John first gives an overview of the goals of SP1 and how this launch leads us closer to Microsoft's vision of the "Cloud OS" while adding support for Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2013. Next, he and Symon talk about major enhancements to Software Defined Networking (SDN), using new network virtualization features from Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, and how the Hyper-V extensible switch can be viewed through Operations Manager.

The discussion then moves to the industry trend of improving "DevOps"—the improved collaboration between developers and IT operations through self-service and automated bug reporting—specifically focusing on the Global Service Monitoring (GSM) feature, which uses Windows Azure to test websites from around the world, then automatically report performance issues to the developers through Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2012 and Visual Studio 2012. 

Finally, John and Symon talk about the improvements to Microsoft's hybrid cloud model, including backing up data to Azure through Data Protection Manager (DPM) and migrating VMs from the private cloud to the public cloud with App Controller. Symon ends the interview with a demo at [18:00] of using App Controller to manage his VMs in a 3rd party hoster's environment using the new Service Provider Foundation (SPF) features.

You may or may not know that I'm a regular co-host on the RadioTFS podcast. One of my roles for cast is gathering Team Foundation Server/Service, Visual Studio, ALM, etc. stores for us to talk about where as you can imagine, that's how I found today's project.

I don't know about you, but I pretty much live in Visual Studio and I'm also a continuous user of Team Foundation Server/Service/CodePlex.

If you've made the jump to Visual Studio 2012, and you're also a TFS/CodePlex user you've seen the new Team Explorer. But do you know just how extensible the new Team Explorer is?

Extending Team Explorer in Visual Studio 2012

Team Explorer in Visual Studio 2012 offers multiple options for extending the user experience. This sample demonstrates several of the extensibility points by adding a new Team Explorer page as well as by placing a new section onto the Pending Changes page.

• Adding a new "Recent Changes" Team Explorer page with two sections.
• Adding a new "Selected File Info" section to the built-in Pending Changes page.
• Adding a "Recent Changes" navigation link under the Pending Changes navigation item.

Building the Sample

This sample requires Visual Studio 2012 and the Visual Studio 2012 SDK.  Open the solution and press F5 to run/debug.

One of the nice things about this sample is that everything runs the first time, even to opening Visual Studio is in "Experimental" mode.

That said, if you get a "The application which this project type is based on was not found" or the project won't load or you get "This Project is not compatible with this version of Visual Studio" errors (all of which I got..sigh) then you probably just need to install the Visual Studio 2012 SDK. You can get the latest and greatest from Visual Studio Developer Center > Extend Visual Studio > Download the Visual Studio 2012 SDK.

Once you install the SDK, the Solution and Project should load and when run, should fire up a new instance of Visual Studio with the extension loaded.

So what can you do? Here's a taste;

Team Explorer Extensibility

Pages and Sections

A single view in Team Explorer is referred to as a page (ITeamExplorerPage).  A page may provide a WPF control that is placed at the top of the client area, but the control is not required.  No two pages can have the same ID in Team Explorer.

A page may contain one or more sections (ITeamExplorerSection) that are arranged in priority order.  A section also provides a WPF control that contains the UI for the section.  Sections may be first-party or third-party extensions to a page.

Home Page - Navigation Items and Links

The Home page is a special Team Explorer page that has its own extensibility.  The Home page contains a list of navigation items (ITeamExplorerNavigationItem) and navigation links (ITeamExplorerNavigationLink).  The list of navigation item plugins is used for both the Home page and the Team Explorer navigation control at the top of the window.

Plugin Interfaces

A plugin should implement the interface for the extension it is providing.  The interfaces are declared in the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Controls namespace in Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Controls.dll.

As you can see, the new extensibility lets you seamlessly add features and functionality to the new Team Explorer.

How does it work? MEF of course!

Plugin Discovery

Plugin discovery for Team Explorer is accomplished using MEF.  The assembly containing any plugins must be installed in one of Visual Studio’s supported extension directories, and must be accompanied by an extension.vsixmanifest file that declares the assembly provides MEF components.  The recommended packaging mechanism is using VSIX and the Visual Studio Extension Gallery.

There is a class attribute for each plugin type that exports the plugin for discovery by Team Explorer.  The attributes are defined in the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Controls namespace in Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Controls.dll.

But Greg, what about the impact these kinds of plugins could have on Visual Studio? I don't want to go back to the old days where extension bloat killed performance!

Plugin Lifetime

No page or section will be instantiated until the user navigates to it for the first time.  The page and all of its sections are then instantiated and then initialized in priority order.  A page or section is only initialized once during its lifetime.  The Initialize method is the appropriate time to query for any services and do any initialization for child controls.  EventArgs provide an IServiceProvider as well as optional initial page context.

