What is your answer?
Video transcriptions have been on a few threads lately so I thought I would help out those who wanted them and make some. But there are two parts of me that are fighting each other, one says I should do the transcriptions with the ahs, ums, and the pauses/stuff ups because it is genuine. But the other part says that I should make transcriptions that make for a better reading experience without any of the ums and pauses.

So I wanted to know, which is better, having a partially hard time reading/understanding what the speaker was saying because of the ums and ahs just to have a genuine experience. Or having a better reading experience without any ums or ahs, but knowing that it isn't an exact copy of what they said?

Vote 1# Original pure experience! Vote 1# Better reading experience!

My vote goes to better reading experience, because transcripts are used a lot as an ALTERNATIVE to watching the video. They should not be subtitles IMO.

Go with the better reading experience.

Awesome, though, if you have time Smiley

WOOH! WOOH!
I did a couple of transcripts already, and found myself doing it both ways. I started out preserving the ums, until I saw that they really got in the way.

I vote for better reading experience!

Here is a bit of a breakdown as to the good vs. bad of what should be contained in a video transcription from an academic point of view i.e. what is referred to in the biz as strict verbatim transcription (umms and errs) and the making sense type of video transcription. A review of pros and cons from this London UK transcription service as to why you might want either type (of type- oh the pun)

Basically ... not putting in the ums results in a loss in how things are communicated "I really think your ... ummm... dress is great" vs. "I really think your dress is great"

Can't you just make them or nest them in elements and then make two versions. Then you can easily make a low-fi version from that.
