Summary: Bug reports for InternetExplorerDevToolbar

Please include the operating system, and version of Internet Explorer to help reproduce, along with steps necessary to reproduce. For instance: WinXP Pro SP2 / IE7 Beta2

Toolbar doesn't respect WndProc chain

It appears that the IE Developer Toolbar overwrites the WNDPROC via SetWindowLongPtr for the content window, without passing on dispatched messages to already registered window procedures. This means that the IE Developer Toolbar fails to coexist with other, cooperative toolbars that do respect the custom of invoking the old window procedure when installing a new one. The failure is intermittent because its occurrence depends on the order in which toolbars are loaded (and subsequently register event handlers.) Very annoying and difficult to debug.

Note that subclassing the IE window is the only way to implement certain functionality in IE, such as custom context menu entries.

Toolbar is unable to find a certain DOM object using the arrow pointer

Windows XP Pro SP2, IE 7.0.5730.13, the toolbar works fine at least in most of the web pages I used with it. all but the following: "https://sheilta.apps.openu.ac.il/pls/dmyopt2/sheilta.myop"
this page is in hebrew.
after navigating to the page you need to click the image that contains the following attributes (it is located in the center of the page in an elliptic image like button.

"<A href="javascript:onclick=new_url()">
<IMG onmouseover=" window.status=' אישור'; return true" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true" height="63" alt="" src="https://sheilta.apps.openu.ac.il/ows-img/myop/gifs/enter.gif" width="108" border="0" />
</A>"

after clicking this image the page will display a form. trying to point one on one of the forms inputs using the "select element by click" button brings you to a frame element and not to the actual element.

Thanks

Yaniv

Toolbar will not show up and Install "succeeds"

I'm using Win XP Pro 2002 SP2, IE 7.0.5730.11CO, google toolbar 4.0.1601 and devtoolbar beta3, the installation wass successfull, but the toolbar doesn't appear. I try this in several computers and happens the same.

Beta3 Disable Cookies Minus Sign and Localhost Cookies

I've been using the Developer Toolbar for a couple of weeks and all was working well. I was using the toolbar to turn cookies on/off for cookieless ASP.Net testing. All of a sudden, a minus sybmol (-) started appearing next to Disable Cache when it was unchecked. The symbol didn't bother me too much until I stopped being able to set/read cookies for localhost/127.0.0.1. Cookies work fine for all other web sites.

I've uninstalled all plug-ins, cleared all cache and cookies, reset my browser settings to default, and reset the Internet/Intranet zone settings to Medium. I've restarted my computer and the issue still persists. Cookies still work for Opera, Netscape, and Firefox.

Windows XP PRO SP2, IE 6.0.2900.2180, IE Devbar 1.00.2109.0

azulitoclarito: Found how to fix it:

It seems to me there is a incompatibility between Devbar and Privacy options. I fix it:

1. I disabled cookies in Devbar.
2. In Privacy options (In Spanish: Herramientas/Opciones de Internet/Privacidad. I guess English version would be Tools/Internet Options/Privacy), I choose Block all cookies.
3. Voilà.

I discovered if i launch two iexplorer.exe processes and change Disable cookies option in Devbar, I reproduce the bug. :)

Disable script problems (minus sign and localhost)

I'm suffering the same problem with the minus sign, but with the disable script option, and javascript doesn't work on my local pages with ie. I've tried to change the enable/disable active sripting option on the security zones levels, in the same way as azulclarito, but haven`t solved the problem.
Windows XP PRO SP2, IE 7.0.5730.11, IE Devbar 1.00.2109.0

Beta3 Ruler Disappear

When I open IE window, and make a click in the IE DevToolbar icon, the DOM Explorer appear, I wanted to use the ruler to measure the page's height, and try to minimize the DOM Explorer( at the bottom of the page) to make a good measure and see the height of the page beside the ruler, but in the space on the page that left free the DOM Explorer the ruler disappear. It seems like the ruler were cut in the space where the DOM Explorer was, but when I moved the ruler to the top of the page the ruler appear again.

IE7 7.0.5730.11, WinXP 5.1.2600 SP 2

Beta3 crashes when you click the Select Element By Click button, without first clicking View DOM

IE7 7.0.5730.11, Windows 2003 R2.
If you click the Select Element By Click button, without first clicking View DOM, IE Crashes with: Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close.

