browse and select each individual photo you want to add one-by-one.

The New Windows Live Has Arrived

We know you’ve been waiting for this moment – today the new Windows Live has arrived! With today’s launch, you’re going to see a whole set of new products and services like Windows Live Groups, Photos, and Profile. Plus, some of the services that have been around before are now getting upgraded like Windows Live Home, Spaces, Events, and SkyDrive. Here’s what has changed:

UPGRADED

Windows Live Spaces

As a part of the updates coming to the new Windows Live, Windows Live Spaces is also getting a refresh. The new version has an improved UI that aims for a cleaner look and feel. This is being accomplished, most importantly, by the removal of the horizontal ad from the top of your space (hooray!). The page header is simpler, too, featuring less text than the other pages on Windows Live.

On the new Windows Live Spaces, you’ll also have more granular control over your Space. With the revamp, all the modules are optional – even the Title and Tagline. The titles of all the various modules are able to be removed or renamed at any time. You can change the themes, fonts, colors, and background images of your Space via the customize menu and you can select which photo albums display on your page. You can even customize what parts of the photos interface to display.

Other tweaks to Spaces include a newer, more readable font size and default font (Segoe UI). Here’s a look at the before and after:

For photo bloggers, the new Live Spaces will be a better fit as it now supports inserting of images inline from all browsers and you won’t need the upload tool to do so. However, if you do choose to use the tool, you’ll be able to drag-and-drop the images into your blog from your computer or even from the new online Windows Live Photos service. Even better, there’s a new “photo preview” feature available which will pop up a preview of the original size image.

Windows Live SkyDrive

For Windows Live SkyDrive, today’s launch means you’ll finally have your storage space upgraded from a healthy 5 GB to an unheard-of 25 GB of free storage. In addition, SkyDrive has added the following:

Gorgeous online slide show for your photos

What’s more exciting though, is that the new SkyDrive now allows you to copy and move files and folders around on your drive instead of having to delete and re-upload them. For organizing your online files, this is a huge improvement since it makes your SkyDrive function more like a drive on your PC.

You’ll notice some other changes upon login to the new SkyDrive too, like the “What’s New” stream that focuses on new additions to SkyDrives across your network of friends, including recently added Photos, which are found in the new service Windows Live Photos, a service powered by SkyDrive. When browsing your SkyDrive, you’ll find your photos are now there as well.

Windows Live Events

With the new Windows Live Events, you’ll notice of course, the new UI, which was based on user feedback. The site now also include new themes and it’s now easier to share photos with anyone invited to your event.

NEW

Windows Live Profile

Your new Windows Live Profile is the place where you can share information about yourself that you want broadcasted to your friends. Here, you can customize the services that pipe into the “What’s New” list. To do so, you can link your Windows Live profile to your accounts across the social web to be included into your personal activity stream, which is then included on your friends’ homepages similar to Facebook’s News Feed. Web activities you can add include your blog (or any site that supports standard RSS), iLike, Twitter, a WordPress blog, Yelp, Flickr, LinkedIn, Pandora, Photobucket, and more. Of course, you can also add or remove activities that take place across the Windows Live network.

Windows Live Photos

The new Windows Live Photos service is powered by SkyDrive, which means you now have 25 GB of free online storage for your photos (and files). This service lets you upload photos directly from your computer and create and manage online galleries of photos.

The online service mirrors some of the functions of the Windows Live Photo Gallery desktop software – for example, you can tag people in your photos, tag yourself, or rename the photo's title. However, the online gallery also provides new features like the ability to add comments to the photos or copy an embed code for posting your photos elsewhere on the web. There’s a photo URL provided, too, if you just want to link to the photo itself.

Through Live Photos’ privacy controls, you can specify who, if anyone, has access to your photos and what they can do – view, edit, delete, download, etc.

One of the best features in the new service is definitely the photo slideshow, which you can launch at anytime from the “More” menu. The slideshow is easy to click through with its navigation buttons at the bottom or you can let it auto-play. When you're finished viewing the images, you can easily return to your photo gallery either by clicking the link provided or just hitting “escape.”

Windows Live Groups

Windows Live Groups is another new service which makes it easier for groups to collaborate online. Groups are run by owners who can then add and remove members and each group gets its own online profile.

All Groups come with a calendar, SkyDrive folders, and a photo gallery. There are also discussion boards for Group communication. The pages can be customized using themes, too.

Another nice feature of Groups is its integration with Windows Live Messenger. Groups with up to 20 members can have group conversations using Live Messenger’s IM software. This service is turned on by default and if you shut it off, you aren’t able to turn it back on again, so you may as well leave it alone unless it’s important that your group members NOT see each other’s email address, which they can in WLM.

Windows Live People Pages

Windows Live People Pages are the central address books that contains all of the people that are in your Windows Live network including their Hotmail contacts, Messenger buddies, Spaces friends, and Groups.

Here, you can search your address book, star your favorites, add and remove contacts, and more. There’s also a quick link to send an email right from within the address book itself.

