MOC1 Solutions Brings Wireless Service Advisor To Windows Azure, Streamlines Auto Service Experience

When MOC1 Solutions wanted to move their applications supporting automotive dealerships to the cloud, they chose Windows Azure.

In this video, Software Development Manager Alex Hatzopoulos and Architect Greg Cannon speak with Microsoft Principal Architect Evangelist Brian Loesgen. In this wide ranging conversation, they cover their experiences in ramping up their team, setting up their environments, and share other first-hand application migration experience gained while moving their flagship Wireless Service Advisor™ (WSA™) product to Windows Azure.

WSA uses wireless and mobile technologies to streamline and standardize the Repair Order (RO) write-up process. WSA enables a service advisor to greet customers at their vehicle when they arrive at the dealership service department. Using a tablet PC, the service advisor scans or hand-writes the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate number and transmits the information to multiple databases to retrieve critical customer and vehicle data related to that particular vehicle identifier – the critical data includes repair history, recommended services, warranty and recall information, and customer contact information.

Additionally, the WSA allows the service advisor to complete a full inspection process, handle customer's questions, and provide maintenance recommendations in a timely and interactive fashion, all while standing at the customer's vehicle. The customer can provide service authorization by signing the RO on the tablet PC so they can avoid having to wait for a printed copy. The WSA also allows for the preparation of a printed repair order as well as the update of the DMS database. The WSA presents a user-friendly front-end application that both effectively represents the entire Repair Order write up process and efficiently standardizes the Repair Order write-up procedure. The WSA™ accomplishes all this via an Azure-based backend.

About MOC1 Solutions

Based in in Glendora, CA MOC1 Solutions is a traditional ISV that was founded in 2005 and was incubated in MOC Products until June 2006 when the company was spun out as an independent private entity.
Dell's multi-touch tablet

Multi-touch, which started at Bell Labs nearly 25 years ago, is the hot technology this year and without a doubt one of the technologies I get asked about most by family and friends. So obviously there are a lot of companies working on multi-touch products. A couple weeks ago, Charles Torre took us inside Microsoft Research to see some of the work being done with multi-touch laptops.

But I was still pleasantly surprised when Dell announced their new Latitude XT multi-touch tablet at Oracle's OpenWorld (video via JKKMobile), and with products coming "in a couple of months", it looks like they're going to be first to market with this technology, congratulations Dell. The question now is what apps will ship for multi-touch? Things are getting very interesting and we'll keep you informed as details come out.

Richard Anderson - Interactive teaching with Tablet PCs at University of Washington

Recently I visited Richard Anderson's classroom at the University of Washington and watched how he used Tablet PCs to teach his computer science class. It is really cool. Students can send him notes, post their thoughts, and interact with him, via their
Tablet PCs. This technology came out of
Microsoft Research's ConferenceXP Project and the
UW Classroom Presenter has a site which has more details and downloads too. The first minute of the video shows off his classroom then we start an interview with Richard and a few others who use or helped build the Classroom Presenter.

Target Indy Race Team - Inside the technology of a race team (3 videos)

Note: To see all three videos, click on the headline.

Does your code go 218 m.p.h.?

The code on this project goes that fast and faster. In October we traveled to meet the
Target Indy Race Team (Chip Ganassi Racing) to find out how the Target team uses the technology.

OK, OK, a Microsoft employee, Eric Maino got us tickets and introduced us to the team. We knew the Target team uses lots of Microsoft stuff, so we were very fortunate to get into the garage and other behind-the-scenes areas.

The interview starts in the garage. It got a bit noisy, sorry about that (keep watching, the interview starts at about 1:30 after we stop and start). You meet Brad who's an engineer on the team.

More than 30 sensors on each car spits out tons of data on each car on all sorts of things. How high the car is off the ground (all four wheels). Fuel flow. Speed. Temperatures of tires and brakes.

Oh, and show this one to your kids! This will get them to go to University. You don't get on this team without a technical college degree.

Later, at about 33:00 you'll meet the race engineer. He runs the entire team from a Tablet PC.

There's actually three videos in this series. This one,
an interview with the driver, and
a look at the equipment in the pits.

Sorry these took so long to get to you. We had some troubles encoding the video off of our new HD camcorder.

We want to thank the
Target Race Team (Chip Ganassi Racing). They treated us very well and gave us access every kid dreams of.

In the pits with the Target race team

Ever been in the pits with an Indy race team? Well, the Target team invited us along. Here's just some raw shots we took while they were practicing for the Toyota 400. At about 4:30 in the video you'll see the application they use to track the cars as
they go around the track (and see data from the more than 30 sensors on each car). We were at the race to see how the team uses Microsoft technology (they use SQL Server, .NET, and Tablet PCs, among other things). Oh, and at 7:30 you'll see a cool peelout.