In order to manage memory efficiently, only the current page is held in memory at any given time.  When the user navigates to a new page, the current page will have its SaveContext method called in order to preserve any context, and then it is closed.  See the "Context Management" section for more discussion on how that context object is managed.

What about Context Management? Covered. Sharing Info: Data, Selection, Etc? Covered. Navigation, Notifications? Covered.

Technical Interview: At [06:50] Symon met with Adam Hall, a Senior Product Marketing Manager for System Center, to discuss operations and management for applications in a private cloud. Adam first provided a historical overview of monitoring with System Center 2012 Operations Manager, including the AVIcode acquisition, and why monitoring is important for not just availability, but also for performance.  Next they discuss the relationship between the infrastructure or operations specialist and the developer of the application, and how the barriers between the two parties has been reduced with this release.  Adam then demos Application Performance Monitoring (APM) and connectors between Operations Manager and Team Foundation Server (TFS).

Abstract
NuGet has been around for some time now and has introduced the concept of package management into the heads of many .NET developers. A central package repository and integrated tooling suddenly made it a whole lot easier to deliver and ship software components, proof of which can be found into the increasing rate at which many packages make it to the NuGet Gallery. At the same time, many businesses are struggling how to take optimal benefit from this while trying to avoid a situation commonly known as "dependency hell". Package hell can be just around the corner if not implemented properly.

Questions are raised on how to deal with symbols and debugging. Do we check these packages into source control or not? What's the impact if I don't? How to mitigate potential downtime of the NuGet Gallery? This session will provide you with guidance, tips and tricks on how you can take benefit from NuGet and TFS11 to take your CI environment to the next level.

Dave Lloyd
Dave Lloyd is a founding partner of ObjectSharp. He has 25+ years of experience in the IT industry designing and building software solutions for a large number of clients in varying industries. Dave is a seasoned project manager with a great deal of experience implementing process into development teams, from small and large ISV's to in house development teams. Dave has also spent time during his career implementing test solutions for clients. Working with the most current automated test tools and implementing successful test environments. Dave brings to the table 20+ years of teaching experience.

Because of Dave's experience in the many roles of a software development team it's only natural that he would gravitate toward Team Foundation Server and the ALM (Application Lifecycle Management) world. A lot of Dave's assignments involve helping teams with their development process and to better utilize Team Foundation Server to enhance their Software Development Lifecycle. Dave has received the Microsoft MVP award for ALM.

Barry Gervin
Barry Gervin is a founding Partner of ObjectSharp. As a Principal Consultant and Instructor with ObjectSharp, Barry provides technical leadership to his valued clients, staff, and the development community. Over his 17 year career in the IT industry, he has helped many development teams architect and successfully deliver large software projects within tight schedules and budgets that consistently perform for their end users. He currently holds several technical designations including MCSD.NET, MSF Practitioner and MS Certified Trainer. Barry currently serves as a MS Regional Director in Southern Ontario and has received the Microsoft MVP Award for Solutions Architecture for the past 3 years.

Islam Gomaa
Islam Gomaa is a Data Protection Manager MVP from Ottawa, Canada, specializing in System Center Products, disaster recovery and system infrastructure running on the Microsoft server technology stack. Islam brings over 12 years of expertise in helping organizations align their business goals using Microsoft technology and deploying Microsoft-based solutions for the private and public sector. He is also a member of the Windows Springboard Technical Expert Panel [STEP] for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 having delivered STEP presentations in Ottawa.

He has authored several webcasts on Data Protection Manager 2007& 2010 including "Protecting Applications with DPM2007" and "DPM and Opalis Automation for Disaster Recovery". Islam presented at TechEd 2011 in Atlanta Georgia, and the I365 Worldwide summit in Salt Lake City. He is a frequent presenter for both OWSUG in Ottawa and MITPRO in Montreal.

Islam has a B.Sc. in computer science from Montreal University, and holds several Microsoft technical designations. He is an active member of the IT community. Islam enjoys sharing his adventures and ideas about system administration through his blog at http://owsug.ca/blogs/islamGomaa.

William Bressette
With Horn IT Solutions since 2007, William is an award-winning member of their team (2010 Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Award and of the "Impact Award 2008" for Infrastructure Design). William is responsible for implementing and managing Horn IT Solutions participation in the Microsoft Partner Program and for Horn achieving Gold Certified membership Level with 5 competencies: Advance Infrastructure, Network Infrastructure, Infrastructure Worker, Licensing and Security solutions along with Small Business Specialist.

As Network Architect William performs Network and Data Center Design for medium sized organizations across Canada, implements network monitoring tools for customer sites and creates and manages IT Policy for customer locations. His excellent project management skills are applied to small and large customer projects as he manages technical services as well as development and management of the Microsoft Packages Service Program at Horn IT.

He graduated from Georgian College in Barrie in 1996 with a major in mathematics.