DevToolbar Beta 3 Install issue and magnifier bug

A new programmer had the same issue as below except his did install a toolbar button (just not the full toolbar). Clicking the button shows the DOM Viewer which also has all the other features. I had DevToolbar Beta 2 installed and when I installed DevToolbar Beta 3, it worked correctly except now the ruler->magnifier doesn't work. It flashes on but doesn't stay.
Both issues are on WinXP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 and IE 7.0.5730.11

Install "succeeds", toolbar will not show up

In Windows XP Pro 2002 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 and IE 7.0.5730.11CO, the DevToolbar Beta 3 (v. 1.0.2109.0) installer appears to complete successfully, but the toolbar does not appear in the browser or in the toolbar context menu. It does appear in the Manage Add-ons widget, but disabling/enabling it appears to have no effect. Application event viewer shows successful installation with no problems reported. Possibly related: several months ago, for a short time I had used and subsequently uninstalled the Beta 1 toolbar.
I am a usability engineer in the defense industry leading large-scale, Web front-end application development and this toolbar will be of immense use once it's stable. IE is the platform of choice for serious Web applications in a homogenous deployment, but the absence of developer and debugging tools has been a disparaging oversight. My support and encouragement goes out to the DevToolbar development team for narrowing a long-standing gap.

IE 6 Crashes on Certain DOM Heavy Javascript

We have a product which creates grids within the page inline table editing, etc. On the page load, a lot of Javascript is run which builds the DOM out for the specific grid component. While this works without a glitch without the toolbar installed, the toolbar will crash Internet Explorer 6 on at least sp2. When I use the toolbar to disable Javascript, the page will load with no problem; when the script is enabled again, the browser window will crash.

I would prefer to keep the toolbar installed for other development projects; is it possible that you could add the ability to enable/disable the toolbar? The only solution at this point is to uninstall the toolbar.

System -- WinXP SP2, IE 6.0.29 SP2

I've experienced the same issue; only workaround is to uninstall the toolbar. Noticed on two separate systems, both running WinXP SP2 + IE 6.0.2900.2180. One of these is a VPC image supplied by Microsoft:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2007/03/20/ie6-vpc-refresh-now-available.aspx

Win 2000, IE 6, Toolbar Version 1.00.1517.0

I didn't save the original installer on my PC and ran it straight from the downloaded file dialogue.

Now when I try and uninstall to reinstall the latest version I get an error that it can't find

C:\Documents and Settings\martin.MEDIA\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CXUZOTUJ\iedevtbar1.msi

Is this installer still available anywhere?

WinXP Pro SP2 / IE 7.0.5730.11

Toolbar won't even install at all. The installer hangs just before getting to the end of the progress bar and msiexec.exe maxes out the CPU and must be killed via the task manager. I've tried waiting several minutes but it is completely hung. Obviously critical, and I really need this working ASAP.

IE 7 plus yui-ext framework confuses IE Toolbar Beta 3 or 2

yui-ext (http://www.jackslocum.com) is a very useful javascript library by Jack Slocum which extends the Yahoo! User interface library. If you use the layout functionality you end up building pages that totally confuse the finding and outlining functions in IE Toolbar. An example page that shows the problem is Jack's Documentation Center (http://www.yui-ext.com/deploy/yui-ext/docs/).
*If you launch the toolbar and check find element by click, you'll and run your mouse over the page, you'll see nothing highlights at all.
*If you click to select something, a outline box may appear but it's offset from the item selected.
*The dom explorer tree view looks correct but selecting elements in the tree also doesn't cause them to be outlined in the browser.
*Using the outline menu items also don't outline anything.

These problems, make the toolbar a lot less useful for this kind of application. This problem is visible with either beta 3 or beta 2 of the toolbar but only appears with IE 7 (version 7.0.5730.11). Using IE 6, the toolbar works much better on these pages. I'm using WinXP SP2 and the latest updates for all these tests.

In general, IE Toolbar has been a great help, but since we've upgraded to IE 7 it's much less useful on our application.

View Cookie Information causes a javascript error. For the current page
- http://channel9.msdn.com/wiki/wikiedit.aspx?topic=Channel9.InternetExplorerDevToolbarBugs -
The error is:
		 Line: 3
		 Char: 111
		 Error: An invalid character was found in text content.
		 Code: 0
		 URL: file:/// ... /Temp/CookieInfo-{number}.xml

Tracking the specified character with a text editor finds an ampersand before a pound character. Manually removing the ampersand character and refreshing the display gets rid of the error, and changes the end of the displayed URL from Channel9.InternetExplorerDevToolbarBugs to Channel9.InternetExplorerDevToolbarBugs#x0000;
It appears that the code that generates the xml data to display the cookie information is incorrectly escaping the pound character. I have not tested with a url that actually contains an anchor. The rest of the displayed cookie information is not affected.

