New Tools for Azure Storage and Diagnostics

In this show, Robert is joined by Boris Scholl and Merwan Hade, Program Managers on the Visual Studio Azure Tools team. They provide a high level overview of the just announced new tools in Visual Studio for working with Azure Storage and performing diagnostics. These tools are available as part of the Windows Azure SDK 2.0.

Merwan shows how the Table Explorer and Query Builder make it easier for developers to work with Azure storage. He shows adding and querying Azure table entities from Visual Studio. Boris shows how you can take advantage of Diagnostic Configuration and the Diagnostics Summary page to troubleshoot a deployed cloud service application.

Visual Studio 2012 Update 2

Starting with Visual Studio 2012, Microsoft has moved to providing updates to Visual Studio on a regular cadence of shorter intervals. The second such update, Visual Studio 2012 Update 2, is now available. In addition to bug fixes, Update 2 contains new features in four areas: agile planning, quality enablement, line of business applications, and developer experience. In this episode, Orville McDonald and Dmitry Lyalin show us some of their favorite new Update 2 features.

Introduction to Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2012

With Office and SharePoint 2013, you can now build a new class of apps that extend and personalize the way we create and consume information.

Develop apps as web applications. You can use HTML and JavaScript for client-side code, and your choice of language for server-side code, such as VB.NET, C#, or PHP. Use your favorite tools and hosting environment to develop, test, and deploy your app.

Apps can interact with Office thanks to a new JavaScript API, consistent across multiple Office applications. Take advantage of OAuth support in SharePoint, along with a new set of REST APIs, to connect and interact with SharePoint while hosting your app in the cloud.

Finally, publish and sell your apps through the Office and SharePoint Store or distribute IT-approved apps through an internal App Catalog

GoingNative 14: Image Processing, Image Watch, Exceptions

You recently learned about Image Watch, a Visual Studio 2012 plug-in for visually debugging (watch window, locals, etc...) image processing code in C++. How does it work? What does the implementation look like (or how was it designed, how much modern C++ does it employ, how old is the code base, etc...). You can't talk about shared libraries in C++, ones that have been around for a while, without talking about exceptions. You either love them or hate them and the Image Watch developers have internal customers (devs inside Microsoft) that either love them or hate them... We geek out on that for a while, of course.

Overall, if you want to understand Image Watch more deeply and meet some great C++ developers who work at Microsoft doing very innovative things (in Microsoft Research, specifically) with C++, then this is for you! Rock and roll.

Introducing Image Watch - A VS 2012 Plug-In for C++ Image and Video Debugging

Image Watch is a new Visual Studio 2012 plug-in for debugging C++ image and video processing applications, for example photo or augmented reality apps. Image Watch provides a watch window that can display in-memory bitmaps during debugging, so you no longer need to litter your code with "save-this-intermediate-image-to-a-file" statements when tracking down bugs. The initial release has built-in support for OpenCV image types and can be extended for viewing user-defined image types as well.

Here, Wolf Kienzle, Senior Research Developer, Interactive Visual Media group, Microsoft Research Redmond, explains and demos this excellent new tool for C++ developers building image, video or augmented reality apps. In effect, you can step into pixels. Excellent!

Edge Show 49 - System Center 2012 SP1 Launch

In this video, Symon Perriman meets with John Allwright, a Senior Product Marketing Manager in Windows Server & Management, to talk about this week's System Center 2012 Service Pack 1 (SP1) launch.

John first gives an overview of the goals of SP1 and how this launch leads us closer to Microsoft's vision of the "Cloud OS" while adding support for Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2013. Next, he and Symon talk about major enhancements to Software Defined Networking (SDN), using new network virtualization features from Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, and how the Hyper-V extensible switch can be viewed through Operations Manager.

The discussion then moves to the industry trend of improving "DevOps"—the improved collaboration between developers and IT operations through self-service and automated bug reporting—specifically focusing on the Global Service Monitoring (GSM) feature, which uses Windows Azure to test websites from around the world, then automatically report performance issues to the developers through Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2012 and Visual Studio 2012.

Finally, John and Symon talk about the improvements to Microsoft's hybrid cloud model, including backing up data to Azure through Data Protection Manager (DPM) and migrating VMs from the private cloud to the public cloud with App Controller. Symon ends the interview with a demo at [18:00] of using App Controller to manage his VMs in a 3rd party hoster's environment using the new Service Provider Foundation (SPF) features.

Designing Windows 8 Line of Business Apps Revisited

In this episode, Robert revisits the Windows 8 line of business app he wrote. This app provides the ability for employees to create and submit expense reports—and for managers to view and approve or reject them. Robert first reviews the app as you last saw it and then discusses what changes he made to the app's user interface and why he thinks those changes resulted in a much better app.

He also announces that the app is now available for your downloading pleasure on CodePlex.

Using Azure Mobile Services in a Windows 8 App
