Xbox Kinect – It’s Not Just About the Games

We’re only a month away from the launch of Xbox Kinect, and whilst a huge amount has been written about some of the kick ass, motion-controlled games that are coming down the line (Kinect Adventures is definitely my favourite), there’s another really cool feature that hasn’t has as much limelight – live video chat.

Xbox LIVE Video Kinect (to give it its full name) allows you to chat via the Kinect’s video camera with friends who are also using Kinect, or on Windows Live Messenger. It includes an Auto-Zoom Focus which instantly finds you and follows you around the room (if you’re moving about) so you’re always in frame. Kinect’s integrated microphone means that there’s no headset required too.

When you go into the Video Kinect menu, you’ll be shown a list of your friends who have recently been online. Some will also be on Kinect, others on Windows Live Messenger, but you’ll see an integrated list.

Once you’re chatting with a friend, you can choose to watch a video together, which will open up in a separate box on screen – you can choose Movies, Sports, News and Music videos all from the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

Video Chat on the TV used to be the stuff of science fiction, but next month, it’s all yours.
Get the Windows Experience Pack

Have you tried the new Windows Experience Pack yet? Released just last week this free software download lets Windows users customize their PC with new backgrounds, screensavers, and other features for Windows Live Messenger.

Designed primarily for Live Messenger users, this program offers additional personalization options including display pictures, emoticons, and Messenger scenes. You can then coordinate your Messenger avatar with your Windows 7 theme as the Experience Pack lets you create a desktop background featuring your personalized avatar against a “destination” background – like the beach, the mountains, an African safari, a hiking trial, etc.

The avatars are created using a combination of your own photo and a cartoon figure for a mashed creation a bit like those in the famous “Elf Youself” holiday animations.

While this download may seem a little silly to some of us more, err, mature users, you can bet that the kids will get a kick out of it.
MailBrowserBackup: Back Up Your Windows Live Mail

I’ve just come across a new backup utility for Windows Live Mail thanks to Steven Hodson of WinExtra. The program is called MailBrowserBackup, and, as it turns out, you can actually use it to backup a lot more than just your Live Mail. The recently updated .NET 2.0 application also lets you make complete backups of Outlook 2003/2007, Windows Contacts, Windows Live Messenger, Live Messenger Plus!, Internet Explorer Favorites, Windows Calendar, and much more.

When running the program, it will automatically detect your profiles and accounts, allowing you to check or uncheck the boxes of the items you want to backup. And should disaster strike, you can also use the application to restore the backups it creates.

MailBrowserBackup is free software licensed under the GNU GPL v2. You can download it for Windows XP SP2, Vista, and Windows 7 from here.

Get Facebook Updates in Your Windows Live Messenger

You may have heard that Windows Live recently added 20 new web services to their platform, one of which was Facebook. Now you can see Facebook status updates in your “What’s New” feed and your friends can see yours too, assuming you’ve configured the option. <itunes:summary> You may have heard that Windows Live recently added 20 new web services to their platform, one of which was Facebook. Now you can see Facebook status updates in your “What’s New” feed and your friends can see yours too, assuming you’ve configured the option. But one thing you may not have realized is that you can also now see those Facebook updates in your Windows Live Messenger, too. You see, down at the bottom of the IM window, is a miniaturized version of the “What’s New” feed where individual updates scroll by showing you what your friends are up too. Since Facebook is one of the available web services, you should start seeing Facebook updates right here in your Live Messenger window, too. If you haven’t already added the new web activities, you can do so from here. </itunes:summary>

From MSN Italy, there is a cute emoticon pack that’s a lot of fun for those of you who celebrate Christmas. Featuring 10 animated emoticons of Santa, Rudolph and other holiday images, the pack is an easy auto-install for Messenger users. Since I don’t read Italian, the WinVistaClub offers a handy how-to on accessing the site and finding the right links to click. They say to do the following: Click on Scarica Gratis Le Emoticon Natalizie to download the emoticon installer. Run the executable and click Avanti. Remember to uncheck the 2 boxes if you don't want your default search & home page changed, during installation.
Accessing SkyDrive From Windows Live Messenger

In previous versions of Messenger, you may remember a feature called Sharing Folders which let you share files, including photos and videos, with any of your Messenger contacts. Of course, as you may have expected, most people used Sharing Folders to share files during a conversation. That worked well if both parties happened to be online at the same time, but if one was offline, there wasn’t an easy way to send them the files you wanted to share. That’s why, in the new version of Windows Live Messenger, there are now two ways to share files.

If you’re having a conversation with someone, you can go to the Files menu and choose “Send a file or photo.” However, if you would rather make file available online for them to download from SkyDrive (and perhaps make it available to several others at the same time too, even if they are not online), you can go to Files –> Publish Files online from your conversation window.

If you choose that option, you’ll be taken to your SkyDrive on Windows Live where you can upload your file(s) and choose the people you are sharing the files with.

Even if you’re not in a conversation, you can quickly access your SkyDrive from Windows Live Messenger from the “Actions” menu. Just click “View your online files” to be directed to your SkyDrive homepage.

Using SkyDrive with Live Messenger is a great way to share both individual files, photos, or entire photo galleries with your friends and family when you’re chatting online. You can even share files publicly with your whole Windows Live network or the world by sharing them on SkyDrive and choosing those options from the drop-down box. Your shared files will then get posted to everyone’s What’s New feed. It doesn’t get any easier than that.

</itunes:summary>