IE Toolbar Beta 3

January 10, 2007

1. Trace Style Ineffective
Trace Style has no effect whatsoever. System: Windows Vista RC2, IE7
Seconded; Windows Server 2003 / IE6 6.0.3790.1830
2. Irritating sounds
On clicking anywhere on the "Attributes" and "Current Styles" pane in the DOM Explorer, "pings" or system exclamation sounds can be heard. System: Windows Vista RC2, IE7
3. Local Validator behaves weirdly.
Suppose I am creating a local HTML file, and testing it in IE. I have no other internet explorer window open. When I ask IE Dev Toolbar to validate "Local HTML", it opens a new window (as it should for Internet Zone in Windows Vista), but that window has two tabs open. One of them ends up saying "This document cannot be validated because".. the protocol is not supported. (The protocol is showing up empty). The other tab correctly validates the page. If I close any tab during the loading process, the other tab invariably shows up "Cannot validate.."
The same is true for Local CSS validation as well. This behaviour cannot be reproduced if a seperate IE7 Window in the Internet Zone is open.
4. Getting "Object dosen't support this property or method" occurred in iexplore.exe 1328 when dev toolbar loads. System: Windows Vista RTM, IE7
5. Spontaneous chrashes
IE crashes without any error when viewing certain websites. Frontpage of Channel 9 at time of writing. Windows Server 2003 / IE6 6.0.3790.1830
Seconded; Windows XP Pro SP2 / IE7 7.0.5730.11
6. I have script debugging enabled in IE 6, WinXP Pro. Every time a page is loaded I get a bunch of debug prompts telling me that selectorFactory is null and suggesting that I pick a debugger.
When there's an error on page you usually see a "Do you want to debug?" question, and debug selection dialog then; here however there are no page errors and the debugger selection dialog comes up right away. If you do launch debugging, it goes to the contents of some sub-function SelectorAPI function/class.
Turning off developer toolbar components in options solves the problem.

7. I have tried the IE Dev Toolbar while viewing "CSS Zen Garden" homepage. If you "View>Class and ID Information", you will notice that the classes and IDs for the sidebar remain in a fixed position even if you resize the browser window. In addition, I think it would be very usefull if the IE Dev Toolbar offered the possibility to "Outline Block Elements" as does the Firefox version.

I also have a FEATURE REQUEST to improve the overall visibility when using Block Element Outlines and when viewing Class and ID info. Sometimes the Outlines or Class and ID info may be superimposed making it difficult to distinguish or read. The Firefox version of the Dev Toolbar partially adresses this inconvenience by using different Outline colors. I would like to suggest what I believe would be a more efficient way to distinguish elements: I would propose using LAYERS. The <body>...<\body> would correspond to the top layer, then going down one level in the DOM tree, the corresponding DIVs in that level would be revealed along with their Oulines, then you could go down one more level in the DOM tree to the immediate descendants, and so on. Alternatively, it might be nice to be able to select an element individually in the DOM Explorer and see the Outline, Class or ID info show for just that element.
8. Repeated sequence of System Event Log errors as follows: (System: WinXP Pro SP2 / IE7 RTM)
Event Source: SideBySide Event ID: 32 Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT could not be found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.

Event Source: SideBySide Event ID: 59 Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.CRT. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.

Event Source: SideBySide Event ID: 59 Generate Activation Context failed for C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar\SelectorObjectAPI.dll. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully.

9. When running as a standard user the toolbar is only available as an explorer bar. It doesn't appear to be registered in the list of Toolbars.

10. When loading any page in IE6 (6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519) on XP Pro sp2 Toolbar (1.00.2109.0) "Object doesn't support this property or method" from line 701 collSelectors.item(i).SetQuirksMode(true);
Seconded: XP SP2 IE 7.0.5730.11 Toolbar 1.00.2109.0 Happens editing this very page among others.
Object does not support this property or method (at the indicated line below)

		    function [ParseDoc(doc)]
		    {
		        var aRules = [GatherRulesFromDoc(doc);]
		        collSelectors = parser.Parse(aRules);

		        // Set quirks mode if necessary
		        if("BackCompat" == doc.compatMode)
		        {
		            for(var i = 0; i < collSelectors.Count; i++)
		            {
		 --->>          [collSelectors.item(i).SetQuirksMode(true);]
		            }
		        }

		    }

11. Windows XP Service Pack 2, IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519, Toolbar 1.00.2109.0. Add the IE Developer Toolbar icon to the IE toolbar and pre-configure the IE Developer Toolbar as undocked. Close all IE instances. Open IE, open the developer toolbar using the icon on the IE toolbar. Close the developer toolbar, then close IE. You will receive the following message:

DDE Server Window: iexplore.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x01603666" referenced memory at "0x7ded518c". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

OK

Does not happen on IE 7.0.5730.11.

