I'm doing a command-line build of a large tree, and it's suddenly 10 times slower than what I would expect. What's going on?

This problem is often related to the antivirus software running on our machines -- ""ETrust"" Antivirus (also sometimes referred to as Inoculan).

At this time, there doesn't appear to be an incredibly crisp answer or fix for this problem. Some folks are reporting that installing the latest version of ""ETrust"" Antivirus will fix the problem. Other folks recommend excluding certain directories and processes from the realtime monitor.
