Summary: Plug-ins that let Windows Desktop Search index new file types

IFilters were originally introduced with the Indexing Service in Microsoft Windows 2000. Each IFilter is a plug-in that understands the content and properties of a particular filetype. WindowsDesktopSearch can be easily extended to understand new filetypes just by adding an appropriate IFilter - see DesktopSearchIFilters for more details.

IFilters are used by the original Indexing Service, Windows Desktop Search, and Sharepoint Portal Server.