IE Toolbar Beta 2 02/08/2006

Misc > About should show "1.00.1219.0" or greater.

Please check Beta 1 bugs, and copy them to this section upon confirmation that they still exist, and renumber.

1. (Previously 6) Cache issues:
* "Disable Cache" isn't working with IE6 and isn't persistant: (1) I'm still seeing all files cached in the window I choose "Disable cache" checked. (2) When I open a new window by clicking the IE icon, the setting is lost.

_ Still an issue (1.00.1219.0) - IE6 and IE7 Beta2/WinXP Pro SP2. _

2. (Previously 28) Menu items disappear - 1.00.1219.0 on IE7 Beta2/WinXP, the menu items on the toolbar disappear when opening a new window, and the toolbar has to be hidden and reshown for them to come back.
This bug has just appeared (and often) on my XP SP2 laptop since upgrading from the latest IE7 beta to the new release candidate version (7.0.5700.6) - devtoolbar version is 1.00.1517.0

3. (Previously 16) DOM Explorer's HTML tree empties when the page's DOM is updated in some cases. To reproduce:
* Go to http://cdn.eyewonder.com/100125/750285/853575/iebugdomexplorer.html or http://cdn.eyewonder.com/100125/750285/853577/iebugdomexplorer.html
* Click "View DOM" on Developer toolbar
* Click where it says "Open" for the first link or rollover "Rollover to play" for the second
Notice DOM Explorer's HTML tree disappears. You can bring it back by closing DOM Explorer and re-opening it, but if you do another interaction with the ad, the tree disappears again

_ Still an issue (1.00.1219.0) - IE6 and IE7 Beta2/WinXP Pro SP2. _

4. (Previously 19) Backspace stops working on pages when attributes are edited.
* Open up the edit page for this wiki (http://channel9.msdn.com/wiki/wikiedit.aspx?topic=Channel9.InternetExplorerDevToolbarBugs)
* Click "View DOM"
* Navigate to BODY
* add attribute id and give it some random characters, press enter
* Click into the textarea (the one I'm typing in right now) and try to click backspace (it doesn't work). You can type characters, but not backspace.
You have to close DOM Explorer for it to start working.

_ On IE7 Beta2, this same sequence causes the page to go back to previous page, even if focus is in textarea (1.00.1219.0 in IE7 Beta2/WinXP Pro SP2)_

5. (Previously 17) We need to be able to find an element with only a portion of it's ID. For instance, if there is a DIV with id myBanner414104143204923, you can't find it just by putting ID "myBanner". Firefox allows this. This makes it harder to find an element if part of it's ID is a randomly generated # or something of that nature.

Suggestion:
		 [ElementIdClass|Name] contains [             ]

_ Still not implemented on 1.00.1219.0 in IE7 Beta2/WinXP Pro SP2_

6. (Previously 18) tabs and newlines appear in attributes (such as onload) and appear as empty boxes. For comparison, Firefox's DOM Inspector replaces the newlines with spaces in the normal view, but when you copy the text to clipboard, it contains the newlines (go to Javascript tab in FF Dom Inspector). Test with the following code:

		 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
		 <html>
		 <body>
		 <script type="text/javascript">
		 document.body.onload = function() {

var i = 0;
i++;
}
		 document.write("Added onload function");
		 </script>
		 </body>
		 </html>

_ Still affects 1.00.1219.0 in IE7 Beta2/WinXP Pro SP2_

7. Win2k/IE6 - After installing the toolbar, IE sessions don't exit. To reproduce - Start IE. Exit IE. Look at Task List/Processes. Repeat... I had 23 iexplore.exe processes that I had to manually shutdown.

8. XPProSP2/IE6.0.2900.2180 - Installed the .msi and toolbar did not show in the View->Toolbars menu. Tried re-install of the Toolbar and IE itself in multiple orders with no effect. There seems to be no GroupPolicy or Registry restrictions prohibiting this behavior. (All patches and updates installed as of 2/20/2005.)

Go to Tools|Internet Options|Advanced, in the "Browsing" category, find "Enable third-party browser extensions" and check it. Close all IE windows. Open IE and the toolbar is available. (12/2/2006)

9. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature request. When displaying forms in the DOM inspector, it is not possible to see values in input fields. e.g. The text in a text field or the selected option in a select field. As these are just attributes in the tag, I can't see why these wouldn't be visible in the Attributes pane.

