Fresh Paint is an excellent Windows Store App (for Windows 8). It's fun to use, realistic and beautiful ( yes, we really like this app ). In this episode we will meet the developers behind Fresh Paint, Subha Bhattacharyay, Adam Szofran, and Kaushik Barat. Being native developers, they built their Windows Store app using C++. Being modern native Windows developers, they used DirectX and XAML (including DirectX running on XAML surfaces) to generate a beautiful UX with very realistic painting experiences - you can literally watch the paint dry . The team shares many details that should spark your imagination for writing compelling C++ Windows Store Apps using DirectX and XAML.

C++ + DirectX + XAML is an incredibly compelling combination (the simplicity of XAML and the power of DX, composed in C++). This is how you can really push the boundaries of what's possible for modern Windows apps.

UX in Windows 8: how to build a great app

There is a difference between a Metro Style Windows 8 app and a great Windows 8 app. Building a great Windows 8 app takes more than technical skill and good programming. A great Windows 8 app is about putting the user first, building something that he can and wants to use. The overall user experience of an application is very much underestimated. In this session we'll take a closer look at the design principles and usability guidelines that will make your app great.

YOW! 2011: Allen Wirfs-Brock and Rob Manson - Ambient Computing, Augmented Reality, and JavaScript

Allen Wirfs-Brock is a Research Fellow at Mozilla working on the next version of JavaScript (EcmaScript, to be precise), codenamed "Harmony." Allen is the chief editor of the EcmaScript specification. He's also legendary for his work on SmallTalk. It's always fun to chat with Allen. His talk—"The Web Browser is a Transitional Technology" (also the topic of a blog post of his)—was all about how the future is HTML5 and JavaScript (what's the need for an OS when you have a browser that runs HTML5?). Of course, we talk about and debate this idea.

Rob Manson is a pioneer in the field of Augmented Reality as it's related to the future of computing experience—it's the medium Rob believes will define personal computing in the age of pervasive computing, as he calls it (his talk at YOW! is "Augmented Reality Is the UI for Pervasive Computing"). Rob is also a big fan of HTML5 and sees a natural union of the web and augmented reality.

Putting Allen and Rob together to geek out on JavaScript, HTML5, augmented reality, and ambient or pervasive computing made great sense (Allen's idea!). The future of personal computing is a fascinating topic and Allen and Rob are great folks to talk to about it! Thanks, gentlemen, for the great conversation.

Key questions: What makes HTML5 the "right" programming model for driving personal computing forward into the future? What's the relationship between augmented reality, ambient computing, and HTML5? Allen and Rob answer these questions.

Recently, UX legend Bill Buxton was in town and stopped by to share what he's been up to. In this video, he discusses how integrated devices with things that "just work together," UX, and touch might all be in our lives to a much larger degree in the near future. This is a short conversation with Bill where he touches on his thoughts about the next version of Surface, UX, and the new UX Lightning series at MIX11, which he compares to "speed dating." Bill also drops an interesting nugget—he's used nothing but slates/tablets since Nov 2002, and he even wrote his popular book on a tablet!

Innovation is an overused buzzword these days. What does it mean, really? Well, Microsoft Research is in the business of scientific discovery which often leads to innovations that end up in the hands of computer users (or not in the hands of the computer users as the case may be). One area of scientific focus at Microsoft Research, Computer Vision, has brought us the popular gaming controller device Kinect. Kinect has changed the evolutionary path of human computer interaction. It is in some sense a peripheral device used to control computers, like a mouse or keyboard, but it turns the user into the controller and enables the computer to understand natural user intention. Come learn from the scientists behind Kinect what it means for all of us going forward. There’s much more to this brave new world of human computer interaction than playing games on the Xbox 360. Microsoft Research will also present and demo new prototype development technologies for JavaScript analysis and automatically improving web site performance, plug-in free, of course.

We also talk about our design content at MIX, called the UX Lightning Series. We’ve lined up 12 expert speakers to present on various design and UX topics to stimulate creative thinking in a compelling format that will keep things moving along very quickly with a new speaker hitting the stage every 10 minutes.
