How-To Geek’s latest regarding a complete desktop customization guide for Halo fans, I thought it was worth sharing.

Here, one of my favorite “how-to” bloggers offers up custom wallpapers, icon packs and Halo fonts, all of which can be used to create the perfect Halo-inspired desktop. The wallpapers feature Master Chief, of course, as well as other scenes from Halo games.
Also, there are several different icon packs to choose from, which work on Windows 7, Vista or XP. And if you want to go all out, there are three different Halo fonts available for download as well.

You can grab all the downloads from

Bing's Wallpaper Search Feature

Amit Agarwal recently posted a handy tip to his blog about one of Bing’s perhaps lesser-known features: wallpaper search. When you search for a keyword or phrase using Bing’s image search portal, the options on the left side of the page let you further narrow down your choices by image size: small, medium and large, for example. But beneath those options is another: “Wallpaper.”

Click this and Bing will automatically (automagically?) filter the search results to display just those that exactly match your computer screen’s resolution. You can then find an image you like and set it as your desktop background. Nice!

Agarwal also says this will work on mobile too, but you’ll have to switch over to the desktop website for Bing in order to use the feature. For more detailed instructions, check out his post here.
Bing4Free Lets You Use Bing.com Images for Desktop Wallpaper

There are a number of ways to use Bing.com’s background images for wallpaper: you can use a utility like the Bing Downloader, access stored images via online archives like the Bing Image Archive, or you can even grab an official Microsoft Windows 7 theme pack of Bing’s Best. Now there’s a new tool you can add to the list: Bing4Free. Uncovered by the Life Rocks 2.0 blog, this app downloads wallpapers from bing.com at scheduled intervals of your choosing. You can also specify where the images are saved, how often the images are switched out, and how the images should be placed on the screen (stretched, centered, etc.). The utility isn’t just limited to the images from the U.S., either. It can grab the photos from the localized versions of Bing including China, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. And if you want to get really technical, you can manually add other regions via its config file. Bing4Free is, as the name implies, a free download. However, the software is still in beta so all the usual “proceed at your own risk” caveats apply. You can grab the download directly from Codeplex here.

More Windows 7 Theme Packs and Wallpaper

Now that the Windows 7 public release is just around the corner, people are getting into the spirit of celebrating the new OS by releasing their own unofficial but very cool Windows 7 logoed wallpapers and theme packs.
An Easier Way to Grab Bing's Background Wallpaper

The other day, I shared a somewhat convoluted way to grab the Bing background images and set them as your desktop wallpaper. It involved going into the “view source” code and finding a particular URL. It was possible, just not super easy. <itunes:summary> The other day, I shared a somewhat convoluted way to grab the Bing background images and set them as your desktop wallpaper. It involved going into the “view source” code and finding a particular URL. It was possible, just not super easy. Well, thanks to a comment from Anheledir, I learned of his nifty little program that snags the images for you, all of which he’s saving and sharing on his SkyDrive for our convenience. By using his image grabber service, he’s saving the daily images for both Bing DE (Germany) and Bing US (United States) in two separate galleries. The images still aren’t the correct size to be ideal for desktop wallpaper (which is why we need an “official” version of this program that links to full-sized pics), but they are a lot easier to access this way. </itunes:summary>

The wallpapers from the Russian localized version of Windows 7 have been discovered and posted online for download. And they're gorgeous! These, like the other localized themes we’ve mentioned before, include images from the country which the version is from...and in Russia's case, they are truly visually stunning. There are scenic mountain views, lakes, and of course, varous locales that are covered in snow. There are only 6 wallpapers in this Russian set, but they’re definitely worth checking out.
Where to Find Windows 7 Logon Screen Backgrounds

Recently, I’ve been checking out the different ways to customize my Windows 7 logon screen. There’s this manual registry hack as well as this newer downloadable software program that does the hacking for you. But the only thing that was still making customization a bit of a pain was having to resize the wallpaper itself. You see, the Windows 7 logon screen requires the background to be less than 256K in order for it to work. Luckily for me, David Grossman has put together a useful resource that saves me the trouble of cropping and compressing wallpaper myself. Here on his SkyDrive are tons of images – several of them from the Windows 7 wallpapers themselves – that are already compressed and ready to go. Looks like I’m going to be updating my logon screen background a lot now.
Fleace: Use Flickr Images To Decorate Your Desktop

Here at Channel 10, we’re big fans of John’s Background Switcher for rotating our desktop wallpaper. The software is highly customizable and pulls in images from photo-sharing sites like flickr, Phanfare, smugmug, picasa, and Yahoo image search. But for those that are looking for a lighter and simpler solution, there’s now a new app to try: Fleace.

Fleace, which stands for Flickr-Enabled Automatic Changer for Everyone (ha!) can’t access photos from anywhere except flickr, but that may be just fine with you. You can have the app display wallpaper based on the tags you specify and you can customize a few options like size, layout, and a countdown timer for previewing images. The timer displays an image for a set time while you decide whether or not you want to use it. After applying the wallpaper, you have the option to shut the program down which is great for those of us who don’t like having apps runs in our system tray.

Fleace is compatible with all versions of Windows and is a free download available from here.

(Thanks gHacks)

You can have the app display wallpaper based on the tags you specify and you can customize a few options like size, layout, and a countdown timer for previewing images. The timer displays an image for a set time while you decide whether or not you want to use it. After applying the wallpaper, you have the option to shut the program down which is great for those of us who don’t like having apps runs in our system tray. Fleace is compatible with all versions of Windows and is a free download available from here. (Thanks gHacks) </itunes:summary>

(RED) Wallpapers

You may have noticed (ahem...DellSuperbowl commercial) a new (RED) campaign going on. Microsoft is offering Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED edition. The (RED) edition is enhanced with (PRODUCT) RED wallpapers, gadgets, and a unique screen saver and DreamScene™. When you buy (RED) a portion of the profits goes directly to The Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa, and there’s no extra cost to you. However, some of you may already have a new PC, but want to show your support for the (RED) campaign anyway. You can find some cool, fan-created, unofficial (RED)-inspired wallpapers online here. These were created back in 2007 - long before this current campaign launched. Although nowhere near as good as buying a (RED) PC, at least you are there in spirit! (P.S. You can switch Vista's built-in clock gadget to red, too! Just go into its options!) (via istartedsomething)