10. (Previously 3) Ctrl + r Used to Refresh the page like F5. But now it opens the Ruler. Very annoying. Would be great to use the Dev Toolbar without shortcut support.
We changed the keystroke to be less annoying in beta 1 refresh - jvarga
_ There are still 2 issues. 1) You changed the hotkey to SHIFT-R but that is a highly utilized key stroke. Please consider making the Ruler hotkey something the end-user can define. 2) Even with the toolbar disabled, the Ruler still appears when your hotkey is pressed. _
The Shift-R combination makes it particularly difficult to fill out forms. Perhaps use Ctrl-Shift-R, or make it configurable. Also, the response to this hot-key seems intermittent - sometimes it displays the ruler, sometimes it doesn't.

11. XPProSP2/IE6.0.2900.2180 - Toolbar does not play well with Norton Internet Security 2007 toolbar although it seems ok with Windows Live toolbar installed. IE gives a consistent critical error when closed, windows error reporting offers no solutions. I have the dump files if required, also uninstalling either toolbar allows IE to close without error as normal (tested this just to make sure it was a toolbar conflict, but not a long term solution as I need both to work at the same time).

12. When using the "Select element by click" feature under Right-To-Left scenerios (<body dir='rtl'> ), the blue frames ("cursor") sometimes appear not where they should appear.

IE Toolbar Beta 1 04/11/2005

Please mark fixed the ones no longer affecting the Feb. 8 update. Copy any that still affect Feb. 8 update to the Beta 2 section.

1. After installing the Dev toolbar on Vista, which has IE7, and after restart the system cant login. Check http://www.msvistablog.net/news.php?item.45 for more information
I don't have enough information to repro this and have not heard any similar reports. - jvarga

2. The toolbar has crashed my IE6 SP1 on a Windows XP SP2 Toshiba M30 laptop twice when closing an IE window. All windows will get closed on crash. This is a fresh install of Windows. The message I get is "IE has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close. The following add-on was running when this problem occurred: File "IEDevToolbar.dll". The error in Event Log is: Event ID 1000 - "Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module iedevtoolbar.dll, version 1.0.912.0, fault address 0x000143c0." The following Add-Ons were running at the time (other than standard XP ones): SDHelper.dll, AcroIEHelper.dll, IEFlash.dll, Flash8.ocx, npjpi142.dll, wmp.dll. No exact pattern matched yet, but a possible cause is Java.

3. If you have a div with an expression height, like this:
height:expression(document.body.clientHeight - 240);
...IE will crash when you turn on Outline > Outline DIV tags

4. To Find an element by ID, we need the entire ID to search for an element. In comparison, in Mozilla Firefox's DOM Inspector, you only need a portion of the ID. IE is a lot harder to debug pages where unique numbers are added to the end of an element's ID when it's generated. It also makes finding the element a bit harder even in the case you know the exact ID.

5. Cache issues:
* "Disable Cache" isn't working with IE6 and isn't persistant: (1) I'm still seeing all files cached in the window I choose "Disable cache" checked. (2) When I open a new window by clicking the IE icon, the setting is lost.

_ Still an issue (1.00.1017) - IE6 and IE7 Beta2/WinXP Pro SP2. _

6. The Dev Toolbar crashes IE consistently with Merant PVCS version manager 8.0.0.3 (Merant VM web client 8.0.0.3 (Build 550)) when I click the "Cancel" button in any of PVCS's pop up windows. I'm running IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519 on XP SP2 with Java JRE 1.4.2_08 (PVCS uses Java applets in its UI). The Dev Toolbar has to be visible. Correction: this happens even when the toolbar is not visible. I select a file to check out, then click cancel in the pop-up. The dialog that comes up says that:

		    Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to close.
		    The following add-on was running when this problem occured:
		        File: [IEDevToolbar.dll]
		        Company Name: (Not verified) Microsoft Corporation
		        Description: IE Developer Toolbar

Reproducible'''''': Always. I have sent the error report after the crash on each occasion, most recently while composing this message (~1740 EDT 2005-10-10). After sending, I get "The instruction at 0x7d54b398 referenced memory at 0x000000cc. The memory could not be read." Additionally, "occurred" is misspelled in the IE add-on problem dialog. Feel free to contact me at the e-mail address associated with this account if any additional information is needed, and thanks for developing the Dev Toolbar. It is well on its way to becoming an indispensable development tool.

