Remote Printer not installed

Terminology:

* Machine to which printer is installed is called host
* Other machine, i.e. machine you want to print from is called client

Debugging Steps

* Ensure your environment meets PrinterSharingSystemRequirements

Steps on host machine

* Verify Printer is shared
* Go to the host machine and open Windows Printer UI (Start>Control Panel>Printers)
* Right click on the printer
* You should see a right click menu item with OneCare icon on it.
* If the menu item says Stop Sharing, your printer is has been shared
* If the menu item says Start Sharing, click on it to start sharing
* If the menu item says More Information, click on it to find out why your printer is not being shared

* Ensure Firewall is allowing Printer Sharing on host machine
* On the host machine, open OneCare UI
* If the firewall state says just "ON", it is good. If it says "On - Public", OneCare firewall is currently blocking printer sharing traffic because you are connected to at least one network that had been classified as public. To fix this
* Main UI>Change Settings>Firewall Tab>Configure Firewall
* Click on Change Location. If you are connected to only one network, it will be sufficient. Else, it will open network connections tab, in which you can select each network you are connected to and reclassify. Printer Sharing will only work if all the network you are connected to are classified as Home or Work
* Verify File & Printer Sharing rule is checked ON. Main UI>Change Settings>Firewall Tab>Configure Firewall. Ensure that checkbox for "File & Printer Sharing" is checked.

* Verify that file sharing is working on the host machine from host machine
* Login to host machine
* Open a command windows
* Start>run>type cmd.exe on XP
* Windows logo>type cmd.exe in the search box and select it
* Type hostname. This will get you the name of the machine.
* Type "start ." in the command window. This will open Windows Explorer
* In the explorer Windows, type \\ followed by hostname that you got previously. e.g. if you got STEVE-PC as host name, type \\STEVE-PC. See if that resolves and you see the printer shared on this machine. When your prinrer shows up, click on the printer to see queued documents for printer to show up

Steps on client machine

* Ensure Firewall is allowing Printer Sharing on client machine
* Repeat same steps as above to confirm client machine's firewall is also allowing printer sharing

* Refresh Printer List and View Status
* Open OneCare UI >Change Settings>Printer Sharing Tab
* Click on Refresh Printer List and View Status
* It will produce a report that can help troubleshoot further

* If host machine is not even listed in the report, please ensure that both host and client are part of same OneCare Circle i.e. linked to same Live ID and both machines have internet connectvity

* If host machine is listed as unavailable, please ensure that
* host machine is actually turned on
* host machine is connected to same physical router as client machine
* Verify that OneCare inter machine communication is working, you can do that by following
* Ensure one of the machine is a OneCare Hub machine
* On the non-hub machine turn off phishing filter (Open Internet Explorer, Tools>Phishing Filter>Turn off website checking)
* OneCare should turn yellow on the non hub machine. Same action item should appear in OneCare Circle view on the hub machine
* Turn on phishing filter from the hub machine. It should turn on the phishing filter on non hub machine and non hub machine should not have phishing filter action item anymore

* Verify file sharing is working on host by trying to access from client machine
* Login to client machine
* Open Windows Explorer
* In the explorer Windows, type \\ followed by hostname of host that you got previously. e.g. if you got STEVE-PC as host name, type \\STEVE-PC. You may be prompted for supplying username and password. If you host machine is Windows XP, type "Guest" as username and black password. If your host machine is Vista, you need to specify a username/password that is valid for your Vista machine. See if that resolves and you see the printer shared on this machine. When your printer shows up, click on the printer to see queued documents for printer to show up

* If the printer is listed, and there is no clear reason other than "Install failed", try installing the printer manually and see if that works

What if nothing works?

* Collect support log from both host and client machine
* Support log can be created by running c:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\OneCareSupport.exe.
