      <title>&quot;Mastering Video Compression&quot; at Stanford August 20-24</title>
      <description><![CDATA[ <p>It's getting to that time of the year again - my annual week-long video <a href="http://digitalmediaacademy.org/courses/video-compression-training.html" target="_blank">compression seminar at Stanford University</a>. I've been doing compression training at Stanford since 1999, and I think this will be the 10th time I've taught it in the week-long format.</p><p>The class has long been a highlight of my year - as many have said, to really learn something you have to teach it, and I've learned more about compression teaching this class than anywhere else. When I was negotiating over joining Microsoft, permission to keep teaching the class and covering non-Microsoft formats&nbsp;in it was one of my requirements. </p><p>The basic format is a&nbsp;full week in a classroom with me and students coming from a variety of experiences and skill levels. We spend about half of the class doing lecture and Q&amp;A, and half doing hands-on compression. Each student gets their own workstation preloaded with a variety of compression tools and sources. Students are welcome to bring in their own sources and projects which we use in the class.</p><p>Anyway, it's a great class. I&#39;ve been doing compression training at Stanford since 1999, and I think this will be the 10th time I&#39;ve taught it in the week-long format.