7. Clearing the browser cache using Misc > Clear Browser Cache also clears browser cookies using IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519. Steps to repro:

* Login to Channel 9, selecting the remember me option.
* Select Misc > Clear Browser Cache
* Close the browser
* Open the browser and navigate to Channel 9, and you are no longer logged in.

8. Mousing over menu items on the DevToolBar has an 'outdent' hover effect which is different from hovering over the usual menu items in IE (File, Edit, View, etc.). This is visually annoying.

9. Clicking on the Show Ruler menu item when the Ruler window is open closes the Ruler window. Clicking on the View DOM menu item when the DOM Explorer pane is open does not close the DOM Explorer pane. This lack of consistency is irritating as I keep trying to unsuccessfully hit the View DOM button to dismiss the DOM Explorer pane.
I think we've made this more consistent - jvarga

10. Installing Dev toolbar on a pc with VS2003, SQL Express, VS Express leads to some crashes on third-party applications like Reflector, CommandBar(www.codeproject.com/csharp/CommandBar.asp). It can be solved by repairing the .net 2.0 framework from appWiz.cpl.
Unable to repro this - jvarga

11. Resizing the window doesn't act like one would expect it to, as it leaves aliases of the previously rendered window in the space outside the resize area. Perhaps adding the ability to just draw a frame overtop of the current window showing the frame size would be cool too.
This should be fixed - jvarga

12. Granted this is aesthetic, but it's not very visually appealing at this point. Some icons would be a welcome addition in order to be more familiar with repetitive tasks.
Working on it - jvarga

13. After installing and using with IE7 B1, various images just disappear. I'm not sure if this is a symptom of IE7 B1 or the DevToolbar. As a note, I never had this problem before installing the Toolbar, so I think it may be related. Note that on pages, I'll have 4 of 5 images disappear, they generally seem to be the larger images. The bug seems to happen more frequently after I view an image report.
Unable to repro... can you get me more information? - jvarga

14. When viewing an image report on a page with an IFrame that contains a page with a query string with multiple parts (and maybe in other situations too), the toolbar generates invalid XML, because it does not turn the &'s in the query string into & entities. I.e., my XML says: <document><name>http://localhost/myapp/mypage.aspx?f=1757021701&p=6&w=50</name>.. when it should say ...&amp;p=6&amp;w=50... in the middle there.
Unable to repro this... can you point me at a sample I can run on? - jvarga

15. DOM Explorer's HTML tree empties when the page's DOM is updated in some cases. To reproduce:
* Go to http://cdn.eyewonder.com/100125/750285/853575/iebugdomexplorer.html or http://cdn.eyewonder.com/100125/750285/853577/iebugdomexplorer.html
* Click "View DOM" on Developer toolbar

Notice DOM Explorer's HTML tree disappears. You can bring it back by closing DOM Explorer and re-opening it, but if you do another interaction with the ad, the tree disappears again

16. We need to be able to find an element with only a portion of it's ID. For instance, if there is a DIV with id myBanner414104143204923, you can't find it just by putting ID "myBanner". Firefox allows this and even to find again beyond that point. This makes it harder to find a DIV in Internet Explorer, especially if part of it's ID is a Unique ID and we would have to look at the source to know it's full ID. We can't always rely on being able to click on it.

17. tabs and newlines appear in attributes and appear as empty boxes. For instance, look at the <BODY> element on this wiki edit page (http://channel9.msdn.com/wiki/wikiedit.aspx?topic=Channel9.InternetExplorerDevToolbarBugs) and see that onload attribute appears as function "fillup" that has boxes after the first bracket.

18. Backspace stops working on pages when attributes are edited.
* Open up the edit page for this wiki (http://channel9.msdn.com/wiki/wikiedit.aspx?topic=Channel9.InternetExplorerDevToolbarBugs)
* Click "View DOM"
* Navigate to BODY
* add attribute id and give it some random characters, press enter
* Click into the textarea (the one I'm typing in right now) and try to click backspace (it doesn't work). You can type characters, but not backspace.
You have to close DOM Explorer for it to start working.

19. Pages with <select> tags seem to cause problems with the updated Ruler (Nov. 1) which were not present in the previous release:
* The ruler does not appear overtop of select boxes (as in the previous release), but rather undeneath, thereby making it impossible to read (reproducable anywhere with a <select> tag).
* On some pages with <select>s, toggling the ruler causes a select box to turn black. A small colored area appears at the left section of the blacked-out <select> which appears to be a miniscule thumbnail of the entire page. The ruler will then only work within that select box. This problem has been hard for me to reproduce (it shows up on a locally hosted page, but on tried to replicate it, I couldn't continuously).

