Xbox Kinect – It’s Not Just About the Games

We’re only a month away from the launch of Xbox Kinect, and whilst a huge amount has been written about some of the kick ass, motion-controlled games that are coming down the line (Kinect Adventures is definitely my favourite), there’s another really cool feature that hasn’t has as much limelight – live video chat.

Xbox LIVE Video Kinect (to give it its full name) allows you to chat via the Kinect’s video camera with friends who are also using Kinect, or on Windows Live Messenger. It includes an Auto-Zoom Focus which instantly finds you and follows you around the room (if you’re moving about) so you’re always in frame. Kinect’s integrated microphone means that there’s no headset required too.

When you go into the Video Kinect menu, you’ll be shown a list of your friends who have recently been online. Some will also be on Kinect, others on Windows Live Messenger, but you’ll see an integrated list.

Once you’re chatting with a friend, you can choose to watch a video together, which will open up in a separate box on screen – you can choose Movies, Sports, News and Music videos all from the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

Video Chat on the TV used to be the stuff of science fiction, but next month, it’s all yours.
Major Update for Fav Media Center Plugin, TunerFreeMCE

The popular Windows Media Center plugin, TunerFreeMCE, has been updated in a release the developer, Martin Millmore, is calling a “major” upgrade. Note: The example has been updated to work with the V1 version of AppFabric Access Control. There were two changes from the CTP version to V1 that made the update necessary: 1) V1 uses version 0.9 of the WRAP protocol, instead of version 0.8, and 2) the
issuer name generated by V1 is the base URI of the STS endpoint for the service namespace, instead of the full URI.
The screen cast has not yet been updated, and still shows the user providing the full URI of the STS endpoint as the key description, rather than the base URI. In all other respects, however, it remains accurate.

The Hulu Plugins Just Keep Coming!

You know something’s a hit when you just can’t stop hearing about it. Such is the case with Hulu, the online site where U.S. users (sorry, world!) can watching popular television programs for free. Since Hulu is a web service, we’ve started to see many different ways which people are integrating Hulu with their Media Center PCs including the new PlayOn plugin, the XBMC plugin for Hulu, the upcoming software from Boxee, and soon-to-launch plugin from SecondRun.tv.

But still there’s more coming. The latest tip comes from The Media Center Blog, where we learn that the beta version of the TunerFree MCE plugin delivers Hulu to Media Center, too. Why choose this one over the others? Well since developer Martin Millmore is in the UK, his plugin also offers some of the best British IPTV content, including BBC News, ITV, Channel 4 and 5. You can download his plugin (beta) from here.

Hulu Coming Soon to Media Center via SecondRun.tv

Forget paying $30 for PlayOn, if all you want is Hulu on your Media Center PC, it looks like there will be yet another option soon. A new third party extension called SecondRun.tv is coming soon which will let you browse and watch Hulu video on any machine that runs Windows Vista Media Center. According the developer, the plugin is already fully functional, he’s just ironing out a few kinks. He also noted that he plans on testing it on Windows 7 and media center extenders, as the goal is for it to work on extenders (He has 2 Xbox 360’s, so you know he’s motivated!). He said that it will probably work on extenders now, though.

To find out when it gets released, keep checking the http://www.secondrun.tv site – it looks like it will be very soon. It also looks like this plugin will be beating Boxee to the punch, whose Windows version of their software is still in alpha.

Stream Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and More to Your Xbox 360

A Windows utility called PlayOn has just left its beta phase and is now available for everyone to try. With this installed, you can stream video from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, as well as video from TV networks like CBS, CNN, and ESPN right to your Xbox 360. Of course, if you’re primarily interested in Netflix, there’s no need to get a special utility – the recent update to Xbox adds Netflix streaming as an option on the dashboard. However, being able to stream from Hulu and YouTube is the sort of thing that makes you sit up and take notice.

To use PlayOn, you just install the software to any networked XP or Vista machine (they don’t specifically say “Windows 7” but I’m going to give it a shot this weekend – let me know if I shouldn’t!). The software, once installed behaves as a DLNA/UPnP media server and browser that pulls RSS feeds from content providers, and presents them to DLNA-compliant networked media devices. In other words, the PC software pulls in the media streams from the web sites and services and then sends them over your home network to your Xbox.

The only downside to PlayOn is that it’s not free – after a 14-day trial, you can purchase the program for $30.00. A little steep for these budget-conscious times, especially considering that there’s already a free plug-in for Hulu (install XBMC plus the XBMC plug-in for Hulu) and Xbox already does Netflix. That means you’re paying mostly for YouTube and the miscellaneous TV networks. That may or may not be worth $30 to you – it’s a personal decision. However, there is something to be said for having it all in one easy-to-manage software package. And at least the $30 is a one-time fee. Hmmm, maybe I just talked myself into it.

(via LifeHacker)

Resume Video in Windows 7 Media Center

Media Center MVP Mike Garcen recently pointed out a great feature in the new and improved Windows 7 Media Center application – video resume. According to Mike, in previous Media Center versions, you could stop the playback of Recorded TV and then later resume the shows where you left off, but regular videos didn’t have the same option. That discrepancy has now been fixed. You can resume the playback of any video (that is, non-DVR-MS or WTV) in Media Center – not just Recorded TV.

To see this feature in action, just add some videos (DivX, Avi, wmv, etc.) into your Windows Media Center Video Library and click on one of the files to start playing it automatically. Then click Stop. Now, go do something else like play another track or even close Media Center entirely. When you return to Media Center and click to play that same video, you will be given the option to either restart or resume playback. How convenient!

This is one of those things that isn’t a huge announcement in and of itself, but just another minor enhancement that, when combined with slews of others like it, make for a better overall computing experience in Windows 7.

(Thanks Ian Dixon!)

Sync Windows Mobile With Media Center

The Digital Lifestyle blog recently pointed us to a post that explained how you could sync recorded TV on your DVR with your Windows Mobile device. This is something that no other smartphones are capable of doing, notes Adam Lein of pocketnow.com. Instead of buying expensive videos and TV programs, you can sync your Windows Mobile device with any PC running Windows Media Center (Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate users – this includes you). To do so, all you need to do is set up your Media Center PC with a TV tuner so it can act as a DVR, recording your favorite shows to its hard drive for later viewing in the Media Center application. TV tuner kits are usually around $100 and can plug into the USB port on your computer.

Once your PC is set up to record TV, go to Tasks –> Sync in Windows Media Center to set up syncing with your Windows Mobile Device. (Make sure your device has a good memory card with a lot of room!).

You can customize the automatically selected content for syncing, create playlists, and add other criteria to determine which items to sync. For details on these steps, check out the blog post.

Once your done with the initial configurations, your device will then sync with Media Center anytime its plugged into the USB port. <itunes:summary> The Digital Lifestyle blog recently pointed us to a post that explained how you could sync recorded TV on your DVR with your Windows Mobile device. If you have a lot of TV shows, it may be best to sync overnight since it can take time to convert the files to mobile-ready format prior to the sync. To play the files on your Windows Mobile device, navigate to the “My TV” section of your library in Windows Media Player. You can now watch TV on your phone even if you’re in an area with no reception. The best part? It’s free! </itunes:summary>