Windows Live Homepage

The new Windows Live Homepage is the central hub where all the Live Services are tied together. It’s the place where you can be notified of new Windows Live Hotmail email and where you can track updates on recent online activity by people in your Windows Live network. Similar to Facebook’s News Feed, the “What’s New Feed,” shows you what your friends and family have shared on Windows Live as well as on other 3^rd party services.

There are also shortcuts to perform frequently used actions on other Live services. For example, with one click you can create a new create, add a contact, create a new photo album, write a blog post, and more.

You can customize the profile pics that display at the top right of your homepage. Add more than two photos, and the photos will slowly scroll to display the others every few seconds. You can also have the local weather show on the top left, skin the page with one of several themes and configure the page layout as well as other options.

The Real Deal With Windows Live Storage

As the new Windows Live prepares to launch, let’s review what’s really being offered here in terms of cloud storage. With the new Windows Live offering, storage space isn’t isolated within each individual service. Instead, you’ll get 25 GB of free online storage that will span across both Windows Live Photos and Windows Live SkyDrive combined. That space is shared by both services for storing your files and photos in the cloud. The only storage that is separate is that which comes with Windows Live Hotmail. With Hotmail, storage begins at 5 GB when you sign up for a new account and then grows a little each month as you reach the limit. What that means is that, right off the bat, a new user to Windows Live gets 30 total GB of free storage when they sign up.

Now if you combine that storage provided by Windows Live with that of Live Mesh, you can grab 5 more gigs of free online storage. Although there’s no limit to the size of files that can be synced via peer-to-peer between computers and mobile devices, the Live Mesh Desktop – an online access point for getting to your files - only provides 5 GB of online storage (for now, that is).

If you’re going to use both services, you may want to come up with a strategy as to where you’re keeping your data – which service holds what? Given the combined 35 GB between Windows Live and Live Mesh, you can practically use these services as an alternative to backing up your computer – well, almost. They may not be as complete as a true online backup which backs up your computer’s system state data, too, but they can definitely help.

Mount SkyDrive As A Virtual Drive In Windows

Love the 5GB (soon to be 25GB) of free online storage provided by SkyDrive, but wish you could access it browser-free? That’s the promise of a new application called Gladinet, a desktop software program that delivers web applications and online files to your desktop. With Gladinet installed, online storage sites like SkyDrive and others become available through Windows Explorer, where they exist as a virtual drive.

To use Gladinet, you only need provide your username and password to the program once, then the credentials are stored in a "Safe Card," which can be managed separately from the application itself. When connecting to remote drives, some reports note that Gladinet may take a minute or two to connect to the resource.

In many ways, this program functions as a desktop app for services that don’t provide desktop access. However, with the upcoming Windows Live Photos service (which stores images on SkyDrive), the Windows Live Photo Gallery desktop app integrates seamlessly with the online service, making the need for another desktop app somewhat redundant if you only use SkyDrive for images. But for those who manage all sorts of files on SkyDrive, Gladinet could be a useful tool.

Note: Gladinet says they are now upgrading their app to work with the new 25 GB version of SkyDrive, released Wednesday, 12/3/08.

Amid all the news last week about the upcoming new Windows Live and new Windows Live Photos service, one thing that may have been overlooked is how Windows Live SkyDrive was tied into those announcements. According to a post on the SkyDrive team blog, the team is increasing the amount of online storage from 5 GB to 25 GB! The reason for the increase is to provide more room for all the photos that will soon be uploaded using the new online photo service.

In addition to the storage increase, the SkyDrive service will also offer more features like the ability to download photos directly from SkyDrive to your Windows Live Photo Gallery desktop software. You can also choose to download entire folders as zip files, move files between folders, and copy files to multiple folders.

Another big revamp involves the sharing features and functionality. With the new SkyDrive, you’ll be able to share files and photos with others without requiring them to use a Windows Live ID. If you have certain groups of people that you share photos with on regular basis, you’ll be able to organize them into groups to make repeat sharing easier and faster. And you can see what your family and friends have shared with you all in one place. Commenting on photos will be improved with HTML, spam control and other options.

For Internet Explorer users, there will be an option to keep your IE favorites in sync in between all your computers, too.

The new SkyDrive will have a new look-and-feel when it relaunches so it fits in better with the rest of the new Windows Live. It’s not here yet, but, according to the team blog post, it will be here soon. Stay tuned!

Latest Updates to SkyDrive are Live

The Windows Live SkyDrive team blog gives us the latest on new updates to SkyDrive that launched today. SkyDrive is now available in 24 additional locations, with support for a total of 62 countries. You can now leave comments on any SkyDrive file. You can add captions to photos, there is a click control to quickly move through files in the folder, and the photo previews are larger.

Skydrive Now 5 GIGS!

That is not a typo. Today, the SkyDrive team announced that they are increasing the amount of free storage to five times what it was before, going from 1 GB to 5 GB. With this new release of the service, some other improvements to the site have been made to make the service faster and more reliable too. This new version of SkyDrive, now no longer in beta, is also available in 38 more countries and regions. To see if your region is listed, check out the SkyDrive blog.