21. Using Outline any element, I selected IFRAME and the color. It then proceeded to render the "red outline" incorrectly. We have nested IFRAMES (and IFRAME inside an IFRAME inside an IFRAME), the inner IFRAMES are outlined in the top left corner of the screen rather than in their correct posisition in the page.
Email me paul.kinlan@gmail.com if you need further insight.

22. Typing an uppercase 'r' brings up the ruler. This is especially noticeable when editing this WIKI and I tried to type IFrAME in bug 21! :)
email me paul.kinlan@gmail.com if you need further insight.

23. For some reason once I install the toolbar, I can't get the ruler to work at all. The ruler window comes up, and I can select all of the options in that window, but the ruler doesn't want to be drawn at all. I don't even get crosshairs. A little insight into how it is implemented would help me trouble-shoot this as well.

24. The Outlining does not seem to be applied on IFrames that have been refreshed (reloaded) after an initial outlining:
* Load page that has an IFrame in it.
* Turn "Outline Table Cells" on, for instance. IFrame's tables are outlined.
* Refresh the IFrame (not the entire page).
* IFrame's tables are not outlined.
* Turn "Outline Table Cells" off and on again. IFrame's tables are still not outlined.

25. Visiting the following page and scrolling half way down (with the mouse wheel) crashes IE6: http://forums.asp.net/1020148/ShowPost.aspx
Email me channel9ATNOSPAMdavidkean.net if you need more information.

26. After installing, the toolbar doesn't show. When clicking on this item in View | Toolbars, the menu item remains unchecked. Nothing happens, no error message. Clicking on "IE DOM Explorer" opens an empty window. XP Pro SP2 + IE 6. The other toolbars on this system work fine except the Yahoo! Toolbar which has the same problem. I have tried *everything* I could think of in order to fix this. To no avail (see thread titled "Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar invisible" on the mvp.internetexplorer private newsgroup. There's another MVP having the same problem. Since I'm familair with BHOs and COM, if I could have access to the source code, I would be ready to spend some time debugging this problem on my system (the problem doesn't occur on other systems in my lab). email: patrick.philippot@mvps.org.

27. The View Cookie information is misleading at best. It seems to display all persistent cookies which have a common domain, (e.g. when my web page is matt.example.com, it will show cookies saved in the cache from page1.example.com and page2.example.com) even if those cookies aren't actually set with domain=".example.com". On top of that, all session cookies are shown as having a domain of the actual hostname (e.g. matt.example.com) when any or all of the cookies are actually set as with a shared domain (e.g. ".example.com")

28. With 1.00.1017 on IE7 Beta2/WinXP, the menu items on the toolbar disappear when opening a new window, and the toolbar has to be hidden and reshown for them to come back.

29. Using "Beta 2 of IE Developer Toolbar" on Windows XP SP2, when selecting "Show image dimensions" or "Show image file sizes" from "images menu", IE will crash.

30. If you make a table with width 100%, then turn on outline cells, it shows a open square on the far right cell instead of completely surrounding table.

31. Using IEDevToolBar Beta 2 with IE6.1 on XP SP2: After installing the "Google Accelerator bar, the IE toolbar context menu reverses the two: To enable "Developer Toolbar" the "Google Accelerator" entry must be checked. (Since that, too, is beta code, it's probably Google's problem, but I found your wiki first.)

32. IE 6, Windows XP SP2. I can not set the z-index order to anything other than a negative whole number or a postive whole number. I would like to remove the z-index from an HTML element, but can't set it to 0, "auto", or null. The MSDN Html Reference instructs "To remove the z-index set it to null."

33. IE 6 (6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519) on WinXP Pro SP2 (norwegian). After installing devtoolbar beta 2, Internet Explorer is useless. I cannot load any page at all. Any page I try to load freeze after while trying to load and render it. I have tried to clean cache and reload, no luck. I had beta 1 of the toolbar and it worked swell (can it be re-downloaded from somewhere?). IE works ok after uninstalling the toolbar :(

34. 14-June-2006 WinXP SP2 patched up to 14-June-06, IE 6 (6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519) Toolbar 1.00.1517.0. The "View DOM" button does not do anything; no window pops up, nor does any error message. It worked in the previous version of the DevToolBar. Have tried uninstalling and re-installing devtoolbar several times. Is there any way to download the previous version?

35. 12-October-2006 WinXP SP2 patched up to 12-October-2006, IE 6 (6.0.2900.2180.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519) Toolbar Beta2 published 3/21/2006. (I had to uninstall the toolbar, so that's the only version information I have) -- I downloaded the toolbar to try to dig into MS CRM pages to find some of the controls so I could edit them in code -- but with the toolbar installed (both with the toolbar displayed and not displayed), opening the CRM site caused IE to abort.

