Kinect turns your bathtub into a giant liquid touchscreen

Researchers have created a "touchscreen" for your bathtub. With only a Kinect sensor and a projector, AquaTop display facilitates interacting with virtual objects using just your hands. In order to function properly, the system requires you add some bath salts to your tub, which will turn the water opaque and prevent the camera from picking up false inputs. As a proof of concept, the team at Tokyo's University of Electro-Communications Koike Laboratory have created a number of demos that utilize some innovative gestures.

AquaTop Display is a projection system that uses white water as a screen surface. This system allows the user ’s limbs to freely move through, under and over the projection surface. Using the unique characteristics of fluid, we propose new interaction methods specific to the projection medium: water. Our system uses a depth camera to detect input on and over the water surface to allow for interactions such as protruding fingers out from under the water surface and scooping up the water with both hands. These type of interactions are not normally possible with current impenetrable rigid surfaces. For example, by floating one ’s limbs on the water surface, it is also possible to fuse one ’s body with the displayed objects for further augmented interaction by ’becoming one ’with the screen.

Center figure2 shows “Desktop Interaction”. There are three interactions. The first one is “Photo and Video viewer”. This is a multi-touch input. We have five functions for photos and videos by fingers and hands projecting from under the surface of the white water. One is to drag photos by one finger. One is to change size of photo by two fingers. One is to delete photos by three fingers. One is to watch a movie and photos by scooping the icon on the surface of white water. One is to appear fluid simulation and to pay the icon by hand. It seems the real-life gestures, which is to scoop water itself up or scoop something up on the surface of water. These three interactions are natural, physical and virtual. We apply to various possibilities in the areas such as entertainment game.
