The operation system treats a physical printer soley as a destination of a print job, which from generated and via a system "Printer" delivers, which is termed "printer" in the rest of this article.
The most viewable part of a printer is a print queue. It is managed by the printer manager or the "printer" folders in the windows 95-style user interfaes. The printer driver is the interface on the printer, which generates print-jobs via the printer domain-controller from applications. The A-path of a printer consists of system-code of multiple layers, which culminates with a port monitor.
The port monitor is the interface on the physical printer after the down-stream termination of a printer system and the print monitor is responsible for the data of a print job transfers over of the physical printer independend from the connection if available. In the case of bi-directional printers the print monitor has been responsible for data to the physical printer and from the printer transfered. It give these connection and the physical printer where errors occur. It is the job of the print monitor to report these errors.
The spooler does not query the state of a physical printer, on which a printer is connected. Instead the success of a print job is decided by the state of the physical printer on the time the job is despooled over the port monitor. If many, many error occurs during this process, the error is announced by the prot monitor and is recorded in the status-information of the print job. The spooler is in turn returning an appropriate error information to the print queue.
If the print queue is empty, therefor printer is not notifying system the state. In this state will be ready to accept of the printer of print jobs. If the printer is going out to an error, it is for example assumed that you mark valid off-line. The operation system considers the ready, print-jobs accepting printer, even if lock, if it cannot transfered for a specific reason to the physical printer printer. Such a circumstance error-condition is included in the operationg system, which must be solved by the user. It is valid that an error is not considered reportable to an application, to successfully lock the print job of the print queue.
Determining the state of a physical printer
A principle terrain must be truth to aquire the state of a physical printer: the spooler must try to send a print job to the physical printer. This is the only time reporting the state of the printer from the print monitor. Furthermore the most significant information can be provided in the status member of a JOB INFO structure for the specific print job, because some port monitor has directly specified this value.