36. When I try to edit an existing value of the "float (css)" property in the middle column of DOM Explorer I get an error message saying "Invalid property value". If I add "styleFloat" as another property it will allow override the existing "float (css)" property, but we shouldn't have to do that.

37. 22 Nov 2006 Running XP Media Center Edition SP2 with IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp.050622-1524. Screen Resolution @ 1680*1050.

When trying to use the ruler it behaves as in item 23 above, dialog appears but no crosshairs. When using the DOM view, the outlines do not line up with the items on the page so you can not tell what you are working on. It is not even close, if IE is not full screen, the outline can be outside the IE window.

38. 18 Dec 2006 Running W2KSP4 but should apply to any version. I have the latest version of the IE dev toolbar
The DOM Explorer is a great tool saving me a lot of time. Thanks to add the following to save even more time.
Once a node is selected in the left tab or a property picked in the middle tab, add a contextual menu to copy the <<absolute>> (not relative) location to the clipboard. The goal is to add the corresponding instruction in my Javascript code.
E.g. I select document.frmMap.WinHeight at left and the property "value" which has currently a value of 100 then "document.frmMap.WinHeight.value=100" is copied to the clipboard and I can reuse it in my JS.

2007-02-13 Show Ruler not working - menu appears but no crosshair, no ruler

*Win XP Pro Sp2 (2600.xpspsp2gdr.050301-1519)
*Internet Explorer 7 (7.0.6000.16414)
*Toolbar Beta 3 (1.00.2109.0)
*Of note: Works fine for the administrator win login, but not for a different login (even if that login is added to the administrators group)
*see also: 23 & 37 above
*UPDATE: here's a clue ... if, after clicking "show ruler" and having the ruler menu appear, I then cause some portion of the screen to paint ( such as opening the start menu ) ... the crosshair and ruler will appear

2007-02-21 Dev Toolbar non-functional and only appearing in one place on Vista 64bit

*Vista 6000 64bit
*IE 7.0.6000.16386
*Toolbar Beta 3
Install toolbar, then log off-on, or power cycle. IE Dev Toolbar shown in expanding list next to Tools in upper right. Attempting to start IE Dev Toolbar from there seems to have no effect, but Discuss, Research, and Fiddler work as expected. Do not see it from menu bar View - Explorer Bar (but do see Discuss and Research). Looking through upper right Tools - Toolbars - Customize I do see IE Dev Toolbar under Current toolbar buttons. Has anybody gotten the IE Dev Toolbar to work on 64bit Vista?

Yes, sort of. I have Vista 6000 32bit running on an Athlon X2 64-bit CPU (not my idea), also IE 7.0.6000.16386, Toolbar Beta 3. Identical circumstance: I was only able to get the successfully installed toolbar to appear by using Tools - Toolbars - Customer to add it to the standard toolbar buttons. It is also listed in Manage Add-ons, but nowhere else.

2007-03-08 Internet Explorer 6 WinXP SP2 crashes (The memory could not be read..) at calling JavaScript Function addEvent()

Here's the code section:

<script type="text/javascript">
		  var listMenu = new [FSMenu('listMenu',] true, 'display', 'block', 'none');
		  listMenu.animations[listMenu.animations.length] = [FSMenu.animFade;]
		  listMenu.animations[listMenu.animations.length] = [FSMenu.animSwipeDown;]
		  var arrow = null;
		  if (document.createElement && document.documentElement) {
		   arrow = document.createElement('span');
		   [arrow.appendChild(document.createTextNode('>'));]
		   arrow.className = 'subind';
		  }
		  // this function causes ie to crash ==========================================
		  addEvent(window, 'load', new Function('listMenu.activateMenu("listMenuRoot", arrow)'));

		  var main_menuLM = new FSMenu('main_menuLM', true, 'display', 'block', 'none');
		  main_menuLM.animations[main_menuLM.animations.length] = [FSMenu.animFade;]
		  main_menuLM.animations[main_menuLM.animations.length] = [FSMenu.animSwipeDown;]
		  var arrow = null;
		  if (document.createElement && document.documentElement) {
		   arrow = document.createElement('span');
		   [arrow.appendChild(document.createTextNode('>'));]
		   arrow.className = 'subind';
		  }
		  // this function causes ie to crash ===========================================
		  addEvent(window, 'load', new Function('main_menuLM.activateMenu("main_menu", arrow)'));
		 </script>
