The Signal Episode 12: BMWs, Breathalyzers, and Kong

MIX08 is next week, and sadly, this is the last episode of The Signal. Mike and Thomas start by talking about real code in keynotes, the special screening of The King of Kong, and Steve Wiebe’s Donkey Kong world record attempt. You’ll hear a bit about what it takes to coordinate a record breaking attempt and why we have to respect the chain of custody. Then, after Thomas reminisces about his mobile breathalyzer experience, we call Jimmy Kim from Nexon/Innotive (at 3:00am in the morning!). Jimmy talks about his panel and session at MIX08, how WPF, Silverlight, and XAML make it easy to target multiple clients, how clients like BMW, Hyundai, and Nike need “one source, multi-use” for their assets, why he worked for six months to tweak BMW’s user interface, how design impacts the bottom line, and his session at MIX08 titled Effective User Interfaces in WPF and Silverlight.

As mentioned, this is the last episode of The Signal for MIX08.
The Signal is back with another Earth-shattering episode! Thomas and Mike chat about the design and experience of Wrigley’s 5 Gum, and Mike reviews the Helvetica documentary just released on DVD. Paul Dawson from Conchango swoops in and rescues the show while explaining the title of his MIX08 session, Virgins, Spaceships, and Hob-nailed Boots. Paul talks about Virgin Atlantic, creating experiences that employ all of the senses, the increasing recognition of user-centered design, Experience Architectures, using stories to paint a vision, spying and guerilla ethnography, and why Paul made the trip from the U.K. to MIX06 and MIX07.
The Signal Episode 3: Listener Phone Calls, Drink Recipes and More!

It’s time for another episode of The Signal. This week, we respond to a listener call about what traditional developers can expect at MIX08, and Thomas talks to Mike about his seam carving project called SEAMonster. Then, we hear from Robert Hess (who you may recognize from The .NET Show). Robert has been doing keynote demos for over 19 years and has a lot to share about what it takes to make them happen. Along the way, he touches on topics like: why the demoer may know too much, what we can learn from Mark Twain, the hardware behind the stage, Bill Gates, the VB demo, and an 8-day workweek, what to do when 5 blocks of internet access goes down, and his alter-ego at DrinkBoy.com. Oh…and why Robert uses a dial-up modem. You don’t want to miss this.

The Signal is a weekly podcast that connects you to behind-the-scenes activity related to MIX08.
