AIE Summer Cyber Camp

Alice Lee is an intern at Microsoft and visited with the Academy of Interactive Entertainment in Seattle as they worked on Windows Phone projects. She brings us this report.

Developing a full-fledged Windows Phone app in one week – that's pretty ambitious, right?

Last week, at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE)'s weekly Summer Cyber Camp, a team of talented high and middle school students set out to do just that. I followed them for one week, documenting the process of creating their 3D game for Windows Phone 7 (WP7), called Color Break. Some of the students began with minimal programming experience while others had been using C# for a few years. At the end of the week, however, they were all capable of writing code, creating graphics, and incorporating more advanced concepts such as physics into the game. By Friday, they'd finished and ported the application to the phone - just five days later (check out the app in action in the video)! It just goes to show that whether you're an absolute beginner or a seasoned expert, developing for the WP can be a simple, fun, and extremely educational process. One student, who had never even coded in C# before, began developing a first person shooter. As a college student myself, I was impressed.

So, how do you get started?
Students: Get Windows 7 for $30

Wow, I just came across a handy link you’ll want to share with any college students (or parents of college students) you know: Windows 7 is only $29.99 for those enrolled in a U.S.-based educational institution. To qualify, the student must be taking at least 0.5 course credits and have either an @EDU.com email address or attend one of the institutions listed here.
Ready for Windows Phone Rockstars?

In March, Microsoft announced the Windows Phone 7 “Rockstar” Award, a contest for student developers looking to build a top-of-the-line mobile application for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 platform, using either Silverlight or the XNA framework.

Since the contest’s launch, 131 teams submitted applications. From those, a winner (the “rockstar”) was chosen plus two-runners up. The winning team gets a free trip to Poland for the Imagine Cup, plus $8000 USD. The first runner up earns $4000 USB and the second runner up gets $3000 USD. All winners receive a new Windows Phone, too.

So who won? An app called “Droid,” as it turns out. The app is a game that involves controlling a machine that destroys other machines using the accelerometer. Players can shoot, repair and defend themselves using the provided controls, while making sure their health doesn’t run out.

One of the runners up also built a game, this one with a funny littel guy that moves about a forest, and another built a comic book reader. All of the winners (and other submitters) have impressive offerings, especially considering these are not professionally built games, but those built by students, 16 years or older currently attending either high school or college.

Using Games To Teach: G4LI Unveiled

Microsoft is teaming up with a handful of universities to study if and how computer games can be useful in education for teaching students math, science, and technology. The research project has Microsoft working with NYU as well as City University of New York, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Parsons the New School for Design, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Columbia’s Teachers College and NYU’s Polytechnic Institute. The test subjects in this study will be middle school students.

Why middle school? According to Ken Perlin, an NYU professor of computer science, in middle school many students “become discouraged or uninterested and pour their time at home into gaming. We think gaming is our starting point to draw them into math, science, and technology-based programs.”

The research study will be called the “Games for Learning Institute.” The budget is $3 million. Microsoft will be paying half with the universities chipping in for the other portion. The study hopes to discover what makes games compelling and playable and what elements make them effective for learning…that is, even they are effective for learning. The games used in testing will be deployed along with curricula to 19 NYC area schools where results in the classroom will be tracked. (via Wired Campus)

To raise awareness for Microsoft's Live@edu, Microsoft is holding a contest among student software developers to see who can design the best application for Windows Live. You can check out some sample apps on the dev.live.com/mashups pages, which include some already created mashups like 3D Geology Maps, a meta search engine, a crisis "hotspot" map, and so much more. To get involved, go to http://www.campusmashups.com. The judging will be 25% public opinion (so get your friends to vote!), 25% usage of Windows Live Tools, and 50% creativity and utility of the application. One grand prize winner will receive $10,000.00 in cash! Two runners up receive $2500/each and two third place winners receive an Xbox 360 Halo 3 prize pack ($500 value).
IMAGINE CUP BRINGS HOPE TO DEAF

Deaf people don’t have equal opportunities to access education as do others without such a handicap. But there is a hope for them which comes with a new project SilentBooks presented by students from the Czech Republic. Ales Sturala (Andy) and Dominika Sedlaczkova from the Brno University of Technology have decided to take the challenge and compete in the biggest student competition in the world – Microsoft’s Imagine Cup 2007. And they have been successful so far. They made it to the finals in Korea with their signing 3D model that provides education for deaf people in sign language instead of classic language. Ales says: “I have been dealing with problems that deaf community has to face for some time now. I’d seen that especially children have a problem to access information when it’s in a written form so I have decided to try to solve it.” Ales is an experienced IC competitor. This is his second time entering finals: “I’d enjoyed it a lot last year. It was great to meet with other students from different countries.” He is happy about his decision to enter the competition despite the fact that he was working on the project for more than half a year almost nonstop: “It was an excellent programming experience for me. I’ve also learnt some new technologies which is great. But this team is not the only hope for the Czech Republic. Imrich Zivcak (Imro) and Lukas Perutka (Lucaso) from the Prague’s Charles University form the Gold Fusion Team and they are going to fight in Hoshimi Programming Battle. These two former roommates have heard about the competition for the first time two years ago and at the beginning were hesitating to enter. At the end they did and this decision brought them to the finals in Korea at the end. Even though that waiting for the results was for them according to Lukas nerve breaking experience they don’t regret it. Imrich is happy about entering the competition not only for the fact that they’ve made it to the finals: “It enabled us to verify our programming abilities.” Both teams believe that they’ll succeed in Korea. Imrich and Lukas had the opportunity to compare their knowledge to that of their competitors already: “We have met with other finalists during semifinals and ended up second then”. Their main concern seems to be safe flight over to Korea. Apart from that they are all excited about getting to know this country, its culture and cuisine. No matter of what is going to happen in Korea, these students know what they want to do with their lives. Ales is moving to Netherlands in September where he is going to study for one year and he hopes that his project will draw interest of some business company which will help with development and distribution of the SilentBooks:” This project hasn’t been created only because of this competition. Its main aim is to help deaf people.” Imrich and Lukas have to get back to their studies soon after the end of the Imagine Cup. They hope that their participation in this event will help them to find a good job later on.
