Ultrasound Device Coming to Windows Mobile (Channel 9)

Engadget recently posted an interesting story about an ultrasound device being developed for Windows Mobile phones. According to the article, two computer science professors at Washington University have created a USB ultrasound probe for Windows Mobile smartphones. The device could be used by traveling medical staff, emergency workers, in ambulances, and anywhere else there was a need for an on-the-go, portable scanner. It would especially be useful in the developing world, where access to medical equipment is hard to come by, but mobile phones aren’t. The device should sell for around $500, which makes them much more affordable than current portable ultrasound devices which go for $30,000.

If this is found to reduce medical errors and unneeded trips to a better equipped facility..then this will be an important tool in reducing our health care costs here in the U.S. I think we should be equipping and training family practicioners with this.

Amazingly cool, I'm a med student in the UK and I would buy one of these for my medical bag should I become a GP. I can't see the quality being anything like that of the current devices but for a $25,500 saving I'll take the increased errors and improve patient care elsewhere.

Microsoft frequently amazes me with its technologies yet everybody obsessively puts them down, for medicine they should really start telling publications like the BMJ and BMA (British Medical Journal and Association respectively) so that the people who are in the wards know about this technology and ask their managers to get it in for them. If you have ever seen the episode of Scrubs in which Kelso is asked for everything the departments need in the one day imagine the thousands of "Kelsos" who aren't being asked for this tech by doctors on wards around the world!

I know Bill Crouse does a lot in America but who is the evangelist figure in the UK, anybody know?
