Sampling samples with the new Sample Browser for Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Studio 2010

Code. Just show me the code... Code samples can be are our a dev life blood. Sure documentation is great and has a place, but in the end what dev doesn't just want to see some code?

Today's project is one we've highlighted before, yet with this update easily deserves to be mentioned again.

Releasing the new Sample Browser for Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Studio 2010

Developers love code samples. Samples often serve as the starting point for many developers to learn a new technology. They also provide straightforward solutions and helpful references when we as developers need to solve tough programming tasks. Some developers even live by code samples.
In partnership with Visual Studio Product Team and MSDN Samples Gallery Team, Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework releases Sample Browser Visual Studio Extension for Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Studio 2010 - an effort to evolve the code sample use experience. You can search and download 3500+ Microsoft official code samples and community samples, including over 700 Windows 8 samples and more than 1000 All-In-One Code Framework customer-driven code samples. With its integrated sample search, flexible sample download and more than ten useful features designed for easier access and management of code samples, we hope to put the power of tens of thousands of code samples at developers’ fingertips.

Yes, VS2010 and VS2012. Many of us are going to be living in both VS worlds for a while, so its great to see this kind of support for both.

Dave Lloyd is a founding partner of ObjectSharp. He has 25+ years of experience in the IT industry designing and building software solutions for a large number of clients in varying industries. Dave is a seasoned project manager with a great deal of experience implementing process into development teams, from small and large ISV's to in house development teams. Dave has also spent time during his career implementing test solutions for clients. Working with the most current automated test tools and implementing successful test environments. Dave brings to the table 20+ years of teaching experience.

Because of Dave's experience in the many roles of a software development team it's only natural that he would gravitate toward Team Foundation Server and the ALM (Application Lifecycle Management) world. In this episode, Brian Keller shows how manual testers can use Microsoft Test Manager 2010 to manage their test cases. They can document all of the steps they will use to test a particular feature or requirement and then record whether each step passes or fails. Additionally, they can record their actions and specify that the next time they run a test, some of the steps will run automatically. Bugs created with Test Manager are stored in TFS and include a wealth of information developers can use to understand what happened.

In this episode, Robert shows how to use the profiling tools in Visual Studio Premium and Ultimate to identify performance issues in your applications. He demonstrates two profiling methods: Sampling and Instrumentation. Sampling collects data on the CPU methods are using. Instrumentation collects data on how much time each method takes to run. Once you know which areas of your code are most impacting performance, you know where to start looking for ways you can improve that performance.

Python Tools for Visual Studio 1.1 is now available in Alpha!

PTVS turns VS into an IDE for Python. PTVS a free, open source plug-in for Visual Studio 2010 from Microsoft's Developer Division. PTVS enables developers to use all the major productivity features of Visual Studio to build Python code using either CPython or IronPython and adds new features such as using High Performance Computing clusters to scale your code. Together with one of the standard distros, you can turn Visual Studio into a powerful Technical Computing IDE.

Visual Studio Toolbox: Analyzing Your Code

In this episode, Robert looks at how you can analyze your code to see if it meets coding standards. Standards are made up of rules and Visual Studio includes about 200 rules organized into rule sets. If you are using Visual Studio Premium or Ultimate, you can use the managed code analysis tool to check your code and see where your code violates the rules. If you don't have Premium or Ultimate, you can use FxCop, a standalone code analysis tool that is part of the Windows SDK.

Visual Studio Toolbox: Customizing the Visual Studio Start Page

In this episode, Robert reviews the Visual Studio Start page, showing how to configure it so that it automatically appears (or doesn't) as well as how to customize the RSS feed that appears on the Latest News tab. Since the Start page is XAML and can be customized, Robert builds a custom Start page that displays a number of developer-related RSS feeds and downloads two customized Start pages from the Visual Studio Gallery.

Visual Studio Toolbox: Using LINQ to XML to Write XML

Previously on Visual Studio Toolbox, Robert showed how to use LINQ to XML to query data from Web sites. In this episode, Robert shows how to use LINQ to XML to write XML. He starts with a simple example that stores personal settings in an XML file, and then retrieves wines from Wine.com and writes them to an XML file. This provides offline storage of the wines data. (You can think of this as the second half of his review of LINQ to XML, but last week's episode was a robust 40 minutes long while this one is a crisp 15. So it's really more like the last quarter )

Visual Studio Toolbox: Using LINQ to XML to Query Data on the Web

These days, Web sites are providing access to a large amount of data, everything from RSS feeds to pictures to movie titles and more. Often, all you need to do in an application is send an HTTP request to a Web site. The Web site sends the data back via XML, and the easiest way to work with that data is to use LINQ queries. In this episode, Robert shows you how to use LINQ to XML to make sense of the XML data a Web site sends you. He gives examples of working with an RSS feed, retrieving images from Flickr, querying for wineries and wines using Wine.com, and returning movies from NetFlix. You'll see basic queries, see how to retrieve data from elements and attributes, and see how to work with namespaces.

LightSwitch is the fastest way to build database applications for the desktop and the cloud. In this episode, Robert shows you how to make developing with LightSwitch even faster with the LightSwitch Starter Kits. These Starter Kits cover common business needs like expense reporting and issue tracking. All you need to do is download and install one of the kits and then create a new LightSwitch project based on it. LightSwitch creates data tables and screens and writes some basic code for you. You can press F5 and run or customize the application to meet your needs. And because you built it with LightSwitch, the application is well architected and scalable.
