If you haven't checked out some of the amazing things you can do with Microsoft XNA, you should see some of the demo's people have put up on YouTube.
Here are some red blood cell (yes, as in your blood) Quad Tree Collision and one of an improved particle engine for the bullets.
Here is some smoke in XNA too.
And here is a XNA video with Penny Arcade's favorite fruit dispensing machine.
