Now you can use a Git repository locally, and when you're ready to, check in code to TFS. You can even continue to take advantage of integration between work items (such as bugs and requirements) in TFS when you want to enable end-to-end traceability of the relationship between your work and your code changes. This bridge is a cross-platform tool built with Java, so it runs on many operating systems, including OS X, Linux, and Windows. This means that you can use Git clients (such as Xcode) and maintain the ability to check code into Team Foundation Server.

In this video, Matthew Mitrik, a program manager on the Team Foundation Server team, shows off this new capability.

You can even continue to take advantage of integration between work items (such as bugs and requirements) in TFS when you want to enable end-to-end traceability of the relationship between your work and your code changes. At the same time, many businesses are struggling how to take optimal benefit from this while trying to avoid a situation commonly known as "dependency hell". Package hell can be just around the corner if not implemented properly.

Questions are raised on how to deal with symbols and debugging. Do we check these packages into source control or not? What's the impact if I don't? How to mitigate potential downtime of the NuGet Gallery? This session will provide you with guidance, tips and tricks on how you can take benefit from NuGet and TFS11 to take your CI environment to the next level.

Abstract

Unlike Visual SourceSafe (VSS), which relied on a file-based storage mechanism, Team Foundation version control stores all artefacts, as well as a record of all changes and current check-outs in a SQL Server database which makes it highly reliable and scalable. It supports features such as multiple simultaneous check-outs, conflict resolution, shelving and unshelving, branching and merging, and the ability to set security levels on any level of a source tree, alongside the most visible features of document versioning, locking, rollback, and atomic commits. The source control mechanism integrates with TFS Work Item Management as well. TFS administrators can enforce check-in policies that require specific requirements to have passed and individual versions of files can be assigned labels. This session is targeted towards developers who want to know all the details about the new version control features in Team Foundation Server 2010.
