      <title>Open source HPC code Episode 1.2:  IPython computes 150 million digits of Pi in Parallel</title>

<p>IPython (<a shape="rect" href="http://ipython.scipy.org/" shape="rect">http://ipython.scipy.org/</a>) enables parallel computations to be performed interactively.&nbsp; In this screeencast, we show how IPython can be used to study a large number of digits of
 pi in parallel. In particular, we calculate the frequency of all 2 digit sequences in the first 150 million digits of pi on a small cluster running Windows HPC Server 2008.&nbsp; IPython enables this parallel calculation to be performed in a fully interactive manner.<br /><br /><a shape="rect" href="http://ipython.scipy.org/doc/manual/html/parallel/parallel_winhpc.html" shape="rect">Getting started on IPython on Windows HPC Server 2008</a></p>

<p>In this video, Daniel Moth demonstrates features in Visual Studio 2010 that make it easy for developers to debug MPI applications. You can see how easy it is to start using the MPI cluster debugger, which allows developers to easily launch an MPI application
 on multiple nodes, set breakpoints, and examine the application during the run -- both on a local machine or a remote cluster.&nbsp; In addition, the Parallel Patterns Library (PPL) is also shown, demonstrating how MPI applications can be written using both multiple
 nodes and multiple threads.</p>
