Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy, also known as sealed source radiotherapy or
endocurietherapy, is a form of radiotherapy where a radioactive source
is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment. Brachytherapy
is commonly used to treat localized prostate cancer, cervical cancer
and cancers of the head and neck.
For decades, breast
conservation therapy for early-stage breast cancer consisted of a
lumpectomy followed by six weeks of whole breast irradiation. There has
been growing interest in the use of accelerated partial breast
irradiation (APBI), which treats only the tumor cavity and surrounding
tissue.
To shorten the time of treatment and reduce the healthy
tissues exposure to radiation, a new procedure has been developed that
involves a type of brachytherapy, where a radioactive source is
temporarily placed inside the breast in direct contact with the tumor
bed (area where tumor was removed). Breast brachytherapy is a 5-day
radiation therapy alternative pioneered by Dr. Robert Kuske
