First Symon introduces the free tools, which include Hyper-V Server 2012 (http://microsoft.com/hvs), Microsoft iSCSI Software Target 3.3 (http://aka.ms/iSCSITarget), Remote Desktop Connection Manager (RDCMan: http://aka.ms/RDCman), and Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT: http://aka.ms/RSAT).

Next, at [11:55] the team walks through an installation of Hyper-V Server 2012 using Windows 8 Client Hyper-V, taking advantage of the lightweight installation package and small storage footprint. Symon then uses RDCMan to manage a new Hyper-V Server 2012 host and discusses some password management features. Then, Rick talks about the GUIless configuration options used to join the Hyper-V Server to the domain, and also discusses different GUI-based remote management options.

Symon then [16:20] installs the iSCSI Software Target, creates an iSCSI target and virtual disks, and connects both hosts to the target through their iSCSI initiators. Next, the team uses PowerShell to initialize and format the newly created iSCSI disks. The team then [28:25] switches to using RSAT for remote server management of the Hyper-V hosts from a Windows 8 laptop. After connecting to the hosts, they install the Failover Clustering feature and being to build the cluster. After validating the Hyper-V hosts and iSCSI storage, the team ends the demo by creating a Failover Clustering.

    • What is it?: The ability to increase maximum memory to a VM while it is running. (Can also lower Minimum memory)
    • Prerequisites : VM must be using Dynamic Memory
    • Available in previous version of Hyper-V: No
    • What to look out for: Watch available disk space where volume is placed. .BIN file will grow.
    • How it could be better: Currently cannot reduce the amount of memory from a running VM.
    • Powerhell: Get-Vm "VMNAME" | Set-VMMemory -MaximumBytes 2gb
  • [11:56 ] DEMO: Live Snapshot Merging
    • What is it?: A recovery point that saves the state, data, and hardware configuration of a VM without downtime to the VM, but it is NOT a backup
    • Prerequisites : Must be performed before any changes!!!
    • Available in previous version of Hyper-V: No (Downtime was needed for merge)
    • What to look out for: Watch available disk space where volume is placed. .AVHD(X) file will grow until merged.
    • Merging of large files can take a considerable amount of time. You should delete snapshot as soon as you can.
    • Powershell:
      • Remove-VMSnapshot "VMName"
      • Get-VMSnapshot "VMName" | Where-Object {$_.name -eq "SNAPNAME"} | Remove-VMSnapshot

Rob first describes the differences between an upgrade and a migration and explains why a migration is required with a distributed system such as a cluster. Next they discuss the concept of "rolling upgrades" and why they have not been supported since Windows Server 2003 due to their high engineering and test costs. Rob then provides an overview of the Cluster Migration Wizard and how it is used to move roles to the new cluster. Next they briefly describe some other cluster migration paths that do not use the Cluster Migration Wizard, such as SQL and Exchange. 

The conversation then focuses on Hyper-V migration between clusters and different options to move your VMs between different versions. At [11:30] Rob demos a VM migration from a Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster to a Windows Server 2012 cluster. In this demo, all the VMs are running on Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) and we describe how to remap the virtual networks for the VMs when they move to a different set of hosts. Rob first describes the differences between an upgrade and a migration and explains why a migration is required with a distributed system such as a cluster. Next they discuss the concept of "rolling upgrades" and why they have not been supported since Windows Server 2003 due to their high engineering and test costs. Rob then provides an overview of the Cluster Migration Wizard and how it is used to move roles to the new cluster. Next they briefly describe some other cluster migration paths that do not use the Cluster Migration Wizard, such as SQL and Exchange.  The conversation then focuses on Hyper-V migration between clusters and different options to move your VMs between different versions. At [11:30] Rob demos a VM migration from a Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster to a Windows Server 2012 cluster. In this demo, all the VMs are running on Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) and we describe how to remap the virtual networks for the VMs when they move to a different set of hosts. Finally, Rob shows the actual migration and how to minimize the downtime for the VMs while they are transferred to the new cluster.
